To be honest with you, I wasn't that keen to read Cinnamon Rain, a new Aussie YA title from debut author Emma Cameron. For starters, I found the title "Cinnamon Rain" perplexing as it doesn't really conjure up anything particularly visually and/or emotionally impressive (or even familiar) in terms of poetic vernacular for myself. Cinnamon Rain… what the heck… is that?
Secondly, the blurb describes it as about a boy trying to stay out of trouble at school. With a friend who has an abusive stepdad....more

If I were to list all the issues that Cinnamon Rain touches upon, you could be forgiven for thinking this book is heavier than a box of hammers.
So I’m not going to, because it isn’t. And I think that it would be doing this book a great disservice, if it were to be passed over on basis of a misconception about its content. Because rather than being just another book about [insert topical teen issue here], Cinnamon Rain is one of the most insightful and hopeful young adult novels I’ve read this ye...more

Cinnamon Rain by Emma Cameron is set in a small town in Australia. Luke, Bongo and Casey attend high school together. Luke and Bongo have been best mates since they were kids and Luke has been in love with Casey since she came to their school a few years earlier. While Luke, Bongo and some of their other school friends will hang out after school or on weekends, Casey never joins them. Luke learns that Casey's dad is mean and controlling and she is hardly ever allowed to leave the house. Bongo do...more

I was a bit dubious about reading Cinnamon Rain. Mainly because it centres around a love triangle and I’m very tired of those. But thankfully, Cinnamon Rain has a few things going for it that make it very different from your standard YA love triangle fare:
-It’s a verse novel.
-There’s no insta-love. Far from it – these characters have known each other for years.
-It’s told from the perspectives of all three characters.
-These aren’t your average heroes and heroines. They screw up, act out...more

Out of This Place, known and published originally as Cinnamon Rain in Australia is a novel I've been wanting to read for a long time. Whenever I'd saved enough money to indulge in an Aussie book, invariably, some other novel would rise up the list before this one and I'd tell myself that I'd buy it - next time. Thus, when it came up on NetGalley, like a starved child I lunged for it, fervently hoping I'd be accepted. You can imagine my surprise, though, when I opened it to find...more

Because this book was in verse, I took the liberty of trudging along the road less traveled and write the review in verse as well. Hope you like it. Even if you don't, remeber it's my first try people!
And no, it's not a way to get out of writing a proper review. :)

Really enjoyed Emma Cameron's debut novel and looking forward to reading more of her books!
Luke starts telling us a story. About his best mate Bongo, and Casey. Casey, whose every shrug of indifference melts his heart closer to hers. If only she'd let him. But she won't let him, or anyone. When Luke asks what she's doing during the holidays, she doesn't know. She never knows. All he knows is that her Dad treats her worse than the family dog, and that he'd love the chance to hang with her. If her Dad would let her off the chain, which he won't.
Then there's Bongo. And his step-Dad, who...more

Out of This Place is a verse novel with three main characters. Luke, Casey, and Bongo are friends, with Luke and Bongo both sweet on Casey. Yes, there’s a love triangle, but it doesn't appear trite in the least bit.
The story follows the struggles of all three characters. I found Casey and Bongo more compelling than Luke. Casey has a strict father and ventures off to live her own life. Bongo has it worst of all, with an abusive stepfather, mother in rehab, and brother whose foster parents won’t a...more

I received this book compliments of the publisher though NetGalley, and I appreciate the opportunity to read it ahead of its publication.
This book was okay. I enjoyed slowly discovering what was going on in each of the characters' lives, and I found the slowly developing love triangle to be fascinating. I thought the characters' personalities were developed in an interesting manner, particularly because it switches between three different points of view. It was a quick read, and I got to see a...more

Cinnamon Rain is a must read.
It should be read by millions.
An outstanding contemporary.
I ordered this off the internet and had no idea it was a verse novel until i opened up the book. I was intrigued. I had never read a verse novel. It took me a bit to get use to this new style, but once i did, i was hooked. Once i started reading i could not stop and devoured it in one sitting. Don't let the fact that this is a verse novel stop you from reading this because it is an amazing book.

A verse novel for young adults told from the perspective of three friends, this story is revealed in different ways and along a progressive timeline from these three prospectives. The full details are not revealed until the final telling, with each account overlapping in parts but extending beyond the previous story. Consequently assumptions are made and then dispelled giving interesting insight into the characters: how they view their story and each of their parts in it.

I am so happy to be able to give Cinnamon Rain its first five star review. I hope there'll be many more. It deserves it. I read it to the very last drop, and enjoyed it all. It's rounded out so well. There were so many times in it that Emma Cameron perfectly nailed emotions. There was no clunkiness, no repetition, no purple prose. It's such a hard thing to put all that together, and make it seem so natural and effortless. I didn't get the feeling that there was a writer manipulating me; it felt...more

Luke has an average life: good parents, good grades, and good friends. He knows he has it better than some of his friends like Casey and Bongo, but he longs for more. He's in love with Casey, and hopes one day she'll return his feelings. He does everything he can to get closer to her, but one day, she tells him she wants out of this place with no reminders of her past. What else can he do but try to build a life and move on. He applies for a welfare traineeship and moves away leaving Casey and B...more
Hmm..I'm not sure why it's only letting me choose Audio CD as my format but I read this in ebook format on my Nook after receiving a copy via NetGalley.
It did take me a little while to get into this story, I'm not gonna lie. The story itself was good but I never really got attached to the characters. I was interested in the story but never really got too invested. I did like how it switched between three of the main characters, Luke, Casey and Bongo/David. It has been a long time since I’ve read a book written in verse.
I forgot how beautiful and elegant they are. So simple, yet so dynamic. Expertly crafted to convey the most emotion in so little. Especially in the case for Out of This Place, I couldn’t peel my eyes from my kindle.
I started reading around noon on a beautiful, sunny day. I could have been swimming, but instead I was perched on the swing outside, getting sunburned because I refused to stop reading. I finished the same day and immedia...more

I tend to like contemporary YA novels written by Australian authors so whenever an opportunity comes up to read a new one I will take it. Out of This Place by Emma Cameron is a beautifully written verse novel that originated in Australia under the title Cinnamon Rain. It is a good story and a powerful one that I enjoyed with some reservations.

Emma Cameron's Cinnamon Rain embodies the Trifecta of Awesome in my reading heart: a contemporary older YA, Novel in Verse, from Australia.
Fortunately, after a long (very, very long) wait for my order of this book from Fishpond, the Trifecta of Awesome didn't disappoint--Cinnamon Rain is one of my stand out reads of the year.

Out of this Place is the first free verse YA novel that I’ve read. It was clever of the author to use verse, as it means the author was very careful with her word choice, and the words were meant for maximum impact. It was really easy to read, and I felt fully engaged.

Cinnamon Rain is one of those stories which surprise you, but not necessarily in a good way.
It started off as a romance and a normal teenage fiction, where everybody’s trying to work out what to do in the future. But then it turned into something a little tasteless and slightly annoying as to the characters and their reactions.
I liked how the story was told in verses, and I think that’s the only aspect I truly appreciated. Everything else seemed pointless, especially when we had stories of all t...more

This book was different. I've never read something like it. Sentences were very short and snip. But, the book was great. I'm glad I read it. It short that I read it in 5hrs. The characters though are so great. A typical high school story. I really liked how the book was divided into the three main characters Luke,David, and Casey. It was really easy to follow each character and there story bc of the division. Definitely a great book will be recommending it to a lot of people :)

Before everything, I've read that the original title of this book is Cinnamon Rain. I actually prefer that one because it sounds silly even though I have no idea what a Cinnamon Rain is, although it was mentioned once in the book.
It took me a while to get into this book, it was probably about Casey's part that I started to like this one. I was really fascinated at reading about Luke's, Casey's, and Bongo's life; of how they chose their destinies and rise from poverty. Especially Bongo, when it c...more

I live on the NSW South Coast, delight in standing barefoot on floorboards warmed by sunlight, believe that cooking for others is a privilege and wish humans could grow more than one set of teeth. My favourite childhood haunt was the school library and I later worked in some so I could be home for my two children outside of school time. Once they were older, I worked in other places and it was not...more
