Penned by Whedon and Brett Matthews, who wrote several episodes of Firefly as well as Dark Horse''s final Angel comics series and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature "Dark Fury," Serenity follows a ship full of mercenaries, fugitives and one law-abiding prostitute in their pursuit for fast cash and a little peace along the fringes of space. The ragtag crew of Sereni...more

I am a HUGE Firefly fan and just finished rewatching the series for, I don't know, the 7th time? Something like that. There is also a new comic book store within walking distance of my place (Escapist Comics on Claremont, check it out!). I was in there hoping to pick up The Cloud Searchers, but Mal and Book et al looked down at me from the shelf, so despite past disappointment with some of the Buffy comics, I picked some up. Unsurprisingly, kind of disappointing. This volume is a prelude to the...more

I think the biggest problem with this for me is that I just now got to read it; it may have had more of an impact if I'd actually read it BEFORE watching Serenity, but alas. Post-movie, it's kind of pointless: it fills in some of the gaps between the series and the film, but not in any way the film fails to. The plot resurrects a character that in my mind should have stayed dead, only to kill him again, and makes very poor use of the Two by Two, Hands of Blue guys. Also, the art annoyed me. Some...more

The story was okay and the dialog was very much what I want from the Firefly / Serenity crew, but the appalling interior art, especially the renderings of the women, was such a distraction that I really didn't enjoy this.

It gets two stars instead of one because of a few very nice panels (guest artist covers and so on) and because of how much I enjoy the series in general.

Some of the bits about costuming for the series and movie, collected at the end of the hardcover edition, were interesting as...more

I love Firefly. I love Serenity. I love graphic novels. I did not love Serenity: Those Left Behind. It was a pale imitation of the canon's greatness.

What I didn't like:
The back of the comic said this bridged the gap between the show and the movie, but it didn't. Apparently it is the first in a series that eventually bridges the gap. I don't need to buy and read multiple comics to get to the end of a comic series that leaves me at the beginning of the movie I've already seen (multiple times).

It's a bit of let down. I had high hopes from this one considering it was going to fill the gaps between tv series and the movie. Though it did fill those gaps, story wasn't really very compelling. Art was okay, but I don't know why the artist failed to make Kaley, Inara, Simon and River look like the actors who played them, most of the time. This comic had potential to be very good. But, it seems that they tried to cram too many things into it and in the end, didn't succeed in making those work...more

Serenity: Those Left Behind is a graphic novel that takes place between the end of the Firefly TV series and the film, Serenity. It explains why two major characters from the TV series had such small roles in the film.

The story left a lot to be desired. The characters all sounded right, but the book was too short to show any real depth, character- or plotwise. It filled in the missing time between the series and film, but didn't really tell me anything new.

The artwork, however, was lovely. There...more

I went into Goodwill looking for cosplay costuming for several ST and FMA characters, but then saw an amazing brown leather trench coat. Not only did it fit me - an absolute miracle, given my short size and very narrow shoulders - but it made me feel completely kick-butt. I took it home with me. No freaking duh. I AM a Browncoat, and every single time I wear that trench coat, I have problems remembering I am NOT Malcolm Reynolds, I do NOT captain Serenity, and the Alliance is NOT after me.

So whe...more

Serenity: Those Left Behind is the first in a series of comics by Joss Whedon that bridge the gap, somewhat, between the last episode of the Firefly TV series and the movie Serenity, and flesh out a bit of the back story for some of our favourite characters. You are probably going to get the most out of this if you are a big fan of the Firefly universe, but for those unlucky few who are unfamiliar with Firefly, there is still plenty on offer in this book.

Those Left Behind tells begins with the S...more

MORE FIREFLY IN MY LIFE!

This covers some of the gap between the ending of Firefly and the movie Serenity, and it does an excellent job with it!
And to see more of these characters is always a pleasure. It could have been a bit longer (as in it should just never end), but the length fits the length of an original Firefly episode, and I like that.

I also like the art, something I forgot to mention in my revi...more

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Quite frankly the extra 1/2 star is only because I have such a geek-on for this ill-fated tv series and the followup movie - and don't even get me started on Nathan Fillion.

It's not bad - really - the artwork is beautiful, the dialogue pithy (thankfully written by Whedon himself), the story - well it wasn't on par with my all time fave series episode Objects in Space, but it was a good 2nd or 3rd tier type episode - not great, but solid.

As a fan of Firefly, I was naturally disappointed that it had such a short life as a tv series, and ecstatic when it was given a second shot at life with the movie. However, there were a lot of plot points which got established in the tv series, but never had a chance to come to fruition. The movie wasn’t able to resolve everything, so I had high hopes for this comic.

Mostly I was very satisfied with this book. It did a good job of rounding up the unanswered questions for the series, and giving t...more

So, I had some library fines. A book that I checked out for Jefferson was left lying on the living room floor. Solomon picked it up, and with seemingly no effort at all, popped one of the sections right out of the binding. I inquired at the library, and there was no repair option. Basically, I had to pay $20 to replace the book. I spent a lot of time grousing and contemplating options and avoiding the library entirely until one night my husband asked if I would be willing to donate $20 to the li...more

If you are a fan of Joss Whedon's TV series Firefly and its cinematic follow-up Serenity, then this is a comic that is right for you. Chronologically, it takes place after the series and before the movie. Unfortunately, it does seem that prior knowledge of the universe and the characters is necessary for full understanding of this book, but it would still be an enjoyable read even without that knowledge. Captain Mal and his crew are, as always, running low on cash in their spaceship that needs f...more

I don't usually enjoy graphic novels, but I'll read anything that lets me live once more in the world of Firefly/Serenity, even for a little while. Since Joss Whedon himself wrote the story, it's like my favorite show came back to life for a half hour or so. (It's a very short novel.)

This episode fills in a little of the gap between the end of the tv show and the movie, which was helpful. It's about a job that goes wrong (don't they always?) and takes place when both Inara and Shepherd Book are...more

Okay, just to start, I am a HUGE fan of Firefly and Serenity. So, whenever I discovered that there were graphic novels based on the show, I knew without hesitation that I would find some way to read them. Thankfully enough I could get this one from my library, but it seems that finding the next few is going to be quite the task. (Amazon, perhaps?)

Anywho Browncoats, I don't expect that you'll be disappointed. This story is a prelude to Serenity and details a mission that the crew take on in the h...more

If you love Firefly, you will love this.

This is basically just a small glimpse into what’s taking place after Firefly ends, but before the events of the movie Serenity*. Inara still wants to leave, and Shepherd Book is still struggling with his morals and flying with a group of thieves and smugglers. We also see a reappearance of Lawrence Dobson, an Alliance secret agent from the tv show. It makes me happy just to “be” with the crew again. I miss Mal, and Wash, and Kaylee.

The story is interestin...more

Somewhat disappointingly, this is not a story about what happens to Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of Serenity after the Rapture. It's an interstitial between the abrupt ending of Firefly and the Serenity movie, covering some of the difficulty the crew has getting work, as well as Shepherd Book and Inara's departures. We also see an old antagonist, Lawrence Dobson, return for revenge.

In case you don't remember him, Dobson was an Alliance agent on the trail of Simon and River in the first episode....more

On a list of 'brilliant but cancelled' shows, Firefly is near the top, in my opinion. This graphic novel is what would have been an episode, if the show had not been cancelled, and is a bridge between the show, and what happened in the movie.

You can almost hear the characters saying their lines, because the dialogue was written by Joss Whedon, and is 100% true to the show. I didn't think the chinese worked quite as well in this format, but overall it made me miss the show, to read it.

The first of two Joss Whedon graphic novels I read this weekend, Those Left Behind attempts to plug the gap between the Firefly TV show and its movie followup, Serenity. The meshing is imperfect at best, with an attempt to cram too many unresolved threads into too little space. I can’t help but wish that Whedon had actually gotten at least a couple of full seasons in which to flesh out the rich world he clearly had in mind, but it is nice to see the voice of the show continued here.

Picking up Those Left Behind was like picking up another episode of Firefly, just in a different format. It was the same characters, using the same kind of words, in the same settings. (the Chinese curses seem to lose a little in print, though, probably because I can't read or even sound them out.) The artists rendered the characters' appearances a little differently than the actors, aside from the beautiful cover. But once I adjusted to that difference, I was back in the beloved world of Firefl...more

(In reality, somewhere between three and four stars for me. If you are unfamiliar with the series this was based on, think "three at best". If you are a dedicated fan, think "solid four - four and a half".)

One, I really wanted to like this one more. Which means that my expectations have been high, therefore I was harsher where it failed. Yet...
Two, the rating is still biased in the favour of this comic. Nevertheless...
Three, it doesn't stop me from poking fun at creator's attachment to the verse...more

I absolutely love the Firefly franchise and everything about it , so diving into the comics was a no brainer for me. Joss Whedon is consistently entertaining in his story telling. "Serenity: Those Left Behind" was a good chapter in the Firefly universe , I definitely would only recommend this to fans. It's essentially the filler between the TV series and movie , a prequel for Serenity. My favourite part might be Nathan Fillion's introduction , sharing is childhood memories of comics and briefly...more

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Firefly the show. I thought it would be awesome to find out all the extra stuff we didn't get to see, and jumped at the chance to check out the comics.

But this... This was disappointing. In fact, it was bad – even though it hurts to say it.

First off, there's the art... It's not horrendous, but it's not great. I wouldn't necessarily mind that it didn't quite capture the likenesses of the actors – that, afterall, is difficult to pull off once, let alone multiple times in...more

Those Left Behind is one of those unfortunate adaptions in the "bridge the gap" category. A category that almost always dooms a project to failure. It's not necessarily the writer's fault either. It's just a bad place to be. Look no further than this very comic for proof that an exceptionally talented writer isn't immune to the negative effects of bridge-the-gap territory. This comic volume is meant to fill in some of the details between the short lived television series Firefly and it's big scr...more

The plot of Those Left Behind was probably intended to be an early-season-2 episode of Firefly that unfortunately was never shot. As such, it features a job gone bad, an enemy from the past, and some fancy fightin' and flyin'. This, of course, translates quite well to the graphic novel medium. The illustration and dialogue are both well done and true to the series.
The true gem of this work, though, is Joss' Brief History of the Universe, Circa 2516. It explains a lot of things about his high-co...more

Yes, I'm a completist. Lately that means that I'm getting my Joss Whedon fix by completing all his series that were dumped from television to reappear in comic book (aka graphic novel) form.

This is a decent and speedy read that answers some questions that separate the series Firefly from the movie Serenity. I'm rating it a little lower because it is such a small slice out of an expanding world that was just starting to develop. It's over before it really starts and it doesn't give itself as much...more

I love the Firefly universe but I've never been a comic book fan. I never read them as a child and I've never been able to get into them as an adult. I found that the trademark banter of the characters was a little slowed down because I was constantly trying to figure out who said what first(I attributed this to being a comic book newbie). I still loved the story and I felt all warm and fuzzy seeing the crew again...even if they were illustrated. The illustrations were actually fantastic, though...more

I thought this was a great tie in between the show and the movies. All of the characters still had their personalities, and they all shined. Ha...shiny. Anyway, I do have one minor complaint. I wish it was longer. I felt some of the fight scenes were rushed, and some of the other scenes jumped around a bit. In TV form the jump would have caused suspense, surprise, and shock, but in this form it made me flip the page back a few times until I finally got it. That's probably something wrong with me...more
