Who can say what the night might bring? Mummy tucking you up with Teddy and a cup of Ovaltine? Fireworks and frivolity? A party? Music? Dancing? Or you could be reading in bed, between clean linen sheets before falling into deep and restful sleep and sweet dreams. And who knows; the night might bring romance, or love, or sex, if you play your cards right. Or you might be w...more

What do you get up to when the night falls?

Something of the Night is a semi-autobiographical book by Ian Marchant, exploring Britain’s night time activities. Each chapter investigates something different, whether it’s bonfires and fireworks, life at motorway service stations, drunken nights out, Soho’s ladies of the night and other goings-on under the cover of darkness.

Just a short step into the book I realised the author lives just over the hills from me, though, admittedly, “just over the hill...more

Oh dear.

A while ago I read At Day's Close: a History of Nighttime, by A. Roger Ekirch (available at a brilliant library near you), which was a fascinating study of man and his nocturnal habits. Shortly afterwards I read The Longest Crawl, by Ian Marchant, which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

Imagine my joy therefore, when I heard that Mr Marchant was to write a book about The Night. Alas I was to be disappointed. As he himself admits in his rather splendid blog http://www.ianmarchant.com -

I feel quite bad about this because I'd heard good things about "The longest crawl" but this book of the night just did not work for me at all. I don't want to personalise it but here's some of the negative responses it invoked:contrived; self-indulgent; therapy; judgmental; patronising; incoherent; random; supercilious.

I hope I will read "The longest crawl" one day but not until the nasty taste in the mouth left by this book has been well and truly soaped away.

OK , cards on the table - I am a huge fan of Mr Marchant . This does not disappoint .

In this book he's looking at what people do at night (& here I declare a further interest , as I have to work nights one week eah month) , be it work , birdwatching , firework parties , drinking...

This is both very funny , & a confessional in some parts . I could identify with this a lot .

Read it - you will enjoy it ! (or I'll set the cat on you......)
