Huff & Puff
by
Claudia Rueda (Goodreads Author)
This interactive retelling of the Three Little Pigs story allows the reader to play the part of the big bad wolf. Three interior die-cut holes invite readers to huff, puff, and blow the pigs’ houses down! This fractured fairy tale ends sweetly when, rather than blowing down the third pig’s brick home, the wolf/reader blows out the candles on a cake baked by the pigs! A sat...more

1. Genre: Traditional Literature
2. Summary: This book tells the story of the three little pigs through simple text, illustration, and the ability to make it interactive through the storytelling. The same story that we all remember as children is told, with a happy ending where the wolf blows the candles out on a cake and they all share it and “live happily ever after”.
3. Critique:

In this particular tale Rueda sticks just with The Three Little Pigs. But oh what great pigs they are! They look so cute! I think they would be very fun plush toys to snuggle. I can't wait to try this one in my preschool story time. Anyway, back to the book. The main charmer about this one is that there are small holes in a few of the pages and "you" are the wolf that has to blow through the hole to try and "huff & puff" to blow down the houses. With a fun twist at the end that is totally op...more
I think this will be great to use in both Toddler and Preschool storytime. It uses a classic tale and makes it fun, funny, and participatory. I can't wait to try it out with a group of kiddos!
My main reason for not giving it more stars is that I felt the die cut holes took away from the book design as a whole. I understand that they give a little more oomph to the huffing and puffing experience, and I enjoyed them through first pig and second pig. However, I really disliked that on a couple of t...more

My Review: We all have read the story of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf as a child. But author Claudia Rueda decided to put a new twist on the story allowing the reader to play the part of the big bad wolf. The funny thing about this story is that when the wolf blew down the houses of the first and second pigs, they had a bowl, two eggs and a mixing spoon. The last house had all three pigs with a cake and 3 candles in it.

Everyone knows the story of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf. In Claudia Rueda’s new picture book, Huff & Puff: Can You Blow Down the Houses of the Three Little Pigs, this classic childhood story gets a new twist. With simple texts and sketch illustrations, Huff & Puff is a great way to introduce your toddlers to this classic tale. Rueda does add her own spin though. The reader is the wolf! That’s right. After each pig is introduced there is a cut out in the book with the text...more

In an ingeniously simple retelling of "The Three Little Pigs," Claudia Rueda makes the story interactive for readers.
What I thought: I think Tullet's Press Here has started a trend. Interactive picture books are becoming quite prevalent. I really like her take on "The Three Little Pigs." I would have loved to have had this book when I did a fractured fairy tales program during the summer reading program this year. I'll be adding Huff & Puff to my "Three Little Pigs" book list. I really wanted to love this book, since Let's Play in the Forest... While the Wolf is Not Around is an absolutely perfect story time book. But those die-cut holes are so distracting, especially at the end of the book when you can see the text from the previous spread. I just can't bring myself to share this with emerging readers, because it would really distract from the "real" text. Just bad book design, I guess.
Simple, simple retelling of 3 Little Pigs. The "Huff & puff" pages encourage reader interaction, which makes this fun for storytimes, but there's a weird printing issue where the hole on the puff pages then lines up to show word fragments when the page is turned. Distracting to see "Third pig is happy" and a little "ffing" showing through from the previous page. Hm.
This is fairly classic telling of the three little pigs. It uses pictures to tell most of the story, with only a simple sentence on each page. Children will probably enjoy filling in the details for you. The ending has a happy twist, and you never see the scary wolf. You could probably read this to a Pre-K audience. Very cute illustrations!
This just screams to be read in Toddler Storytime. We always try to get the kids to be the wolf with the huffing and puffing. This one intends the reader to be the wolf and has a light, happy ending perfect for toddlers. So fun. In a lap-read or read-alone, the reader may also pick up on the subtle hints on each page of what is coming in the end.

Just did this in storytime for the first time. I preceded it with a felt board of the three little pigs, which got the kids ready for some serious huffing and puffing. We had a good time with this story.
A very fun retelling of this story. Would be great fun for young kids. Would also be a fun book to use for minilesson work with older kids.
Fun take on the Three Little Pigs. I could really see doing this one as preschool read aloud with lots of help from them.
