'How little does the earth-self know of life and its extent!'
Dreams play an important role in Lovecraft's stories. This one doesn't belong to Cthulhu mythos. It is about the importance of dreaming and an opinion on what exactly the dreams mean. The narrator labels Freud's dream analysis as silly (puerile is the word used). He allows that some dreams are not that important, but there are others that have deeper meaning, the ones that show us something that most ordinary people wouldn't underst

H.P. Lovecraft is not the best writer, but his ideas and imaginations are brilliant. Especially if you consider the time in which they were written.

I loved this story. I loved the imagery, and the idea that we are more than just mortal bodies of flesh and bone.

However, I must note that I greatly dislike Lovecraft's seeming obsession with "degenerate hill dwellers,""Esquimau diabolists,""white trash,""mongrel Louisianans," etc.

I love H.P. Lovecraft but HOLY SHIT he is extremely racist.

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft. I give this four stars because I do think some of his other work is better, but the ideas and language were nevertheless quite fun here. I had to read it twice to really have a sense of the story, and should probably read it a few more times to really appreciate all the details.

The story is too short for me to say much without giving it away. It mostly takes place in an insane asylum, and involves a doctor and a very curious patient from a rural, uneducated community

It struck me how original this idea must have been back in 1919, an age where there was burgeoning use of electricity and mechanical devices.

It cleverly juxtaposes old ideas and this new technology, opening with a line of Shakespeare, yet ending with an idea literally from another world.

Lovecraft's novel approach and parkling writing are certainly proving captivating to this new convert to his works.

Great read, but now i understand why everyone says Lovecraft was racist... Wow... The story deals with what happens when we sleep, is the body nothing but a cage for a much more powerful entity? Interesting take on the subject. Probably the best of Lovecraft's work I've read until now, of course I'm only just starting.

Welcome to the review of the HP LOVECRAFT story BEYOND THE WALL OF SLEEP.

It's about a man who gets brought into a St Luke's type of mental hospital under the insane rule and they lock him up. When asleep he dreams of things not of this Earth and wakes and relays everything he has dreamt in a maddening hyper way.

A doctor tries to help, if you want to know the rest you'll have to read the story. It's a good short story and I am glad I read it. It's not the best HP LOVECRAFT story I've read (I'm w

A young man in Italy who admires my books of Lovecraftian prose sent me a copy of this 1943 Arkham House book as a gift -- I nearly fainted when he told me this, & nearly fainted again an hour ago when the book arriv'd in ye post. There are not many of the original Arkham House Lovecraft titles that I yearn for (I am not a collector of rare items just for the sake of collecting them), because the text of Lovecraft's prose is so corrupted by Derleth's sloppy and strange editing. But this book ...more

Since I didn't care for The Call of Cthulhu I didn't expect to like this story. I did like it however, precisely because this story is centred on a shared Out of the Body experience, which is the reason I enjoyed it more than I normally would have. Lovecraft's prose frankly is plain and not much fun to read and isn't very much to my liking. You may naturally disagree of course, but we're all individuals, hence we all have our individual preferences.

The only thing that troubles me about this stor

This was magnificently creepy. Dreams and their meanings have fascinated, mystified and haunted humans for ages. This is another horror take on what it means to be dreaming - the ascension to a different plane of existence, and how one such trip overtakes and destroys the life of a hillbilly turning him into a rambling insane lunatic.

And I do not know if the reference to the villages of Catskills mountains was coincidental, or a nod to the tale of Rip Van Winkle.

I have been aware of Lovecraft fo

Beyond the Wall of Sleep is a pretty short short story - perhaps a bit too short. As the title implies, it explores the what-if regarding the dream world.

The story follows a medical officer's observations of a rustic patient at an asylum, who is prone to outbursts of strange descriptions and exhortations of what appears to be his dreams.

While it has the same style of prose as the other short stories, I can't feel any sort of creepy vibe out of this. It's a nice quick read but it lacks that induc

This story is loosely based upon real events. Lovecraft had the basic details from newspapers about a man who murdered his neighbor then raved about aliens and abductions. I'm not sure if that makes it more or less creepy. Nine pages of some of the most descriptive writing I've ever read. I am actually stumped that this has not been made into a short movie.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a
