For all things Langston, Rampersad's your man. The five decades' worth of Hughes's poetry he collects here reflects some of the major events in America's 20th century, from race riots to world wars, Communist witch hunts to Civil Rights marches and beyond. The poems, even the shopworn ones, gleam brighter with a little context, and Rampersad's notes help rinse off the anthology smell to expose a powerful (if uneven) artist in restless dialogue with his times.

Langston Hughes, a graceful poet full of wit and lonely charm. The book is a straight forward piece of art about racial conflict written in sensible verse. You will wish you knew him in the flesh after reading these poems. Brilliant.

I have to confess that I haven't technically read this book but I have read tons of his poems that are in this book and I love his intense way of expressing emotions and his vivid visual representations.

Spoken-word jazz! I have a cool cd that is a collaboration of Hughes with the great Charles Mingus, which makes perfect sense...when I read his stuff I can't help but hear jazz being played behind it.

"Bring me all your dreams, you dreamers"...Hughes is one of the most important writers, poets of all time. He effortlessly, tells of the hardships, passions, and lives of average Black people.

Langston Hughes is absolutely the best poet of all time. Challenge me on this one. I especially love "Silhouette" and "Song for a Dark Girl." Look them up, it'll give you chills.

Few poems have hit me in the gut like his poems... To even try to describe them is impossible. Suffice it to say they will SPEAK to you.

Being white, I can never feel what African-Americans feel. But reading this poetry I can sense it. So many of his poems are WOW poems.

Langston Hughes has always been one of my favorite poets. His words are sometimes filled with love, and often with despair.

My favorite poet, especially the blues-style poems. Musical. His poems are more musical than most songs today.

Langston is jazz and his words are the feelings we get when we witness a great play in that medium.
