Written by one of my dear friends, this novel is the story of two college roommates, life-long friends, perhaps mismatched if one considers their very different Boston vs. Two Rock, South Carolina backgrounds. Lilly Covington, the main character, reinvents herself in college from scholarship status to someone who is eligible to catch a wealthy frat boy from nearby Duke or Davidson. Years later, married and divorced twice from that frat boy who is now dating a sleek, successful younger woman, she...more
The Chick Palace by Leslie Davis Guccione
The mark of a good book to me is how much it sweeps me up into its world. Leslie Davis Guccione does this powerfully as she brings the people and settings of Lake Allamuchy to life and gives insight into human nature in the process. She brings back memories of the endless summers of youth spent on boats, at lakes, in little cottages. Perhaps she brings back memories we wish we had.

I found this book to be a quick read. The story line was in some way predictable, but a feel good chic lit story none the less. The characters were interesting but lacked much depth. On more than one occasion I thought the author was going to take time to unravel the characters, yet it seems Guccione stops short of allowing the reader that insight. Perhaps most troubling for me was the actual writing style. Often I was confused and I found the dialogue to be somewhat uncomfortable. I eventually...more
There should be an option on Goodreads for "TRIED to read". I am shelving it for now in hopes that one day, when all the books in the world have disappeared, I will have this book to read. After all, I saw some good reviews. I can't understand how this author writes. The sentences run on and I have to add my own pause to comprehend what I am reading. If anybody else had a hard time reading it but really ended up enjoying it, I would love to hear from you. Until then, I am moving on to a differen...more
I have to agree with the others who mentioned the author's awkward writing style-- the sentences were too long and lacked commas. Between that and the odd placement of phrases, I found myself rereading some sentences over and over, inserting pauses, or rephrasing them until it made sense. Very annoying. The development of the characters was mediocre, with the characterization of Lilly, a Southerner prone to "redneck tantrums", stereotypical. She might as well have said, "Kiss my grits"!

This book is so full of cliches about
1. The South
2. The east coast
3. Women who want to make sure you know they have money
That it is unreadable.
Any self-respecting composition teacher would mark as trite and cliche and return as failing. This gets published? Geeze.
Note: If the author does not like your review, she will send you an email letting you know...
