A fun camping trip to a spot few know about is a lesson in survival to 11 Boy Scouts, their adult guides, and a few paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys). Together, the campers struggle to survive an earthquake and an ensuing tsunami that destroys their campsite.
I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of Salisbury, but he does weave a suspenseful fiction about an actual event. I do like that the hero in the story is a neglected boy of Hawaiian ancestry, who turns out to be caring if gruff. I also li...more

An adventure based on a real incident where a Boy Scout troop suffered the aftermath of an earthquake in Hawaii. The plodding style in the beginning will stop many readers before they get very far (We started reading this book while traveling and had to quit in order to keep the driver awake). Interestingly, I finished reading it the same week four Boy Scouts were killed in our area by a tornado that destroyed their camp. This book has a great idea that deserved better treatment.

Dylan's scout troop is camping on an ancient lava flow. He thinks his biggest challenge will be avoiding older bully Louie and keeping his sleeping bag free of fire ants, black widow spiders, and roaches. Then one night Dylan is awakened by a terrible shaking. There's been a terrible earthquake, and he must track down the other members of his scout group. Will they all survive? MS

A fictional recreation of real events set a chilling tone as a group of young boy scouts embark on a three day camping trip in a remote location on one of Hawaiian islands; the connection between fiction and history is the real earthquake and the tsunami it triggered. Salisbury also uses characters from Hawaiian mythology to great effect.

I was not enthusiastic about this. The flap didn't interest me, and the characters didn't engage me in the first ten pages. However, I was not excited about another of his books, and ended up racing for the last page. Since I found myself dreading it everytime I thought about it, I gave up 50 pages in.

I probably should give this a 4-star since it is really solid and tightly written and very exciting and quite satisfying. It probably will find its way into many young readers' paths and I will help promoting this one -- just that I wasn't as taken by it as a reader myself. Tastes definitely reign here.

This is another book I preread for ds. This book is based on a true story of a boy scout troop in Hawaii who are caught by a tsunami while camping. It would appeal to pre-teen/young teen boys who like adventure stories.

Once again Graham Salisbury shares with his readers a piece of Hawaiian folklore, with a true life adventure of survival for a troop of boy scouts. It's one of those books which I was glad to read, but glad I wasn't there.

OMG. This book is one of the creepiest books ever. What surprized me the most is that it's based on a true story and that the author's cousin acually experienced it and lived through it.

This was a pretty good book. I feel though that the slang was sometimes hard to read and follow and I think a kid might have trouble with it too. But the story was great!

This is a fictionalized tale of a boy scout troop camping in Hawaii when a 7.2 earthquake hits. It's based on a true event that happened in the 70's.

This is my favorite teen "boy book" for 2007. Based on the true story of a scout troop camping on the beach in Hawaii. A survival story at its best!

Another good "boy book" from Graham Salisbury -- lots of action, but with substance. And it's inspired by a true story!

Great for boys. If the reader is a boy scout, he may especially like this adventure/survival story.
