First, a little background on the story…
Justin is not you average HS boy playing football, instead the words nerd, and man-boobs come to mind... but then trouble begins with his family, and then his friends... next thing you know, he's no-man's-land at school except for the Goth crowd. He decides enough is enough, and starts to make changes.

But just as he's started, he meets this smoking hot chick at the gym. She's all 'come hither, Justin' attitude until she attacks him. She's not human. After experiencing a killer migraine, suddenly he starts developing strange powers. It's like he has this ‘panty dropping power’ on any female he comes across, something every hormonal boy should want but not Justin. He's a hopeless romantic.

He has to figure out what is happening to him, even though it seems everyone else knows the rules of the game while he’s still looking for his scorecard. Can he figure out the world he’s found himself thrust into before others track him down and do worse than make him their plaything?

I. Loved. This. Book.
This is a fast, fun read that left me aching for the sequel. Sweet Blood of Mine is fantastic for adults and young adults alike! Justin transforms before the reader's eyes; starting as a shy nerd needing a "Man-zier" to seducing every female (including the readers) into jelly at his feet. SBoM manages to remain innocent and romantic, but enough ‘action’ to steam your glasses.

It's laugh out loud funny and I highly recommend it to ANYONE who enjoys paranormal romance/urban fantasy

You simply MUST read this book. You may say, “But I don’t read YA.” SBoM is the YA that everyone should read, even those that don’t usually read YA. Take a chance, and I promise you will not be disappointed! SBoM rolls awkward teenage drama with supernatural shenanigans, adds a few ninja moves, and Princess Bride references (you know you love it). John Corwin adds such wit to this story; it keeps you laughing from the first sentence. Corwin’s writing style reminds me of the Dresden Files and Iron Druid Chronicles because of his laugh-out-loud humor that seems to captivate the reader. You’ll be drawn in by the humor and then the story will create a craving that can’t be satisfied until you’ve finished the last page.

Overall, Sweet Blood of Mine is a hilarious, enthralling urban fantasy that will knock your knickers off and leave you quivering for more!(less)

So I'd been hearing so much good things about this from all my goodread's friends so I couldn't wait for it to come out.
I think one of the best things about this was having it from a male POV & written by a guy. I've read a couple of books by other authors that are from a guy's POV but still written by women, this gives us a rare glimpse into the workings of a teenage boy's head & it was really great fun.

Justin Case is your typical nerd. After rescuing Katie, his long-time crush, from a bully, things are beginning to look up for Justin. But, after an unfortunate string of events, Justin "loses" Katie, what little social standing he had, and even his two best friends.

This is a book where no one is who they seem to be at first. Justin never quite knows throughout the story who his friends are, and he has to make the tough decision of who he can trust.

I absolutely adored my time with this book! The author managed to have me laughing just about every other page (causing many an odd look from household members I might add) and injected enough action, romance, and tension into this unique paranormal story to keep me seriously immersed as well!

This book definitely wasn't like what I expected. I heard already some good things about this book, but it was better than expected. The story is about Justin Case (at the first mention of his name I already started laughing) a nerdy boy who's social live kinda sucks. He is on love with a girl who doens't love him and well he really is a nerd.

The first half of the story is mainly about getting to know Justin and how nerdy he is. I really had fun about all the nerdy jokes in the book. It was great. Normally the lead characters always are kinda cool already, but well Justin isn't. Until later on in the book you get the feeling that something more supernatural is going on. It still takes some time before we really know what is going on, only the last third of the book deals with the supenratural aspect. But i still enjoyed the whole story.

What I really liked about this book is that Justin case is just a normal person, well normal is maybe giving him too much credit, because he really is a nerd. He is like the last person to be a supernatural creature of some sort, but slowly in the book you see Justin chaging. This doens't go with jumps, but with tiny steps. I always like seeing character growth like this in a book. Also his relations with other characters grow or diminish.

The story itself is also very enjoyable. It was many twists and turns and while at some points it is very predictable it also conatins so many unpredictable elements. Overall it this is just a very funny and even a bit of a light read. I really enjoyed all the nerdy references and jokes in the first half in the book and seeing Justin develop and growing into a much stronger character than I expected he could be.

Except for the great main character and good story, this books also contains some action, romance and some slightly sexy scenes. It contains many different elements and still manages to come over as a light read. Another thing that i have to say about this book and maybe even about this authors writing style is that it is very original. this book is unlike any other book, while it certainy contains some common elements it is also very surprising and original most of the times. The only other book i've read from this author also had this same kind of originality, some known elements and a whole lot of unexpected and original ones.

To conclude: a very nice, original and enjoyable read. This book is a funny and light read, but still manage to have a great story and character development. I would certainly recommend reading it. And i am definitely looking forward to reading more about Justin and this supernatural world.(less)

What we have all been been waiting for is finally here! Sweet Blood of Mine is out! I read this one months ago in beta stage and just finished reading the finished novel and it was just as great the second go around as well.

I was fortunate enough to beta read this book and ABSOLUTELY loved it. Dear John Corwin,

You surprised me! I never thought I would ever read a YA novel from a guy's perspective.

Ever!

But I did, and you wrote it, and it was superb!

Justin is believable from beginning to end. I felt sorry for him, I cheered him on, I wished he punched Nathan's face in for most of the book. I felt emotional for him during his heartbreaks and disappointments. And I wanted him to get his girl.

Rarely does a YA book carry this much weight! Seriously, if it were paperback it could best "Breaking Dawn" any day! Be prepared for a true coming of age tale which potentially involves some fairies, may or may not include vamps, and may answer the question of high school once and for all. Interlaced with magic, mogies and mystery, there's enough comedy to keep you laughing, enough true love to keep you hoping and enough Prince's Bride references to make this one legitimately awesome book.

So first of all, this book is downright hilarious. The wittiness, the comments…it was just great to read something that was truly sarcastic and actually funny. That meant I took a lot of “screen shots” of some funny sections on my iPad while I read…I had to pick a couple favorites to put up here!

I stood in the doorway for a stunned moment, unsure if my skills as Kings and Castles woodland elf had prepared me to take on a challenge like this. Nathan could pass for an ogre. His neck had more girth than one of my legs, which was probably why he was an all-star football player. It meant suicide to attack that monster.

And…

A warm hand touched my neck. I shrieked like a little girl in a helium factory. Stacey stood behind me. Just great. Now they’d have a video of me screaming too.

Secondly, I felt the book was a little disjointed…written in two sections. The first half is this nerd being super bullied and not just by the football jocks…it was administrators, teachers, coaches…they ALL seemed to have it in for Justin. The second half I felt was the section where he finds out who he is, who his girlfriend is, who his dad is, who his mom is, etc. etc. etc. It’s as though, just about everyone he knew really wasn’t human. It was a little disorienting to place a character and then have to change it all up halfway through the book.

Thirdly, I don’t mind a little sexual tension or angst with my characters, but downright sexual conduct I guess is a bit much for me. A teenager visiting a strip club or being able to “connect” to females and have them want to rip his clothes off…was a bit much to read. Props though for the fact that Justin totally wanted to save his “v” card for a special moment and never actually progressed to anything past making out or groping.

If this were a movie, it’d probably a really strong PG-13 or even an R do to the sexual content and couple nudity scenes. A LOT of people loved this book and if it weren’t for the strong sexual content…I totally would too. Like I said earlier…the comments, wittiness…it was hilarious to read. If you read it, PLEASE let me know what you think. After reading a log of other reviews, I feel like the wet blanket…haha!

I'd probably rate this at 3.5 stars, not quite 4. I loved the idea of a chubby, nerdy main character-- and loved him even more after reading that he needs a "manzier" (which, BTW, has to be one of the best non-words ever). It was a bit slow at times, and by "at times" I really mean the first 60% of the book. At first, I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book. The narrator's self-deprecation and judgmental attitude smarted a little - I felt as though the cracks about his involvement in Kings and Castles (basically a LARP), his weight, and his geeky prospects sounded a little too much like derision from someone outside the culture rather than within. He seemed like a caricature, and I was put off by it.
However, this initial assessment proved incorrect. And I did enjoy the adolescent male perspect...more At first, I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book. The narrator's self-deprecation and judgmental attitude smarted a little - I felt as though the cracks about his involvement in Kings and Castles (basically a LARP), his weight, and his geeky prospects sounded a little too much like derision from someone outside the culture rather than within. He seemed like a caricature, and I was put off by it.
However, this initial assessment proved incorrect. And I did enjoy the adolescent male perspective from a male author. Justin was likable, but not perfect or elevated. He didn't have to be the broody, suave debonair male hero that most female narrations provide. He was completely fallible, but you found yourself rooting for him.
I was a little concerned by his transformation. The ease with which he abandoned his old geekster friends and the effortless achievement of physical prowess muddied any "moral" that may have been forming. Still, Justin was likable for his mostly altruistic urges to help others, even if he often regretted them afterwards. In fact, if one could get past his inner monologue of judgement and hormones, he was a pretty likable guy. Once he found his love interest he was a lot better. I preferred to think the depth of his caring brought out the likable character in a way that his own repeated meditations on being a "hopeless romantic" could not. It's just not that convincing when you inner monologue about your likable quirks.
I liked the efforts to make the supporting cast into dynamic people. I thought the South and football bashing was a bit heavy, and that perhaps the "corruption" plot involved there was maybe a bit overdone, but the party and popularity scene was well done. Oftentimes, when a book deals with a character who gains popularity rapidly the "reality check" of the inner circle's problems is a bit heavy handed. No attempts at complete 180's were made. It allowed for verisimilitude and a little bit of "lesson" - I really thought the characters were dynamic - you could like and dislike everyone, including the main character, without being too bogged down in realism to just enjoy the story.

The strongest aspect of the book was the pacing. A reader was rarely bored. The book flowed well, and although some plot points took a long time to be revealed, they weren't all rushed either. Also, the main character actually tries to puzzle things out, which is nice. I didn't find myself checking every few minutes to see how much of the book was left - the plot carried forward and was anything but boring. The balance between "action" and development was good as well.(less)

When I was younger I had a few "friends" that always played WoW and made it their life (literally). I still remember the South Park episode for WoW where they all sit at their computers and never leave, because they're obsessed with the game. So, when I read the synopsis of this book, I thought surely it would be similar to those "friends" I had and would remind me of that one South Park episode. I was pleasently surprised, though, when it was NOTHING like either of those expectations!

I have to also admit when reading the synopsis and finding out what MC's name was, I kind of laughed to myself because it reminded me of an old car insurance commercial :). The name fits him perfectly, though. Justin is a very witty, nerdy, out of shape, overweight, good guy (view spoiler). I started the book laughing the whole time! Though I was never into the whole game playing, acting out, whatever they did in this book, kind of stuff...I still felt like I could connect with Justin. We all feel out of place at one point in time, and I'm sure we all have that crush on that one person we know we can never have. Justin is that perfect nerd in the wrong world. Even the mystery of who (or what) Justin is starts from the very beginning. How much better can a book get than to keep your attention from page one? Not only because of the mystery of the paranormal unknown, but because it's just so funny! You also feel so bad for Justin. His family issues are obviously not normal and it just adds more mystery to the whole book. Even when I finished the book, I'm still left wondering so much (thank goodness for book 2!).

I really enjoyed the authors (John Corwin Sweet Blood of Mine) ability to make the book a different kind of paranormal, but also be able to make the book seem like it could actually happen. The high school drama, the jerks Justin had to put up, even loosing his true friends, made the book feel more real.

I LOVE the cover of the book for the sultry blue eyes :), but it has thrown me off a bit. We know Justin starts working out and he becomes more defined, but I would have loved a point in time when someone just stopped and described Justin as irresistable as the cover! Besides that petty complaint, I can't find anything I didn't really love about the book. I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype behind it! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal/YA reads, as it is one of the best I have read recently.

To put it simply in three words “I loved it!”

Yes, I know it quiet the red-carpet affair for one (especially me) to claim to love a book but I did. Why you ask? Straightforward, it was the comic relief. Nowadays the bookstores, e-store and libraries are bogged down with supernatural stories from a hot female point of view. Let’s face fact, sometimes we need a story where the underdog guy gets the lady (A cup man bobs and all) and t keep things fresh we need to see how the guy sees things. In addition, young men need some way to relate to the young ladies reading Twilight, Vampire Academy and other related paranormal books.

I know romance from a guy’s p-o-v, who would have thought? Hey, it worked for HB’s Vladimir Todd Series as well as FM’s Bloodthirsty, NW Dark Matter Heart and it works forJohn Corwin’s Sweet Blood of Mine as well.
Additionally, it’s a clever new twist to the whole paranormal pop culture that every young guy can relate to… I’m speaking of the overweight guy with a crush and a dream plus every girl who loves paranormal stories should read.

Overall, Sweet Blood of Mine was a great debut that will hook all readers and the male p-o-v definitely stood out. It contains its own unique set of characters, and a plot. Some might argue that it lends ideas from other popular books. As an avid reader, I can accept that but to me all books reflect each other in some fashion. Sweet Blood of Mine is a classic tale of coming of age with a supernatural demon that even the guys will secretly love. A classic 5 Star instant hit.

3.5 stars. This is the story of Justin Case. Human, Incubus & Sorcerer. He is also a late bloomer. Near his 18th birthday his nerdy world falls apart and he transforms from mega nerd with a weight problem to supernatural being. The premise of the story was good and the first half had my attention but then it changed and it became a bit boring for me.

I really enjoyed this book. Written from the POV of a nerdy unfit teenage boy (Justin), into role playing games. One day he comes across his long time crush trying to fight off the unwelcome advances of the school bully and hits out at him. This book was really different to all the the other YA books I've read because the main character wasn't super hot, super rich or super cool, in fact, he was pretty much the opposite of all of these things. Justin is an overweight nerd who leads a pretty sucky life. After an argument with his friends, rather friend, and his family, he's pretty much on his own, but for some reason the Goth crowd at school choose to accept him. Then after a strange encounter with a very hot woman at the gym, Justin starts to develop strange powers whereby he can make any female attracted to him. This isn't any sort of attraction though, this is let's-have-sex-right-this-very-second attraction. Suffice to say - Justice is confused.

As I said before, this book is written from Justin's perspective and it's pretty funny at times. Justin is a real loser, not a typical young adult loser who just hasn't mixed with the right people. Justin is pretty clueless about what's happening to him which makes this whole book a bit of a mystery as you know just as much as Justin does. Towards the end of the book you'll be turning pages like crazy as it seems everyone from the crazy hot lady at the gym to his new Goth girlfriend, Elyssa, to his dad knows the truth, apart from Justin.

I loved the character of Justin but I can't say that he didn't seriously bug me at times (come on, we were in the mind of a teenage boy). As a teenage girl, I can honestly say it was quite the learning experience to read something written from a teenage boy's perspective. Obviously, I know this is fiction, but I can't help but feel that John Corwin nailed Justin's character on the head and I felt like I was really in the brain of a teenage boy. I also really loved the charatcter Elyssa, the girl in the Goth crew, because she was so fiesty and wasn't afraid to say what she felt. She really annoyed me at the end of the book when she proved that fiestiness turned into stubborness but on the whole I thought she was great. Again, it's really interesting to read a young adult romance from the perspective of the boy because we were reading about what boys really think about strong girls like Elyssa.

I loved that this book featured a whole new type of paranormal creature that I've never come across before, which is rare these days. I also loved that this was a mixture of a mystery, romance, action and a paranormal book. It wasn't just about romance either, there's also some stuff about his dysfunctional family, his mum leaves at the beginning of the book and his dad turns to alcohol, as well as friendships. The story really gets going towards the end of the book and there's quite a lot of action that paves the way for a sequel. Once Justin finds out exactly what he is and what he is capable of the plot starts to move a bit faster and the stakes are raised. There was so much juicy material jam packed into this novel but it didn't feel like you were being overloaded because it was all so cleverly crafted.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this book to everyone whether you're a boy, a girl or even an adult. This is a really different sort of YA book that I guarantee will have you flipping through those pages like crazy. A huge mix of genres wonderfully collide in this novel and it's probably one of the best books I read in 2012.

Just finished Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin and I have to say I really enjoyed it! Mostly the humor came from the insight into Justin's mind, which made him so real to me and you know what a sucker I am for real characters! It was a bit crude sometimes (ie: talks about "little Justin" lol) , and for that reason this would not be a book I would recommend to the tweens, but I felt these comments and feelings were accurate and totally true to an 18 year old mind. It added immensely to my enjoyment of the book. It was also really refreshing to see a book from a male point of view, so often in YA these stories are told from the POV of a female.

Last but certainly not least, this book also manages to touch on topics like fitting in, being and finding yourself, teen drinking, teen sex, bullying and more. Given the storyline, sex and the desire for it do come up often, (the kid does get sexual superpowers!) so keep that in mind for any teens. Even with this, John managed to impart many lessons and I found many tidbits that spoke to me as an adult.

Overall, I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars on my YA scale. It was entertaining and interesting, but sometimes I do think the attitudes and actions of the main character were a little too "adult" for a YA book. It suited the story though, and I would recommend it to an older teen crowd. I will definitely be getting the next book in this series, Dark Light of Mine!(less)

Brain splitting headaches which seem to cause flashes of super human strength and senses, plague Justin. His seemingly perfect family starts to crumble. The few friends he had turn their backs on him. The girl he has crushed on for so long begins to turn the school against him. I really felt for the guy, how much more could go wrong!? - Then a little bit goes right. And Justins, as well as the readers, hopes blossoms. In a twist of events he becomes The Man on campus, and unfortunately this attracts unwanted attention...

The first 50% of this book was not action packed, but that stays true to the story and the characters. It never felt slow or drawn out though. That was our time to learn. Things pick up after that and there was plenty of action to keep me glued to my kindle. As you read I think you will understand this transformation better. It was a fun, humorous and engaging read! Also, this is a paranormal being I have never read about. I wont tell you what, because I am mean like that, and because that was part of the fun of the book! Just know this-- It is pretty darn cool.

John Corwin has found a career long fan in me, all with one book. I have not laughed and smiled so much while reading in quite some time. Witty characters are sure entertainment. Witty geeks, and you just add another level of swoon, for me! I am probably not normal in that respect.
