I've wanted to read this for a while, being interested both in the history of food and of Vietnam. I was... oddly disappointed when I did get to it. It's a very thorough analysis, drawing from French, Vietnamese and American sources, but it's also somewhat odd, for want of a better word, in its treatment of colonialism. The author mentions the prejudices of Emperor Minh Mạng against the Christians, and quotes several justifications for them--and somehow only gets to what I'd consider the main ...more
