Phoebe Miller is a quiet shy, introverted young woman whose main interest is drawing. She isn't interested in home skills, nothing but drawing. She is a bit of a dreamer, but she is so shy, she doesn't share those dreams with anyone. At nearly eighteen, she knows that she needs to begin growing up, after all most girls her age have jobs, helping to bring money home to the family. An advertising brochure for a trip to Niagara Falls, catches her attention and that is all she can think of, how will...more
Mary Elis has written a moving story centred on family, faith, and the importance of having our priorities in life set straight. I unfortunately have not read prior books by the author where many of the characters were previously introduced. Because of that, I found it a bit difficult to keep all the characters straight at first. However, I can say that overall readers who enjoy Amish fiction will appreciate the drama that unfolds, the family tensions brought on by different views on faith issue...more
I really enjoyed my visit with old friends. The children from the earlier books are now growing up. Phoebe who lost her Mom at a young age, gained a new Mom in Hannah, when her Dad Seth remarried. She is now almost 18 and jumps at a chance to go to Niagara Falls on a chaperoned trip. Loved the antics that go on on this trip, and her relationship with Eli. Two similar personalities who have found each other. You will wonder if they will make a match.

This was the first time I think I have ever read a book by Mary Ellis. I really enjoyed the book. There was a lot crammed in one book. There were a lot of people to get to know, interlocking relationships to connect. And it necessarily covered a lot of territory (New York, Wisconsin, and their home state). But I still found it to be a good book with a lot of information and details. I find that I want to read more about this family and that I want to read more books written by Mary Ellis.

Very cautiously, I ventured into An Amish Family Reunion. Amish fiction is a genre that I struggle to enjoy, but this story sounded very appealing. Initially, it took me some time to get into this story and I found the dialogue somewhat lacking, but I eventually got used to that and the pacing of the story and really started to enjoy it.
I think I was most drawn to Phoebe because I have a lot in common with her, as far as her personality goes. When there is a book with a character I can really r...more

This is the first book that I’ve read by author Mary Ellis so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Amish stories can go both ways for me; I either love them or hate them. This one landed more towards love. Apparently if you’ve read her other books you would have already gotten to know the characters in this book a little more, but I didn’t know that going in to the story and it didn’t really affect my reading at all. I got to know all the characters pretty quickly and instantly was drawn in to...more
I think Mary Ellis is a great author. Her style of writing always takes me away from the moment and brings me to the actual setting of the book. i just love her character development, as well.
At first, when i started reading this book, I found it a bit hard to follow. That is just me. I find it hard when there are multiple characters and when you start flipping from one place to another. I usually like following one character/family.

This book is part of a series, which I did not know, but it can stand alone. However, be advised that there are a lot of characters and, if you haven't read the previous books, it might be a bit confusing at times. But, although that can be a little distracting, it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of this nicely written book.
There are many themes woven together like a fine quilt: marital problems due to lack of effective communication, loneliness, fear, jealousy, among others. But...more

Well done! Mary Ellis portrays An Amish Family Reunion with skill, humor, and affection.
Although I hadn't read the previous stories in this series, it wasn't necessary for me to understand the threads that were pulled together to make this reunion possible. The characters were varied and interesting and I was pulled in quickly.

This is one of those times where I wish there had been a disclaimer when the book was offered for review. Had I known it was part of a series (which I hadn't read) with many, many characters, I would have passed on reading it. I haven't read Mary Ellis before and I think that had I read the earlier books, I would have enjoyed this one. Characters from Mary's previous books come together in a family reunion and a young niece/granddaughter finds her own way. I believe this was written to stand alo...more
Family is woven all through out this story. A Mother missing her grown children. A Family reunion to bring them all together. Each person different but bound together by the thread of belonging to a family.

I'll admit, Amish fiction isn't a genre I read a lot, but I really enjoyed An Amish Family Reunion. Having not read the other books which told the other Millers' stories, you'd think I might get lost in all of the characters and their stories... but I didn't! There were a few times that I wondered about things, but not often!
One thing I loved was that Mary Ellis had a list of the characters in the beginning - I found this very helpful and I used it quite often.

As an accomplished author, Mary Ellis knows the ins and outs of writing a really good book. An Amish Family Reunion exemplifies this well.
Phoebe Miller is an artist at heart, and shy. She refuses to attend the singings, and such that are normal for Amish youth. With one exception. She manages to talk her father into a trip to Niagara Falls. On this trip, she meets Eli Riehl, a young Amish man who spins an exceptional story. This book brings back the family from Mary Ellis' previous books.
This is also the story of Phoebe and Eli. Phoebe convinces her parents to go on a trip to New York where she meets Eli. They decide to work on a children's book together, where he tells the story and she draws the pictures. There are many obstacles and as both are loners try to put a relationship together. I love how the library plays a part in this book.

I will definitely be reading many more of Mary Ellis' books in the future! I immensely enjoyed Ms. Ellis' latest tale of a large Amish family, following the many branches within the famiy tree.
Even though I haven't read the first three books in the series I was instantly able to figure out what was going on and easy follow along. I loved how it was like the book had 5 different storylines all going on at once, yet they all came beautifully together as the story progressed. I can only assume tha...more

"An Amish Family Reunion" by Mary Ellis was a delicious venture into Amish fiction. In the past, the only inspirational Amish fiction I have truly enjoyed was that of Beverly Lewis. When I saw the synopsis of "An Amish Family Reunion," I found it intriguing. It seemed unlike all the other familiar plots of the other Amish fiction books (which all seemed similar to me). I decided to give this one a chance, and I am very glad I did!

Phoebe Miller was five years old when her mother died. She withdrew and stopped talking. Her step mother, Hannah, lovingly brought her out of her silence. Even as a 17 year old, she still preferred to go off by herself and and do her favorite thing - sketch. She hardly went any activities in her community. But when her cousin, Henry, showed her a brochure for a trip to Niagara Falls something stirred in her and she knew she just had to go.

I was provided an e-book in exchange for my review through NetGalley. I am not required to give a positve review, just an honest one.
This book started out really hard for me. I think the main reason was because I have not read her other books. I had to struggle to remember who the characters were, and there were a lot of them. I think the author had to do this though because they were all being invited to a reunion and we get to see in their lives before they come to the reunion. The characters...more

If you enjoy stories about the Amish which I do this was one by an author I had not read before but truly enjoyed it. The Amish are always helping each other and think that is great as I wish we followed that idea. Like any other grandmother or parent they miss there children when they move away and a Family Reunion brings them back and we find some happy endings and wonderful surprises like finding love when we least expect it
I thought the story was great and plan to now try her other books.

It turns out this book is part of a series, although it was written in such a way that it can be read as a stand alone book. I was still perturbed when I realized this. I hate reading books out of order!! There was nothing on the books inside or outside cover to let you know this.
Anyhoo...another sweet Amish story that covers the trials and triumphs of an extended Amish family. I really like how the author laced biblical principles thoughout the story.

Finished this book last night and loved it! I loved how Phoebe and Eli met during a rumschpringe trip to Niagara Falls and something between them clicked when he found out she draws and he writes stories, so they soon team up to write stories and illustrations to see if they can do something to make money!

I greatly enjoyed reading An Amish Family Reunion and I would recommend this book by Mary Ellis. It was a little difficult getting into the story at first because I had not read the first three books (A Widow's Hope, Never Far From Home, and The Way To A Man's Heart by Mary Ellis) but thankfully Mary Ellis has a page with the cast of characters that tell who The Miller Family members are. Then once I got into the book I couldn't put it down.
We return to Winesburg, Ohio to see how th Miller and Kline families are doing. Two sisters married two brothers and they live close to one another. Julia is missing her family, one by one they have moved away and it troubles her to see her grown children struggle. So she declares a family reunion one summer to get everyone home.
