From Mega Nerd to Super Stud.

Justin Case and women do not mix. Man boobs, a love of Kings and Castles, and being tight with the "nerd" crowd certainly don't win him any points either. After rescuing Katie, his crush, it turns out she might not be the girl he thought she was, while Elyssa, the school's Goth Girl, turns out to be more. Can high school get any more confusing?...more

Alana ~ The Book Pimp
For this review, I need my special pimp hat.
*Alana pulls out a purple Fedora with a long striped feather*

First, a little background on the story…
Justin is not you average HS boy playing football, instead the words nerd, and man-boobs come to mind... but then trouble begins with his family, and then his friends... next thing you know, he's no-man's-land at school except for the Goth crowd. He decides enough is enough, and starts to make changes.

But just as he's started, he meets this smoking hot...more

So I'd been hearing so much good things about this from all my goodread's friends so I couldn't wait for it to come out.
I think one of the best things about this was having it from a male POV & written by a guy. I've read a couple of books by other authors that are from a guy's POV but still written by women, this gives us a rare glimpse into the workings of a teenage boy's head & it was really great fun.
It did take me a little while to get into this but once I did I flew through it, it...more

Justin Case is your typical nerd. After rescuing Katie, his long-time crush, from a bully, things are beginning to look up for Justin. But, after an unfortunate string of events, Justin "loses" Katie, what little social standing he had, and even his two best friends.

This is a book where no one is who they seem to be at first. Justin never quite knows throughout the story who his friends are, and he has to make the tough decision of who he can trust.

I love Justin. In the beginning of the book h...more

I absolutely adored my time with this book! The author managed to have me laughing just about every other page (causing many an odd look from household members I might add) and injected enough action, romance, and tension into this unique paranormal story to keep me seriously immersed as well!

My inner nerd (who happens to wear this shirt regularly)

...spent the entire time grinning like a lunatic and she flat out fainted at the end! *sigh*

I got a copy for review in exchange for an honest review.

This book definitely wasn't like what I expected. I heard already some good things about this book, but it was better than expected. The story is about Justin Case (at the first mention of his name I already started laughing) a nerdy boy who's social live kinda sucks. He is on love with a girl who doens't love him and well he really is a nerd.

The first half of the story is mainly about getting to know Justin and how nerdy he is. I really...more

This was a 6-star read for me!

I was fortunate enough to beta read this book and ABSOLUTELY loved it. Not being a real fan of YA, I was concerned that I would dislike the story because I wouldn't be able to connect with the characters. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I not only connected with the characters but the story captured my immediate attention. I couldn't put this book down. Corwin is witty and humorous and he crafted a delightfully engaging read...and who wouldn't love a book full of P...more

5 fucking solid stars. If I could go any higher on the scale, I would have given it a 6. Hell, I'll go and do that. 6 stars. It's that good. I recommend to it lovers of Young Adult fiction and paranormal romance lovers. To the supporters of the underdog and nerdy hero who just can't cut a break in life, this is for you. This is truly awesomeness in word-form. I can't believe the author is self-published. It's amazing how good Sweet Blood of Mine is. It's funny, witty and downright touches your h...more

Dear John Corwin,

You surprised me! I never thought I would ever read a YA novel from a guy's perspective.

Ever!

But I did, and you wrote it, and it was superb!

Justin is believable from beginning to end. I felt sorry for him, I cheered him on, I wished he punched Nathan's face in for most of the book. I felt emotional for him during his heartbreaks and disappointments. And I wanted him to get his girl.

He was the perfect specimen to describe the 'underdog' who comes out on top. The chunky, not ve...more

Rarely does a YA book carry this much weight! Seriously, if it were paperback it could best "Breaking Dawn" any day! Be prepared for a true coming of age tale which potentially involves some fairies, may or may not include vamps, and may answer the question of high school once and for all. Interlaced with magic, mogies and mystery, there's enough comedy to keep you laughing, enough true love to keep you hoping and enough Prince's Bride references to make this one legitimately awesome book.

This book was filled with a ton of AWESOME witty comebacks and sayings. I found myself laughing out loud through many sections. I was a bit on the fence on this book because of a couple different things, but it certainly was a funny read and most definitely different. There were so many different types of “creatures”…it was kind of awesome.

Disclaimers and such: I received this book from the group on Goodreads called: “Shut Up & Read” in their Read It & Reap section. So although, I receiv...more

* I was given a free copy of this book for review purposes. The review is based solely on my opinion and was not influenced by author or publisher.

Justin is a nerd, a big one. He is the typical punching bag for the popular jocks. He has his nerdy friends, his role-playing game Kings and Castles, a crush on an unattainable girl, a flabby spare tire, man boobs and excruciating migraines. Sounds like quite the catch doesn't he? Stacey thinks so and that's before he gains his super strength, speed...more

I'd probably rate this at 3.5 stars, not quite 4. I loved the idea of a chubby, nerdy main character-- and loved him even more after reading that he needs a "manzier" (which, BTW, has to be one of the best non-words ever). It was a bit slow at times, and by "at times" I really mean the first 60% of the book. I prefer to be roped into a book right away -- I love that feeling of not wanting to put a book down, even if it means I only get 2 hours of sleep that night. Unfortunately, This book didn't...more

At first, I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book. The narrator's self-deprecation and judgmental attitude smarted a little - I felt as though the cracks about his involvement in Kings and Castles (basically a LARP), his weight, and his geeky prospects sounded a little too much like derision from someone outside the culture rather than within. He seemed like a caricature, and I was put off by it.
However, this initial assessment proved incorrect. And I did enjoy the adolescent male perspect...more

What a pleasant surprise. I'll be honest here, I almost gave up on this book. About a third of the way through the book, I just didn't feel like reading any more. I thought it was a little slow and had a lot of unnecessary things going on.

When I was younger I had a few "friends" that always played WoW and made it their life (literally). I still remember the South Park episode for WoW where they all sit at their computers and never leave, because they're obsessed with the game. So, when I read the synopsis of this book, I thought surely it would be similar to those "friends" I had and would remind me of that one South Park episode. I was pleasently surprised, though, when it was NOTHING like either of those expectations!

3.5 stars. This is the story of Justin Case. Human, Incubus & Sorcerer. He is also a late bloomer. Near his 18th birthday his nerdy world falls apart and he transforms from mega nerd with a weight problem to supernatural being. The premise of the story was good and the first half had my attention but then it changed and it became a bit boring for me.

I was beyond pissed and annoyed that his parents would just abandon him. Also it seemed unrealistic that a boy would have so many strange thing...more

I had a hard time in the beginning of the book, but once the story kicked in and things started to fall into place, I couldn't put it down.
I already purchased the second book and will more than likely start it tonight :)

I really enjoyed this book. Written from the POV of a nerdy unfit teenage boy (Justin), into role playing games. One day he comes across his long time crush trying to fight off the unwelcome advances of the school bully and hits out at him. This results in Justin being picked on by the soccer team and the school authorities in general. He drowns his sorrows with his Dad's beer and wakes up to find he's lost all his friends due to drunken Facebook and Twitter rants. The only people at his school...more

It's interesting reading a YA paranormal romance written by a man, its not something you come across often and, in fact, I think this is possibly the first YA romance book I've ever read that's written by a man. It was also quite interesting because the main character was a guy and it was written from his perspective, though I suspect that this sort of book would actually appeal primarily to teenage girls. Perhaps this was an attempt to draw boys into the paranormal romance genre and it might, j...more

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable teen paranormal from a guy's perspective, this is probably the book for you. Justin is an overweight, nerdy high school student, who is obsessed with Kings and Castles, has only 2 friends, is in love with a girl-next-door-type who doesn't know he exists, and is bulled by football team. After saving said girl-next-door-type from being manhandled by one of those bullies, Justin begins to develop unexplained supernatural abilities, including, speed, streng...more

Just finished Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin and I have to say I really enjoyed it! It had all the basics - well written (although I had a bit of trouble getting into it at the beginning, but maybe that was because I was coming off an adult read?), interesting story, and I loved the nerdy kid turns...well, still nerdy but confident, angle.

The humour in this book really grabbed me. I found myself smiling or laughing consistently at something that was said or done. The sarcastic wit was right...more

Oh my! In a sea of sex-clenching hot male heroes, Justin was a breath of fresh air. Throw in the fact that he is a chubby nerd, who plays a game much like D&D, and builds foam weapons... I think I am IN LOVE! I have thing for nerds. Lol. A nod to Star Trek sealed the deal for me.

Justin Case, pretty much your average (*real life) high school student. He worries about grades, getting beat up and his virginity. That is what I loved so much about him, a far cry from so many unobtainable, brave,...more

John Corwin has been making up stuff all his life. As a child he would tell his sisters he was an alien clone of himself and would eat tree bark to prove it. For John, making stuff up was about one thing: teasing his sisters.

In middle school, everything changed. A class assignment to string random words together into a coherent story led to the birth of Fargo McGronsky, a young boy with anger mana...more

“Wait, so you do love me?" I asked, hope welling in my heart.
She growled and pounded her fist into a locker, leaving a fist-shaped dent. "Stop it, Justin. Stop it!"
I grabbed her shoulders. "Look at me and tell me you don't love me," I said. "Do it and I'll never bother you again."
"I don't love you," she mumbled.
"Look at me when you say it!"
She turned to me, her eyes hard but dull and faded. "I don't love you."
I let her go. My heart turned to lead, the heavy lump sagging in my chest. "Well, if there are agents out there looking to kill me, I guess it would be a mercy."
I turned to leave. Her hand gripped my shoulder.
"Please listen to me, Justin."
I pushed her hand away but didn't turn to face her. I couldn't let her see the tears welling in my eyes. "Why? What does it matter?"
"It just does. I—I don't want to see you hurt."
I took a deep shuddering breath. "You're not doing a very good job of it." I walked away and left her standing there.”
