I encourage anyone who is planning on reading this to avoid the synopsis. It's misleading and gives hints to the plot. I don't think I'm giving anything way, though, to say that this book is about angels. I've had bad luck in the past with angel books, so I dug into this one with a sense of trepidation. Lucy Swing, however, did a good job at winning me over.

A very imaginative YA paranormal thriller. Ms. Swing is a gifted storyteller and I enjoyed being pulled inside Jade’s anything-but-normal world. There is enough mystery where you’re constantly trying to figure things out and some bubble gum romance that will surely sate the youthful reader. I won a copy of Feathermore in early April, and like everything last month it got put on the back burner until the semester ended.

Jade is a seemingly typical high school student, except for an intimidating voice in her head that seems to be warning her and a strange recurring dream. Luckily, she has Claire and Nate, her two best friends and a handsome new student, Avan, who all seem to help make things a little better. Soon, however, the peaceful facade is broken when tragedy strikes, and the subject of cryptic warnings becomes clear. Jade must come to terms with who she is, and how it will impact her love for Avan.

The paranormal aspects of this novel were unpredictable and really well played out. I enjoyed her use of lore, and although I’ve read a fair share of paranormal novels, and I was quite surprised as Jade’s secrets began to unfold. Even though the title of the book points to it pretty clearly, even if you figure it out from the beginning there are plenty of surprises. It was also amusing that Jade’s mind always jumped to vampires…

I got a good laugh out of that one.

In fact, there are so many questions throughout the novel, it’s hard to discuss anything that happens without giving away one of the mysteries. It is a well put together novel that keeps readers wondering what’s going to happen next, what creatures exist in this world, and how is everything going to be resolved.

The ending was probably the most shocking, horrifying, tragic, and emotional part. I couldn’t believe what happened. The main issues of this novel were certainly resolved, but not without bringing up some even bigger issues for the next novel. I’m actually (I say actually because I haven’t been reading much YA lately) on the edge of my seat waiting for the next in the series.

My biggest squabble with the book were some annoying formatting issues. I downloaded the version for Kindle from Smashwords, so I don’t know if anyone else experienced these problems. Luckily, these problems decreased greatly after the first chapter.

My verdict – If you like Young Adult Paranormal, Feathermore is a great read.(less)

It often happens that the paranormal elements in the story take a back seat to the romance in a lot of the current Young Adult novels that are out right now. But, guess what, my fellow readers? That does not happen here. And it was refreshing. Lucy Swing manages to create quite a heart-wrenching story in Feathermore that is packed with suspense, intrigue, and mystery from start to finish. This book is just shrouded in mystery and there is more to every single character than meets the eye, not just the protagonist, which was really interesting.

Which leads me to the characterization of this novel. I just loved it. Jade, our female lead in this novel, has a great voice. She is a regular high school student - well, so she thinks - who likes to hang out with her friends and family. She may not be the most popular person in her town or school but she has quite a lovely personality because she is nice but not a pushover and she is incredibly funny and sarcastic. And as the story develops her reactions to things were refreshing. She has quite the sense of humor and instead of accepting the changes that are happening to her immediately, she freaks out and is resistant. Her feelings about things just felt authentic because how can a person take it lightly that their real background is supernatural and that they are not really human as they thought, right? That is enough to make any person even lose their mind. I also liked that Claire and Nate who are Jade's best friends, are also an integral part of the story, with their own hidden history and character struggles. It was great that the family and friends of Jade were really important to her life, it gave the story a realistic touch and it helped add dimensionality to Jade's life story.

Another aspect of Feathermore that I really liked was the world-building. It was intricate and complex and dark. Definitely dark and mysterious. And what I liked about it is that the author didn't quite reveal from the start what the true identities of the characters were and what was going on. The reader gets to learn along with Jade what she truly is, what is after her, who her friends really were and it was interesting. The title does give a hint but the lore behind it was surprising from what I've read in other angel centered books. It was unique. Speaking of complex angel lore, I loved that the villain in this book was not your typical stoic/machiavellic power thirsty villain with a little too much time on his hands. No. In Feathermore we have a lady villain and boy is she ruthless and vengeful and her identity was quite surprising. She is a prominent figure in angel lore/myth and I liked the twist the author gave to her story.

When it comes to the romance in Feathermore. I would have to say that it was sweet. As you're reading, it feels as if this book is gonna have your typical case of instantaneous love at first sight. And all you can think is, "well, okay, the guy is cute and nice and has charm but why does the protagonist like him so much if they've just met" BUT as the story develops, the reader soon learns that that is not the case. There is actually quite an immense reason for Jade's attraction to Avan which is the male lead in this story. And that reason was quite layered and unique. There also was another character in this book named Blake that I felt had an interesting connection to Jade, though, for those who hate love triangles, no worries. It never quite reaches that status in this book. The main love story is Jade and Avan. Although, maybe in book two there is potential for a love triangle with Blake in the mix? It's hard to tell since Blake's true identity was left as a mystery even until the end of the book, which, in my opinion, was quite cruel because his scenes in this book were the most fascinating. Who is Blake? - I was dying to know but I'm hoping book two will clear that up.

My advice: Read this book. It had an amazing cliffhanger. Did I say amazing? I shall repeat myself. It was good. The writing in this novel is very fluid. Lucy Swing definitely has a way with words. It was easy to get lost in her writing. Feathermore was dark but fun - due to Jade's amazing sense of humor as a character and it really felt like a paranormal book. It was full of mystery. It almost felt like an episode of the show Supernatural where everything starts off happy and blissful and then it all descends into madness, basically. I really liked this book.

Favorite quote in this book: "Once again, the vampire idea came to me. But it couldn't be. We definitely didn't drink blood, and we were perfectly fine in the bright sunshine - we didn't sparkle or go up in flames" - pg. 140 &141

I read this book in a day. The story kept me engaged right from the start, diving right in with the mysteries that I instantly wanted answers to. Even when I got answers in the story, more questions arose, and there was always one more mystery I wanted solved, so I simply couldn't put it down. Jade just coasts through life. She is not super popular, but she is also content with the friends she does have. I love characters who bring sarcasm and humor into stories instead of just brooding and self-pity.

It’s clear early on that Claire’s and Nate’s relationship with Jade goes beyond simple friendship. They’re secretive and seem to be looking out for her on a higher level. Once we learn that Jade was found wandering the woods on Halloween as a five year old, and adopted by the woman who found her, the intrigue really begins. Who is Jade, why does she hear a strange voice in her head, and is Avan more than just a normal human guy?

I really liked Jade. She’s got a cool sense of style; I loved the retro, rock band t-shirts she wore and found myself laughing at her sarcastic, inner babbling. As the book goes on, and Jade finally starts to learn who she is, I enjoyed her character more and more. She’s funny and determined, and I felt a lovely sense of vindication when she sent that bitch Amy flying through the air. It’s always satisfying to see a bully humiliated in front of her friends. Avan, as Jade’s love interest didn’t do it for me. I felt he had very little depth, and wondered what sort of boyfriend would hang out with the bully who constantly torments his girlfriend?

There were a few parts in the book I couldn’t understand. Jade sees a strange creature stalking her and easily lets Claire and Nate talk her into believing it was just a man. She watches a weird being moving through the hallway at school, but gets distracted and seems to forget all about it. Jade also wonders if Claire has lost a family member. How could she be best friends with someone for years and not know if they had parents? Even when we learn what Jade is and how she came to be where she is (trying desperately to avoid spoilers here!), we’re not given a full explanation, which I found a tad annoying. However, when you like a character as much as I did Jade, you can overlook some plot holes.

Obviously Jade is more than human, but you’ll have to read this yourself to find out exactly what she is, and what her best pals are protecting her from. Well-written and engaging, Feathermore is an enjoyable read with a cool leading character. (less)

This story is original, nicely paced and well-written. The characters are carefully constructed and realistic (even considering the supernatural aspect of the story). I also loved the supporting characters, Claire and Nate, because they were there for Jade the entire time and they really wanted the best for her and tried to look out for her. In the end I was really upset at what they did, but that was all part of the book and quite necessary. I still really love their characters, but I felt bad for Jade because of what she went through during that last stretch of the book. It was literally like she lost everybody she'd ever cared for.

I really liked Avan in this book because of how caring he seemed and he was a great love interest. He and Jade seemed like a really great pair together, and Avan's that type of guy that would do almost anything for a girl he really cares about, and maybe even loves. I'm pretty sure he actually did in end. I read this a few days ago, and I can't remember the specific details of the plot, but enough to write a review with my praises and complaints. But don't worry, the complaints in here are very minimal.

One of my complaints were the plot holes. I was a little confused at parts and some of the plot events weren't that well portrayed, but that was only at one or two parts, although at a more important part. one example was how Jade was a fallen angel. It was explained, but not fully, so I was a little confused at how everything about that really worked out. But, the rest of the plot was really great and everything was extremely well-written. The whole plot of the book flowed smoothly, except the one or two small sections I mentioned. It was really easy to get absorbed into this novel.

The ending was so tragic! I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room, but then I remembered how stinking expensive the thing was so I satisfied myself by throwing a pillow at my brother. (I know, I'm a great sister, right? But he threw one back at me, so we're even!) I can't wait to read the next book now because that cliffhanger was brutal and I was devastated by the ending. This book was like Lauren Oliver's Delirium in a way because of what the ending was like. Fans of her books will definitely enjoy this one.(less)

She thinks she might be crazy and tries to continue about her life and enjoy the company of her two best friends. Shortly after the school year starts, she meets Avan, He's gorgeous and the chemistry between the two of them is undeniable. Jade was slightly off put by Avan because her rival classmate/ arch-nemesis, Amy, is obviously interested in him. Things were starting to look up for the couple, when tragedy strikes and Jade begins to pull away. During Jade's attempt to pull herself together, she distances herself from Avan at times. Then one day she sees him shooting pool with some kids from school and lone and behold, Amy is among the crowd, flirting with Avan. I was beginning to like Avan and that did not sit too well with me. I understand that Jade needed some time and space to cope, and I didn't expect him to sulk at home all alone, but knowing how Jade felt about Amy he should have thought twice about even entertaining her, let alone hanging out with her.

Throughout the book, there were a few times where the story would jump ahead and I would need to catch my bearing. I wasn't lost in the story, but sometimes you read a books that will fill those uneventful moments with ramblings that aren't that relevant to the story. I have to say that I was pleased that wasn't the case. As the events in Feathermore played out, I began tapping my screen (turning the page) faster and faster. During the final moments, I was so engrossed, that when it ended I said aloud, "Well, I didn't see that one coming." lol. I wish I didn't have to wait for the second one and will definitely read it.

Favorite Part: There is a part where Jade wakes up in the all too mysterious Blake's home. She is needing answers at this time. She decides to sit in a leather chair and the seat makes a farting noise. She is immediately embarrassed and mumbles, "It...it was the chair." I could not help but giggle at that very moment. (less)

This book was quite mysterious up front with the blurb mentioning that Jade hears voices in her head and sometimes dreams of a boy with green eyes. There is no real description telling you what is special about her although you do know this is a paranormal romance. A love triangle of sorts seems imminent but Avan is obviously human and Blake, well who knows if he is even real. For the first time in a long time, I was unsure if it would be a paranormal tale involving vampires, fae, wolves, shape shifters, or angels. Okay, I admit I had my suspicions based on the title, but red herrings are rampant in all things entertainment. So since I enjoyed going into this read completely blind, I’ll allow you to enter it the same way. Let’s just say that Ms. Swing developed a rich world that in an ocean of paranormal books still managed to surprise me with several unique twists, and an intriguing plot that was exciting to get lost in, and in the end, left me completely breathless.

FEATHERMORE centers on Jade, an everyday girl entering her senior year. She has two best friends, Nate and Claire, and is wonderfully, beautifully average. Then, the creepy enters. She starts hearing a freaktastic whisper in a strange, unintelligible language. She has dreams of a dark-haired gorgeous stranger, and visions of impending danger. And when she goes to her first day back at school, so meets new kid Avan, yummy and delicious.

Avan enters as a mystery and kinda remained that way to me. He did some things that made me uncomfortable and question his loyalty, and he did things that were unbelievably swoon-worthy. But all the characters were a bit of a mystery, and I think maybe that is what makes them rock. They aren’t one-dimensional easy reads. They surprised me. All of them—Avan and Jade, Nate and Claire, and Lilith, and most especially, Blake.

The pacing was fantastic…the beginning built things perfectly, kept me engaged, and then half way through when tragedy struck, everything seemed to go on fast forward. And the freaking ending???? CRAZY!!!!!

FEATHERMORE kept me guessing. Lucy Swing had me laughing, smiling, and at times, unbelievably sad. And the end will have you jumping in your chair, pounding on your e-reader for more.

This is a book that I am sure will appeal to all lovers of the paranormal. It has everything a great book should have, it has adventure, training and action. Good vs Evil. Angels and assorted creatures. It has love, loss and teenage drama and angst. But I must say the angst is not so overwhelming as to grow boring or mundane. When i first read this, my thoughts was that this was gonna be just another angel fiction thing. but it's clearly not. I adore Jade. She is hilarious.

I really won't be able to praise Feathermore enough, it has such an in-depth, engaging storyline, interesting, like-able characters and is beautifully written and really well thought out. I think Lucy Swing is on to a winner with the first in what I believe will be an amazing new series.

Another new experience. I have never come across a beginning that had normal and weird flashing at me in the exact same tone. While Jade is just your everyday, there's still some things that are undeniably off. I have to admit it was refreshing to read about them not struggling to get together, but they actually manage without much further ado. Not something you come across in YA so much these days. Moreover, Jade struggles rather much to accept the paranormal into her life, not on one end but it always sparking up a bit here and there, leaving her unsettled with her new identity. And Jade's powers... she's using them in awe, sometimes not even thinking about it, thus kind of unaware of the real power she actually holds, and how easy it all comes to her. That was also something not quite common.

But the best of it all was... no, not the romance. Did you want me to say that? Okay, the whole concept of an angel literally falling from Heaven because she fell in love with a mortal is totally romantic and I love it, BUT! it had a great deal of a human feel to it, which was both good and bad. And the kinda, sorta triangle? Hmm... I thought it was good that it was there, but not so intense there, you know? But you know it has to come up again at some point, so I'm curious to see about it in the next installment.

But no, the best part was actually the lore it contained. Although only present at one point, when evil Lilith gives up loads of details and intel, it was fascinating. And tragic! I hope there'll actually be some more sense to it in the coming once, otherwise it would've been kind of a waste to think it through this much, wouldn't it? I also desperatly want to know how the character constallation is going to shift! I have high hopes for Fallenmore to be a good one!
