"Charlie is one of those rare dogs who leave a lasting impression. Although many people loved him, no one knew him the way Barbara did. Their relationship was extraordinarily close. In this very heartfelt, special book, Barbara captures Charlie's character and their relationship with clarity and immediacy. This is a tender yet very real story of the love and devotion of a...more

To many, a family pet is just that-a companion and friend. To others the family pet is a member of the family, treasured as such and treated as any other members within the family. To those who know what I am talking about, that noble creature whether large or small encompasses us with their warmth and intelligence.

In Charlie: A love story, by Barbara Lampert, we are introduced to her best friend an...more

WOW!! This book was so close to home it was a little freaky. So many things about Barbara & Charlie’s relationship are the same in my relationship with my dog baby Patches. She called Charlie puppy. I call my dog puppy. Charlie had to be near her and touch her. Patches always sits practically on top of my with her paw on my leg. I could go on and on. Patches is just now starting to show signs of getting old, like brown spots, not wanting to play as much and being a pickier eater. Same as Cha...more

As an animal lover I always enjoy reading a story about a remarkable dog. But in this story instead of just reading about a wonderful dog, I was also allowed to glimpse the amazing relationship between Charlie and the human he loved.
The author writes in journal style, painting a wonderful picture of the garden she tends, but as her beloved Golden Charlie starts battling health issues the journal becomes more about him and his unwavering spirit to live. I really found myself immersed in this sto...more

No Matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich." -Louis Sabin

We are a multigenerational cat family. I requested to review CHARLIE: A LOVE STORY because I understand the bond between human and animal, whether it is cat, dog, or other creature. Barbara Lampert shares her incredible relationship with Charlie, a Golden Retriever. That relationship, no matter how heartwarming and heartbreaking, serves as a metaphor for how we can grow as individuals, families,...more

Acceptance we all want and need it. Unconditional love and understanding are vital to becoming who we are and developing long lasting relationships with others. But, sometimes where and how we get this acceptance is not in the usual place or from the usual source. Children are precious but not everyone wants to be a parent. Others fall in love with their pets and find they fill the spaces in their hearts with more love and joy th...more

I wasn't expecting to become so emotionally invested in this story. I don't have any pets, but I do have three small kids, and found it easy to relate to alot of the Author's emotions in the book.

One of the things I was most surprised by was how intimate it would be to read through these very personal journal entries. They started out focusing on gardening and doggie Charlie puttering around with her. Since Charlie is getting older he begins facing a multitude of health issues. As the story prog...more

Charlie: A Love Story is a beautifully written memoir about a loving relationship between Charlie, a Golden Retriever and his owner, author Barbara Lampert. The memoir is written in a journal style, Barbara had been keeping a journal about her garden, when at the age of eleven, Charlie started having some health issues, and gradually the journal entries became mostly about him. The journal entries span from June 13, 2001 through November 14, 2003, which document the final years of Charlie's life...more

This slim book startled me! I was surprised by my reaction. I knew from the beginning of Charley: A Love Story by Barbara Lampert that she was a dog lover. But that is not reason for this book. The author had an extraordinary relationship with Charlie. Unless you have had a very special bond with an animal, you may not "get" this book.

I get it because even though I am a dog person, there was one animal in my life that was truly unbelievable and unforgetable, a cat named Happy Day. When I had to...more

The story of Charlie is a sentimental journey, told from the twilight of his life. Charlie is a Golden Retriever, one of stoic character and full of life. The author, Charlie’s owner, Barbara Lampart, narrates the story of the last few years of Charlie’s life, with all the trials that they had to overcome, but how her love for Charlie was an overriding constant.

It is easy to see how close the bond is between Charlie and Barbara, and I think anyone who has ever loved any animal will be able to re...more

This book arrived in my mailbox this week, so decided to read it today. This is a book for animal lovers, especially dog lovers, of which I am one. I have a 12 year old toy poodle, which like most dogs has his cute little ways, and cute little things he does to entertain me and keep me happy.

Barbara Lampert told her story about Charlie in her journal which she made into this book. She tells us about her love for Charlie, her Golden Retriever and his many health problems, and many surgeries. Her...more

Charlie: A Love Story by Barbara Lampert
★★★☆☆

Charlie was the perfect dog, loving, devoted and Barbara’s best friend. Barbara loved dogs but the connection she had with Charlie was deeper and more intimate than the connection she had with any of her other dogs. When Charlie was eleven years old, he got really sick but fought to stay alive. Charlie endured a lot but because of his love for life and Barbara, he never gave up.

This was a heartfelt book that evoked some strong emotions, especially be...more
