The thing is, I read Pyxis almost a year ago. The magic of the first time just wasn't there anymore when I tried to re-read it, and although I thought I was still eager for the sequel, I really did not have that feeling of anxious anticipation for Book 2 as I did right after I first read Pyxis.

What an amazing sequel Alight turned out to be!! Going into Alight I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations after having loved book one Pyxis so much, but now I can easily say Alight was AMAZING! I would even go as far as to saying I loved Alight more than Pyxis!

K.C. Neal has easily become one of my favorite authors, her writing in Pyxis was incredible, and I feel it only got better in Alight. All the sceneries of the fog, the cove, the bottles, the nets, the field everything was so magical and vivid in my mind while reading. Her writing has become one of my favorites to get lost into.

While Pyxis book one was a great read, I have to admit Alight really kicked everything WAY up! The mystery, the romance, the struggles, the friendships, everything in Alight felt like it had the amazing aspects I loved in Pyxis…but 10 times better!

Corinne has even more struggles in book two and even though she is scarred, she takes responsibility and knows she must take on the role as the Pyxis. I already had a lot of respect for Corinne in book one, but book two really brought out even more of who she is as a character. Now that I think about it, the Pyxis series has been amazing with character development for all of the main characters. Ang, Mason and Sophie, each of them I could see a big difference from how they were in book two from book one, and I cannot wait to see them grow even more in book three!

Although I loved practically everything in Alight, my only ‘complaint’ would be at times things got predictable, there were several things that I believe were supposed to be surprises, but I had seen them coming. Now this didn't bother me too much cause it only happened on a few times, and while I had guessed some of the surprises, there were other surprises that completely threw me off guard and I DID NOT see coming!

My favorite part of Alight was easily the new addition of Zane. Some Australian mysterious yet caring guy? Ya how could he NOT be my favorite part! He is going to be a future fictional crush, I can tell already! I cannot wait to see more of him (hopefully a lot more!) in book three and get to know his character more, as of right now I have my fingers crossed for Corinne to end up with him at the end of this all!

Altogether if you are looking for a unique and amazing new series to start pick up Pyxis, it will not disappoint. Book two has been an amazing additional to a series that is easily becoming a favorite of mine, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book three the final book in the Pyxis series.

Last year when I finished reading Pyxis , I couldn't wait to get my hands on Alight. The ending had me on the edge of my seat and I was eager to get back into the world of Corinne, Mason and Angeline. I expected Alight to be full of thrill, action, humor and a heart pounding romance as Pyxis had in it. Alight picks up right where Pyxis left off. Corrine now knows who the second guardian is and the emotional roller coaster that ensues is marvelous! While her bond has grown deeper with Mason, the appearance of the mysterious Zane throws quite a kink into the story. As Corrine struggles to unify her pyramidal union she discovers her enemy is growing stronger and wants to take everything from her. It's been over a year since I read the first Pyxis book, The Discovery, which was easily one of my favourite reads of 2011. The cliffhanger had me waiting with bated breath for Alight – what was going to happen to Corinne, Mason, and Angeline now? And who would this other guardian be? My expectations were high.

I've read Pyxis in a lightning speed and enjoyed it beyong means. It was a beatifully crafted book and I am grateful that I get to read it. Now, we have Alight. Second book of the series by Neal and this one didn't disappoint either.

Though Mason and Corrine grew close in Pyxis, they are still trying to figure out how they belong to each other outside of magic. There was even more mystery in this one: between the other pyramidal union, the sick students and Harriet, the big bad from Book 1, who was back with a vengeance. I liked the mystery element more in this book than the previous one. It seemed more important somehow. There was more magic in this one, as well as a lot more action. Between the dream world, Harriet and the upcoming Summer Solstice, the pyramidal union was always running around, doing something or another.

Corrine was a strong female MC, which I loved. She had a ton of responsibility on her shoulders, but she didn’t complain. She knew what she had to do and was willing to do it. Sure, she was sometimes sad or worried about her role, but she never tried to get out of it, or shirk those duties. Mason was back and just as cute as ever. He and Corrine were clearly perfect for each other, but couldn’t see it. Zane was nice, but he struck me as a sort of red herring. He seemed too perfect. Was he a bad guy or a good one? It was really iffy there for a while, and I’m still not sure I’m convinced which one he is yet. Ang, Corrine’s bestie, was another strong female. She also was struggling with her responsibilities, and with who her co-guardian was. But, like Corrine, she knew what had to be done.

The cover is okay, but it’s not a favorite. I don’t like the model’s face, she almost seems to be cocky. She appears much more self-assured than Corrine actually is.

The sum up:
Lots of times you hear talk of a middle book in a trilogy being just a placeholder between the first and second books, but this is not one of those. It was solid and moved the plot along well. I enjoyed it just as much as the first and can’t wait to read the final book.(less)

The overall story wasn’t what I had expected, but it was a lot more thrilling than the first book.

In Alight, Corinne has to fight evil forces when a string of mysterious illness strikes Tapestry. But before that, she has to figure out who her second Guardian is to complete the Tapestry Pyramidal Union. And along the way, she discovers that they aren’t the only Union ever exists. Whereas Pyxis is simply an intro to everything Corinne is destined to, Alight takes us deeper into the whole Pyramidal Union thing and gives us insight into the role of each person in the Union. Readers are also introduced to some new characters; one of them is Zane the Aussie dude, which I reckoned have significant impact on Corinne’s destiny.

However, I was very disappointed that I still couldn't connect to the characters especially with Corinne, the main character and protagonist of the series. In Alight, I thought she is a vulnerable girl who longs to be loved and still can’t decide where her heart truly belongs. She was rather a confusing character in this second installment because even though there are romance scenes between her and Mason, I wasn't convinced that she’s into Mason despite her jealousy in the first book. Zane injected some kind of drama into her life and he seems to be too good to be true. Apart from that, in this book, Corinne is forced to sort out the issues she has with her former best-friend, Sophie. I thought that was the only realistic thing happening to Corinne in a personal perspective.

Basically I had nothing else to say about Alight except that it was more suspenseful and intriguing with all the evil-fighting and disease. I have to admit though that I had hard times catching up with K. C. Neal’s fantasy that she put together in this book. It was a lot more complex that at some point it become too comical and I had to reread some parts just to make sure that I really understand the plot. Just like Pyxis, Alight ended in a cliffhanger but all in all, it was a worthy read.

My only complaint is the formatting issues I encountered with the PDF review copy I received, which I thought needed to be looked over.(less)

Alight picks up where Pyxis left off and does not disappoint! Corrine is charged with honing her skills, navigating her feelings for Mason and finishing up her Sophomore year all while waiting for the other Guardian to reveal him or herself. (No pressure or anything.) She doesn't have to wait long for other Guardian to be revealed and what a reveal THAT is! I didn't see that one coming but it was brilliant!

The green eyed creeper continues to cause problems, threatening the bond Corrine, Ang, Mason and the new Guardian have, but that may be the least of Corrine's concerns, especially when Zane shows up. He's the new guy in town, or dream world rather and he seems full of all kinds of helpful information. *glares* What's NOT helpful is how Corrine allows herself to be distracted by Zane. Zane, with his cool hair, fancy piercings and smexy accent. *stomps foot* (Really, not helpful to those of us who are fully rooted on Team Mason. \m/) I wanted to shake her and say, "Hellew, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! We're not Team Zane, we're Team Mason! hazel, is our team color NOT blue, focus Corrine, FOCUS!" I also wanted to tell her that honestly, I don't trust this Zane guy as far as I can throw him. I think there's more to his story and his icy blue eyes than she realizes and she will rue the day she met him. RUE.THE.DAY! *takes a deep breath* Actually, Zane could be a really nice guy and exactly what Corrine needs but it might end costing her more than she ever imagined.

Sophie is still hanging around, more than Corrine would like but hey, it's like they say, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." right? Ang is still the best BFF a girl could have and I'm so glad she has a love interest. Mason is still made of awesome but my heart hurt for him. He's doing the best he can as Corrine's Shield but even he may not be able to protect her from what lies ahead. *chews nails*

There is a lot of action in this book especially since Corrine and the others are training and learning how to utilize their powers to the best of their abilities. The twists and turns keep you guessing and the ending...well, all I can say is...NO!NO!NO! *shakes fist* ;)(less)

I really loved Pyxis, so I was looking forward to getting back into this world that K.C. Neal has created for us. I quickly got reacquainted with the characters and easily fell back into the story. Corrine is still a great strong character that I enjoyed. She is trying to get used to her connection with Mason and also learn her full potential as the Pyxis and what powers she has. She needs to learn how to use influence without the liquids and how to combine them to work the best. She also needs to learn how to work with her Union to fight off potential threats. She sometimes lets her wandering mind get the best of her, and I found myself quite angry, no not angry, disappointed with her is a better word for it. It's not just her wandering mind, but the actions she takes sometimes. I understand her need to have more information and learn what she can, but she also is risking putting her Union in more danger than necessary, going against her great aunts request, and also in my opinion, going against the trust of her Union. I won't go into the details on that, but I really was upset by Corrine's behavior at times. She also has a little bit of an insecurity/jealousy issue in this. I understand where she is coming from, but I think that she lets it get to her more than it should and she totally over thinks things.

If you thought things were intense in the first one, they get a lot more crazy in this one. Harriet is more dangerous than ever and she is targeting not only Corrine and her Union, but the rest of the town too. Harriet is vengeful and powerful and will do whatever she can to take the role of Pyxis from Corrine. With the help of the Shield from the Perth region Corrine is able to figure out the weird website (if you have read the first one you know what website I am talking about) and is able to contact the other Convergences. I think she is a little too trustworthy with giving them info, but that's just me. She starts to crave seeing Zane because he can teach her things. It is foretold that they will be together, but Corrine fears what that might mean for Mason. I was so mad at Corrine trying to seek out Zane so often. I felt like it was such a betrayal to Mason.

This book was a perfect blend. It had action, adventure, character growth, and a lot of family stuff. I really like when family is a part of the story. I loved that we got to see the characters grow not only as individuals, but as a team. I really enjoyed that getting the whole Union to trust each other and work together was a constant struggle, but made them all stronger too. There are some very touching and emotional moments in the book as well, but nothing that had me clutching a box of tissues. I think that this was an excellent second book in the Pyxis series and I am pining for the next book! (less)

I found this series interesting enough to keep reading, but not a complicated plot by any means- I believe this is for a younger age group than I usually read (I read a lot of teen fantasy, but that can encompass a big difference in the maturity of the intended reader). As far as second books go, Alight: Peril (Pyxis book 2) was absolutely amazing! Having gotten to know all of the main characters is book one, I was ready for some action in this book and definitely was not disappointed! Every turn of the page brought something new, whether it was a new fight, the nearness of the Summer Solstice, or seeing Zane, the hot Aussie Shield. *swoon* A very well-written, fast paced novel that leaves me breathless for the next book.
