Joanna Burger is a professor of biology at Rutgers. She studies Pine Barrens environments, specializing in reptiles, especially pine snakes. This book introduces us to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, also to pine barrens in New York, Florida and the Carolinas, in a serious of recollections of her field work. The stories are simple, gentle and charming. I now want to see a pine snake for myself, and to visit more of these enchanting, specialize habitats that include many endemic and rare species.
