I liked this about the same as Onyx. It had more romance, and an even sweeter and more dreamy Daemon, but less action. So it evens out in the end. The only action was the two escape attempts, which dont add up to many pages.

But I really appreciate all the romance, and the focus on Katy and Daemon's bond. The reaffirmation of their relationship. We need that assurance that they can get through what faces them next. I am still a bit worried about their fate, but not sad. All the fuss over the endi...more

I have never been so excited about any book as I had been about Opal. Since Lux series are my absolutely most favourite YA paranormal series, I just could not wait to read it. Opal starts exactly where previous book ended. Luxens are shaken after all that happened and no one is the same as before. Beginning was kind of slow paced but when I was 30% in, story got very exciting and I could not stop reading. Opal contains two main topics, which are developed throughout the whole book. First one is depression after what happened and all dangerous problems that all characters had to face in this book. Second topic is love and relationship between Katy and Daemon which was very realistic and affectionate. It was all perfectly balanced and it only confirmed how excellent writer Jennifer L. Armentrout is.

One of the many things that I like the most about this series is the fact that even though this is YA genre, it all feels very mature because of the topics and problems characters are dealing with and the way they are dealing them with. I always loved dynamics between Katy and Daemon and now, when they added love and sexy times to it, their banter and interactions got even better. They really are one of my TOP favourite fictional couples. Daemon was still infuriating and his ego knows no boundaries and is super-huge, but we finally got to see his sensitive side too. He was just wonderful! If you haven't read Lux series yet, go and read in now!

And the ending!!! OMG, OMG, OMG... I did not know what to do, whether to scream or to cry... All I knew was that my heart was racing like crazy during last couple of pages. This was seriously one of the worst cliffhangers ever written!!!

Mitch is never going to let me live this down, but I am DEVASTATED because I just did not like this book as much as the first two.

Let's face it, Obsidian was SO great because of one thing, and one thing only - Daemon Black. And I was one of Armentrout's biggest fans, on a campaign to get all of my friends to read the book and see the light. And in Onyx, Daemon wasn't quite as swoon-worthy, and Katy was an annoying whiny brat, but I thought the storyline was much more developed. Let's face it, Obsidian was SO great because of one thing, and one thing only - Daemon Black. And in Onyx, Daemon wasn't quite as swoon-worthy, and Katy was an annoying whiny brat, but I thought the storyline was much more developed. Sadly, Opal lacked both. While I still liked this book, I just didn't get the same experience while reading it.

First of all, I have mixed feelings about Daemon's and Katy's relationship. On one hand, I'm glad to see they have progressed rather well and that it was possible for them to have the sweet connection, which is the ideal, dreamy wish of every girl. However, I miss that spark between them - the childish "I like you so I'm going to infuriate you" type of bickering that made the dialogue so great. No, I don't condone drama, but some of Armentrout's best lines were in those scenes.

The characters just were not the same in this book. Like I said, Daemon is sweet, and I would so fall in love with him for that if he had been that way all along. But his lines and cockiness just do not strike me the same way as they used to. And I understand that he's looking out for Katy, but when did he get so possessive and overprotective?

And Katy? What happened to the spunky, no-nonsense girl I loved so much in Obsidian? I understand she has been through a lot, but my goodness, the girl cries over everything! When Daemon tell her she's beautiful, when her mother tells her Daemon is a good boy and just about every other slightly emotional occurrence. She mentions being a crybaby near the end, but I wanted to roll my eyes all along.

And it wasn't just our star couple. Dawson was an ass, not the nice brother we met in Shadows. Dee was a bitch, not the bubbly, friendly girl we met all along. Andrew and Ash were almost nice, and I think Armentrout tried TOO hard to make Blake a shady, creepy person. Like I said, I know a lot has happened, causing our characters to have a lapse in their usual self, but still...

But the reason why I liked Onyx, even though the characters had started changing, was because of the storyline. Daemon and Katy had to figure out what was happening between them (not relationship wise, but about what happened near the end of book 1), and they discover there is more to the war against the Arum and to the DOD than they can ever begin to imagine.

In Opal, nothing really happened. I mean, yes, Dawson reappears and tries to get Beth back. And Blake comes back, and the group has to figure out if they can trust him or not. And they learn about a new gemstone and its powers. But that's about it. I didn't feel there was much of a storyline, nor did the characters really get much further in their "journey."

By the way, the end wasn't so bad, maybe because I was kind of prepared for it, but I wasn't like, "OMG, I have to have the next book now." Or maybe it was because that scene was the most exciting/eventful part of the book?

For me, I liked this book because I'm a fan of the series, and I really want to know what happens with our characters. However, they just weren't the same people, and as far as the plot goes, this really felt like the "middle book" that just stretches the story between the real action. I just wish I finished this book feeling more ... I don't know... satisfied.(less)

With Opal we have ups and down, but for the vast majority of the novel, it is one big up. This book is everything I enjoyed about the previous instalments, amplified. There is sweltering romance, a somewhat asshole-ish alien next door, an enthusiastic book-blogger, and, best of all, entertainment. Armentrout recaps seamlessly enough to ensure there is no leaving the reader behind (thank you!) and doesn’t hesitate to take the story several steps further. With the prime focus being on Katy and the gang infiltrating the government group Daedalus – an under-the-radar organisation responsible for the torture of mutated human hybrids – there is a lingering tension and sense of foreboding that builds throughout the book. Plot-wise, the progression is appreciable but not overly complicated. Action is limited until the climax, but, for this book, it worked. I was happy to take the substitute – namely, Daemon and Katy scenes.

I think it’s time for a Daemon Black paragraph. Anyone who has met him will know he is too cocky for his own good…. But, let’s all admit it, arrogance looks good on him. I know I can’t get enough of his smart-assery (it’s a word) and the constant banter between him and Katy. In fact, the playful relationship they have is one of my favourite aspects of this whole series. Onyx gave us a fleeting and precious glance into the personality beneath the sarcasm and over-confident grin, and Opal pushes that into full momentum. Believe it or not, Daemon Black is a true darling. The change in him is surprising but welcomed, with moments of maddening teasing giving way to genuine sweetness. Though, for those of you who have a preference for Daemon number one, be reassured that he is not gone. Opal is not deprived of witty, swaggering comments from our favourite Luxen, and I am confident that this characteristic quality will never disappear.

Describing Katy in this book is a little more complicated. Her frustrating tendencies were fewer and far between here than in Onyx, but, at times, I failed to distinguish her from the sea of other protagonists floating around in my head. When with Daemon, it is easy to do so, but, when alone, it was a challenge. Nevertheless, I have always liked her and that much remained the same in this instalment. She constantly refuses to let Daemon have his way and is never slow to throw back a snarky response – which proves to be both admirable and entertaining. Together, these two nearly set my kindle on fire (and quite possibly me, too). There are quite a few sizzling scenes to keep us satisfied…

The ending, surprisingly, did not bother me at all. Here I was foreseeing an excruciating cliff-hanger with dead bodies, fried aliens and a Katy-Daemon break-up. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I have experienced lately (yes, Unspoken, I am looking at you) and I know I need not worry about what will happen next. Though, having said that, I would like to have Origin in my hands as soon as possible, please. Any time yesterday would be nice.

I... just... I literally have no words to describe the incredible epicness of this book. As everyone knows Jennifer L Armentrout is my favourite author of all time. I have read all of her books multiple times and I have to say this is the best one I have ever read in my life. Jennifer's writing style is just amazing. She is the just the most phenomenally talented author I have ever come across and I never get tired of her books. I could easily get rid of all of my books and only keep Jennifer's and just read them over and over again forever and never ever get bored. They are THAT good. So if you haven't read any of Jennifer's books stop reading right now and go and read them... RIGHT NOW! I demand it! You have not lived if you haven't read a JLA books. GO! GO! GO! Katy is so awesome in this book. We get to see Katy being kick-ass with her awesome alien mojo. I loved it and I loved her. I felt like we really saw Katy grow a lot in Opal. She has grown so much already from the beginning of Obsidian to now and I feel like she grows even more in this book. She goes from the Katy trying to sort everything out herself to accepting help from Daemon and growing into a stronger, wiser Katy than any of us could have ever imagined.

Daemon... Oh... My... Daemon. He is just... *melts* In Obsidian we had Jerk Daemon... in Onyx we had cheeky swoon-worthy Daemon... Prepare yourself... for... Romantic Daemon! Oh yes guys I just said that. Daemon goes all romantic and he melted my insides into goo. I just squealed... and swooned... and squealed... and swooned... and *melt*

Opal is without a doubt the best of the series so far... the best Jennifer L Armentrout book of all time... and the best book I have ever read in my entire life. It was just... incredible... amazing... phenomenal... epic... No words I can ever say can actually live up to this book. It just completely blew me away.

Prepare for your insides to turn to goo... to squeal and happy dance and fall head over heels in love with Daemon... you think your in love with him before Opal? Oh you have seen nothing yet... you will love him more than you ever thought possible in Opal. I so need to find me a Daemon. While reading Opal bring tissues because you will cry more than you ever thought was possible. Jennifer definitely knows how to break your heart into a million pieces and then piece it back together just to break it again. But in a good way! Opal is heart-shattering, eye-watering and breathtaking. This is a must-read and one you will read over and over again and never get bored of it. Go read this series NOW! You will not be disappointed and you can thank me later... after the tears have dried and you are once again feeling again.

I'm just gonna write out some passages and my corresponding notes because I apparently have lost all ability to write reviews. I read it on my Kindle for PC so I don't have page numbers for the quotes. Also it's probably not going to be very funny because my brain is fried and I'm just having a generally sucky week. Spoilers, almost definitely.

5 stars. Oh boy, I loved this book so much as I expected. Armentrout is doing a great job. I just love the characters so much. Especially Daemon. Oh my bad, bad boy. I'm totally in love with him. *giggles* He was so badass, so cocky and so adorable as usual. Whenever he called Katy "kitten", I couldn't stop giggling like an idiot.

There is a reason the Lux Series is my favorite series, and it is because each book just gets better and better. The plot continues to expand and you just never know who to trust. Jennifer L. Armentrout has created a world that it is so easy to get lost in. I tried to savor this book and make it last, but I just couldn’t. There is a reason the Lux Series is my favorite series, and it is because each book just gets better and better. The plot continues to expand and you just never know who to trust. Jennifer L. Armentrout has created a world that it is so easy to get lost in. I tried to savor this book and make it last, but I just couldn’t. I devoured it and the other book I was reading was immediately put on hold.

Our main gal Katy is such a great heroine. I love her attitude, personality, snark, and her strength. Also, we cannot forget that she is a book nerd and I really do love that she is a blogger. I know some people don’t like this, but I personally love it. My favorite thing about Katy is that it is always clear why she makes the choices she makes. I never have that moment where I’m ready to smack the heroine because she is making a clearly dumb decision. Even if I don’t agree with the decision, I always understand where she is coming from.

Daemon Black is my all-time favorite book boyfriend. I absolutely love his infuriating personality. If you thought you loved Daemon after Onyx, well just wait, he somehow got even better in Opal which just proves that miracles do happen. There were so many moments where I just wanted to melt into a puddle of goo. My heart, on numerous occasions, melted into that stuff inside gushers. I really enjoyed getting to see Daemon’s sweet and romantic side. However, his egotistical and sarcastic personality was still there. I really liked that he was still his jerk-face self most of the time.

Opal was great because we finally get to see Daemon and Katy together as a couple. I enjoyed watching Daemon chase Katy in Onyx, but I absolutely adored watching them as a couple in Opal. They really are stronger together and luckily the angst between the two is limited in a pretty much nonexistent way. The two of them have some incredibly sweet moments that I just don’t have words for. However, they still argue a lot because they are Daemon and Katy and that is what they do. I really loved that they still argued because it is their “thing.” It would not have made sense for them to all of a sudden get along all the time simply because they are a couple.

Moving on to Dee. I really missed the old Dee with her vivacious lively personality in this book. Actually, I was very upset with her for a lot of the book. I understand that she is grieving and my heart breaks for her, but I disagreed with her blaming Katy for it. Maybe I just get defensive when it comes to Katy, but I felt like she was putting blame in the wrong place, because in the end it was her and Adam's choice to go into that house. Yes, other events led to that moment and maybe it wouldn’t have been necessary to go in had Katy acted differently, but the last and final choice was on them. Part of me felt as if Dee was trying to ignore this fact and not blame herself.

So can you tell I loved this book? Opal was just an amazing ride from beginning to end. Like I said before, I tried to make this book last, but I couldn’t. Once I started reading, I simply could not stop. I needed to know what was going to happen! And – oh my – there are just so many twists and turns along the way. It is so hard to know who to trust and there is just so much that could go wrong. I honestly didn’t see any of the events coming. Not because they were particularly hard to guess, because looking back I’m all “damn I should have seem that coming”, but because as I was reading I was so absorbed in the story that I just didn’t have time to speculate. I didn’t want to pause long enough to try and guess the outcome. Then you get to then ending and you feel as if your heart has been ripped out of your chest, stomped on, put through a grinder, gnawed on by a zombie, and then stuffed back in your chest. I mean this in a good way of course. The ending is so emotional and it leaves you breathless and desperate for more pages. It is an evil evil cliffhanger. If you thought Deity was bad, well then HAHAHAHA.

All in all, Opal is a great addition to my favorite series. I have still yet to be disappointed by any JLA book.(less)

Why? Because Cliffhang rumor, that's why.

Really, NO ONE has seen the guy behind the guys in the cover? REALLY?
He looks like he wants to EAT them! As if they were something delicious to EAT!

WHO is he? & WHY is he looking at Katy & Daemon? (to Kill 'em?)

Is he Dawson? Or the creepy-crazy Doctor? If Dawson, well, that's a shame. *gasp* Or is it THAT twin brother (the one who, uh, survived)??

Before I do this I would like to make a quick statement to my friends who have not read this ABSOFRAKKINLUTELY AWESOME book yet:

Some of you seem to be afraid of the cliffhanger. And it is a bit brutal after the blinding joy of like 90% of the book, BUT I won't find the wait any harder than the ones we've already had in this series. This is a series centered on one couple.
