24 Hours (Mississippi #2)
by
Greg Iles
24 HOURS --- that's how long it takes a madman to pull off the perfect crime. He's done it before, he'll do it again, and no one can stop him.
But this time, he's just picked the wrong family to terrorize. Because Will and Karen Jennings aren't going to watch helplessly as he victimizes them. And they aren't going to let him get away with it.

this book is aggrevatingly stupid and poorly written. It reminds me of the da vinci code where a lot of the dialog is solely to guide the idiot reader through the ridiculous plot. i can't believe this book is so popular. i could barely get through it. at least the da vinci code was all about how religion is contrived by powerful white men so that white men could remain in power.

I have been delighted after enjoying Greg Iles "The Quiet Game" and as avid reader coming upon a good author proceeded to buy more of his books, but "24 hours", I confess, got me a little disappointed

This book centered on a kidnap-for-ransom of Abby Jennings, Dr. Will Jennings daughter. The perpetrator was Joe Hickey who was assisted by his wife Cheryl and his cousin Huey, who was mentally challenged. When Dr. Jennings goes to a medical conference to give the keynote speech, his daughter is abducted and his wife is held captive in their house. After the speech, Will is approached by a young lady who forces her way into his room at gunpoint. They are expected to come up with $200,000 the next...more

What a fast rush of reading to the heart pounding beat. For many this will be a one seat read. I really enjoyed this one, a packed action thriller. The whole time the images were in my mind, a definite movie like book. I should have known, it is a movie, the title is Trapped, now I must go watch it. I feel like I may have seen it because the story felt to 'real' to me, deja vu like.

A fast paced thriller that runs the gamit of emotions and, like most of Iles' books, doesn't disappoint. A doctor's family is at risk when the six year old daughter is taken for ransom and they aren't going to let the kidnappers get away with it.
I liked this book. It was a recommendation from my father and he has never steered me wrong with his suggestions. Have you ever been in a very serious, dangerous position? Think about an impending car accident that you know you cannot avoid. I hope that you will be able to say, "No!" to my question, but if you know what I am talking about, think about how everything in time seemed to surreally SLOW DOWN. That is the magical feeling that this author has captured with this book. As...more
I loved this book. It kept me on the edge of my sit the entire time. It is a page turner. I finished in a couple of days and I am a slow reader. Another great book from Greg. Read this book, you will not be disappointed.
Capably written thriller from Mississippi author Greg Iles. Basically this is his take on the traditional kidnapping-for-ransom tale, featuring a doctor's family that gets taken for a ride by a clever villain and a couple of his colorful cohorts. As indicated on the cover copy, the family does in fact "fight back" and for me, that's the point at which the story takes hold. Generally, this isn't the type of book I read (and I had a couple of minor quibbles along the way) but overall, Il...more
A movie was made of this book, starring Kevin Bacon and Charlize Theron. The young daughter of a successful doctor and his wife kidnapped. The head honcho kidnapper (Bacon, in the movie) stays with the mother (Theron), while the knockout female kidnapper's assistant stays with the doctor (who is at a convention) until daylight, when he can access his bank account to get the money. The kidnapper didn't know that the child is diabetic, so his careful plans must be changed to keep the girl alive un...more

This is a fast paced, thrilling, page turner. Every writer is told to throw obstacles into their protagonist's path, and Isles does that well here. Hickey, a brilliant kidnapper crazed by a desire for revenge seizes Will and Karen Jenning's 5 year-old daughter Abby. Hickey's motives unfold gradually and Isle peppers each scene with realistic details. Even the accomplices of the villain, Cheryl and Huey, win some sympathy---and that is the sign of a good story teller. And, finally, even tho you...more
The book opens with a kidnapped child being released in a busy McDonald's parking lot. The kidnappers have a devious method of divide and conquer to get what they want, and they have their sights on a new family. It's every parent's nightmare. The book opens with tension and never lets up. The only knock I have comes at the end where credibility is stretched molecule thin (no spoilers here, you'll know it when you see it).

Joe Hickey is a man with a plan... the perfect plan. He, along with his wife and cousin, kidnap the child of an unsuspecting doctor. His cousin keeps the daughter, he watches over the helpless wife, and his wife keeps an eye on the doctor who is away from the family at a medical conference. Hickey's intricate plan allows the three of them to walk away scott free and $200,000 richer. How does he know it's the perfect plan, because they've executed it five times before and now they're going for br...more
This was a gripping saga - any parents worst nightmare - a child kidnapped.
The only reason I witheld a couple of stars was because of the 'R' content regarding sexual implications. Usually when I run into such I close the book without finishing but this tale had me hooked and I was able to turn a couple of pages, unread, and still maintain the storyline.
Greg Isles was recommended by a friend. I think I'll try another.

I just learned about checking out audobooks through public libraries on line. It is at wilbur.com. I checked this book out, enjoyed listening to it, but don't like I can't figure out how to download it onto my iPod - therefore I had to just sit in front of the computer and listen to the book. Good concept, though.
I did enjoy the book - didn't particularly like the narrator's voice but that is just my opinion.

another thriller by greg isles, well written, fast paced, with some twists that literally make you sit up and say "what?!". a story of a kidnapping fought with a family's love and determination, with his usual ability to tap not only into the hearts and minds of his heroes, but also into the hearts and minds of his villians, making you shudder with his realism. greg isles is always a guarenteed delight.
This was the first Greg Iles book that I read, and I have gone on to read all of his titles. I had a friend recommend another Iles novel to me but the book store was out of that one, so i bought this one instead. I was surprised to find that the prologue to the book takes place in Jackson, Mississippi about 1 mile from the house I was living in at the time. The majority of the book takes place in Madison. It was kind of surreal to be reading the third chapter, which is set in the "Medic...more
A good suspense book. A 5 year old girl has been kidnapped and the kidnapper has the perfect plan to receive the ransom money without worrying about the police getting involved.
Not overly complex but the author does a good job of keeping the suspense going and describing the action. The bad guys could have been a bit more complex. I'm more of a fan of intelligent, analytical, amoral bad guys than brutish dominating mysoginistic bad guys. But, that's more of a style choice.

This is the first book I've read in a while, so I'm not sure if my excitement about it relates more to the story or my simple enthusiasm to be reading once again. Overall, the story is fantastic and gripping, I couldn't put it down and it was a pretty quick read at only 420 pages or so. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good suspense/thriller novel.
Greg Iles writes fast novels and when I'm in the mood for one, he's my pick! I do find that many of his more recent novels are a bit disturbing and graphic -- 24 Hours was a real page turner and I was thoroughly entertained without being too disturbed! The ending is a bit "out there" as far as believability -- but a good ending nonetheless!
I listened to this novel in the Playaway format; read by Dick Hill. His narration was just fantastic, bringing the book to life. I'm not sure I would have gotten as much entertainment value out of it in the paperback format. Dick Hill is a genius and I will read/listen to anything narrated by him.........all suggestions welcome!
Greg Iles wrote my favorite mystery of all time - Mortal Fear. I have not loved all his books but I'm thinking this one is going into the 'Liked a Whole Lot' category. Will and Karen Jennings have a nice life with their young daughter. Until they become the next victim of a clever and very practical kidnapper. In general, I think the kidnapping of small children is a too easy central plot device but in the hands of this craftsman, it's nearly peripheral to the match of cunning that is the re...more
This is my first Greg Iles book. Not knowing what to expect, it started off as a easy read, slow and simple. Not confusing with minimal characters.
As the book picked up, it became an intriguing novel that had the range of emotions from human compassion to cold blooded murder. Tenderness to action packed. Love to honesty.

Good book. I liked the suspense of the child kidnapped and held hostage with the mother and father held in different locations. It was riveting how the story unfolded, especially since the little girl kidnapped is diabetic. I have never read one of Greg Iles books, but I'll definitely read another one now.
Wow! What a book, could not put it down, unlike many other i have red. The fun of reading a suspense book is trying to guess where the story is going, could not do it with this book. The story is great, some nice twists, this is my favorite Greg Iles book. Others to look out for are True Evil and Mortal Fear
Decent book...might have been more into it if I wasn't also in school and busy with other things. Still, interesting plot, no real twists, though...I like a book with a surprise in it. I would check out other of his books, if I ran across them in the $1 goodwill bookstore where I got this one.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and had me questioning what I would do to protect my family. This is also one of the few books I've read that had me feeling compassion for the bad guy. A truly wonderful book. Greag Iles is one of my favorite authors!
Second Greg Iles book I read. A great suspense/thriller filled with real-life people fighting to save their family. I couldn't stop turning the pages. Very fast-paced. Wonderful if you love suspense thrillers! I'm going to have to track down the movie now to rent it.
I REALLY wanted to give this 3.5 stars - I didn't think 3 stars did it justice, and 4 was just a tad too generous. I know I'm beating a dead horse but Goodreads, can we please expand the rating system? Even a 7-star system would be a major improvement.
On to the book. In general, I like Iles' work and this started out with a great deal of promise. I couldn't put it down until about 2/3 of the way through. From the point that the FBI gets hands-on in their involvement in resolvi...more
