Last fall I picked this book up at the school book fair, at a discounted price, but I thought it sounded interesting. This weekend, I picked the book off the shelf and sat down for a few minutes and read the book. Just a quick read.
I loved the story. I loved how it was based on actual events that really occurred, although the dialogue and story are fiction, the camp out, the earthquake and the original people are all real. maybe it was the fact that the author was related to one of the original...more

Have you ever looked in your libraries Junior Fiction section? You should give it try, there are lots of great books there. This is one I found and it's based on a true event that happened on November 29, 1975. The author's cousin was one of those boys camping at Halape, a remote beach campground on the southern flank of Kilauea volcano. This is an a piece taken from the book that the author added at the end of the book. It comes from a newspaper.

The way Salisbury unfolded descriptive details of the terrain as the boys hiked down the lava flow, made me see it even though I have never been to Hawaii. I like to camp and hike, so the details of the way lava hardens made me FEEL the lava under my feet.
His unfolding of Louie's character made the antagonist seem like other boys in film and real life who appear surly and hateful of everyone when what they really want is to become a part of the group. Details of Louie, especially the way he wou...more

A survival story that is made all the more interesting by the fact that it actually happened. In 1975, a Boy Scout troop in Hawaii sets up camp for a few days in a remote ocean-side location. All is well until the island is rocked by a huge earthquake that is quickly followed by a tsunami.
I would actually give this one 3.5 stars, (quite possibly because I've got a minor in geosciences and am especially fascinated by earthquakes and volcanoes). However, the writing is almost a straight play-by-pl...more

Dylan and his Boy Scout troop are going on a camping trip in a remote area of Hawaii. At first Dylan struggles with the responsibilities of being a leader in the group and his conflicts with Louie, a native Hawaiian with a chip on his shoulder. Then in the middle of the night an earthquake hits, followed by a tsunami, and Dylan and Louie must work together to help save their troop.

There are many things I loved about this book - Reading about Halape in Hawaii was interesting, and the more action related parts of the book including the earthquake and subsequent events really shine while reading them and reflecting back on them, too. The first half of the book is good also, but just doesn't have the same degree of excitement, though the author does a good job of introducing the setting and sharing various features of the location. There is some interesting Hawaiian folklore...more
This is a great adventure/survival story for folks who like realistic, fast-paced fiction. Well, I don't know if I should say it's fast-paced because there is a lot of time before the "big event" (I don't want to give anything away), but I think the suspense and tension are gripping enough to keep you going until you find out what is going on.
The story is based on a real event that happened to a boy scout troop in Hawaii in the nineteen seventies. I really liked the elements of Hawaiian folklor...more

Very descriptive and realistic (it's only BASED off a true story). The ending wasn't fake at all due to the fact that nobody dies but several major injuries occur (eg Casey's knee. Yes, I am spoiling. Get over it. ED) I think it pretty accurately described how it feels to be caught in a disaster, not that I would know. Some of the things they said bugged me and I almost choked with rage when Louie said that his brother was looking out for him when he beat him up. In a twisted way, it actually ma...more
I chose to read this book because of the author. I enjoyed his book, "Under the Blood Red Sun." This book isn't as good as that one. It is based on a true story of a scout troop that went hiking on the Kilauea volcano. It is night and there is an 7.2 earth quake and a tsnami. I didn't like the 'bad boy' in the troop. The author has him speak with poor grammar and it sounds like an Indian in the movies or something. It didn't work for me. Dont' read on if you don't want spoilers.

This is the gripping tale of a troop of Boy Scouts out on a rugged hike and overnight in Hawaii. Dylan is the senior patrol leader and Louie is the tough new kid who has just joined the troop. There is history between them and tension that is put to the test when an earthquake and tsunami hit the island during the night. Fans of Peg Kehret's books( Escaping the Giant Wave and Earthquake Disaster) will love this--especially once they read the author's note and realize it is the story of Salisbury...more
Based on a true story, the harrowing adventures of a Scout troop on a 3-day hike through remote Hawaii. I might read it out loud to my boys...although I'm afraid they'd never agree to an overnight Scout trip after hearing the story!

It wasn't until I read to page 54 that I got hooked and I just couldn't put the book down. An amazing story of friendship, trust and second chances emerges between Dylan and Louie as they fight for their lives and the lives of boys in their scout troop. The boys must show super human strength and bravery in the hours that follow a massive earthquake and tsunami that destroys the part of the Hawaii where they are camping. In terms of author's craft, Salisbury's description of the earthquake is pa...more
I thought that this book was good. But the reason I gave it three starts, is for the fact that there really wasn't any action until a good half way, or more through the book. Don't get me wrong though, it was an excellent read. I would read it agian, but I have many other books on my "to-read" list. I don't really know who I'd recomend this book to, there's a little bit of everything in it. But if you have read the book "My Side of the Mountian" then I think this would be an excellent book for y...more
Night of the Howling Dogs is the story of a boy scout troup that is camping in Hawaii on Kilauea (a volcano) when an earthquake strikes and their campsite is overrun by a tsunami. It sounds like an, “oh, that would never happen” kind of story…but it is based on the true experience of a boy scout troup in 1975. One of the boy scouts that was actually there, is the cousin of the author. Like the boy scouts in Iowa, the scouts in this story use their knowledge of first aid & search & rescue...more
A wonderful story for grades 4 through adult. I recommended it to a book club and have received rave reviews from the members. It makes you really think twice about sending your children on "Scouting" adventures. You'll think even deeper about the leaders going with these young people and how much common sense they possess. I'm glad I read it after our son was out of the Scouting program. It's based on a true event in Hawaii so it really is fun to discuss. One of the teacher aides at our school...more

Interesting story set in Hawaii. For fans of survival stories, this is sure to please. A boy scout troop hikes to a remote campsite at the base of a volcano. During the night, the volcano heaves and wreaks havoc for the scattered scouts. Although there are some interesting back stories for the individual scouts, they are never fully developed so the tension between characters comes off a bit forced. tale. But all in all, a short, page turning tale based on a true story that kids might be interes...more

Based on an actual event. Very cool. Louie was a neat character. I thought it had a slow, slow first half (story told, not shown much; characters lacked depth).
Epicenter = the area of greatest damage = Dylan's mom (his dad called her this)
Favorite lines:
1. Bad thoughts can take you down a deep, dark hole if you're not careful.
2. Relief tumbled over me, a waterfall of everlasting love for the United States Coast Guard.

This is the closest to Hawaii I've ever been--traveling with a group of guys on a campout to a remote Hawaiian island with lovely crystalline waters, sands made from pumice and hardened lava, towering palm trees and breezes to cool the sweat on my brow. But wild dogs, pele, according to local legend (ghosts) howl a warning to the boys on their trek to the beach that something devastating is about happen. What is coming, and will they survive it? IIs the beach really haunted? Will Louie, Hawaiian...more

This book is based on a true story. It is about a Boy Scout Troop that travels to Hawaii for a weekend. Suddenly, the boy’s survival skills are put to the test when an earthquake hits and starts a tsunami. The boys must learn to work together, and put their differences aside in order to survive. The boys not only learn a lot about each other, but they will earn a lot about themselves.

Read for book club. This is a true story of a scout troup who went hiking and camping below a remote coastal volcano in Hawaii and got trapped in a huge earthquake and then a tsunami.
It was a little too kid-oritned for me (the writing, I mean). I got bored with the simple and juvenile dialogue. The best part of the book was of course figuring our how they would survive and get out. Then the authors notes provided lots of interesting insight. This book was really good if you like suspense books because two boys go on a camping trip in Hawaii and Caseys dad find a boy that was left by himself. They go to the ocean side and sleep the first night and everything is going well because everyone is getting along. Then Dylan spots a white dog and when he meets a man named Masa he tells him that it was a legend that is completely true and when everyone is sleeping a earthquake come and destroys most of the camping site. Many of the people in...more

Casey is the Senior Patrol leader of his Boy Scout troop, and they are about to hike and stay in a remote area in their native land of Hawaii. This place had been almost completely wiped out from a long-ago volcanic eruption, but there is a small oasis of quiet beauty in the area that remained. That's where the boys will be camping.

This is book 10 of 15 SSYRA books for 3rd to 5th graders read for next school year. This is an outstanding survival tale, based on events that took place in Hawaii in 1975. A Boy Scout troop is camping on a remote beach near a volcano when a massive earthquake strikes, following by a tsunami. This book tells of their struggle to survive and locate all the members of their troop. This book would make an excellent class read aloud, which would particularly appeal to reluctant readers.
Wow! Dylan and boy scout group #77 take off for a hike around Halape, Hawaii. Things are going as good as expected since Louie, who Dylan has some not so good history with, is now coming along. On their second night something happends that nobody could have planned for. Okay well maybe a spirit did send them a warning, but they were all still there when the massive earthquakes and tsunamis hit the coast they were camping at.
Based on a true events that took place in 1975.

This was a great book and my book club really enjoyed it. I was afraid that the girls wouldn't like it as much as the boys, but they were as equally enthralled by the story. The is so much action and adventure packed into this small book that you really don't want to put it down. However, the character don't get lost. You really feel for the characters as they are trying to survive. And the fact that it is loosely based on a true story just makes it that much more exciting.
I had this book classified as an adventure until I finished it. It is based on actual events of a 1975 earthquake and tsunami that hit Hawaii. In this story Dylan is on his way camping with his scout troop. This seems like an awesome idea until he realizes the scout master has brought along Louie, some one Dylan knows, or assumes he knows as a trouble maker. But things aren’t always what they seem to be. Louie knows Dylan recognized him from a previous run in. He also does what he can to torment...more
This young adult, historical fiction is a winner. A boy scout narrates his troop's experiences while camping along the shore at Halape (Ha-la-pay) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Having backpacked into the Halape with scouts myself, I found the author's descriptions right on the money. Having worked with boys scouts, I found character behaviors authentic as well. Story is fast paced and was worth my time. No offensive language or behaviors in the book.

Graham Salisbury comes from a 100-year line of newspapermen, all associated with Hawaii's morning paper, the Honolulu Advertiser. Although a career as a newsman could have been possible, Salisbury chose to imagine rather than report. "I enjoy writing about characters who might have been. To me, exploring fictional themes, situations, and lives is a quietly exhilarating experience. There are times...more
