Another amazing story about WWII and the men and women who lived it. This one set in the Philippines and the Pacific Theater. A story of courage and survival woven among the natives, the missionaries, the guerrillas and the US Navy. I need to talk with (Uncle) Jerry Burke again about the role of submarines in the Pacific since he was there.

A true story.

To quote from the cover:

40 Trapped in the Phillppines in WWII;

A Set of Secret Japanese Battle Plans

And the Submarine that saved them.

Most of the Americans were Protestant missionaries. I never know about the reach of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. They blanketed the earth in the 20th century.

Enjoyable 'micro-history.' Follows the story of several different groups of Americans trapped on Negros Island, The Philippines, when Japan invades. Interesting story of how they hid from the Japanese and escaped via submarine, along with a captured set of Japanese war plans.

The rescue of civilians and military in the Philippines makes for an interesting read. Most books neglect to show the bribery, treachery, and treason of which a subdued citizenry is capable. This book is not among them.

Well researched, but the story did not give a feel for what the Americans were feeling and suffering. Full of facts. Then the last part went beyond the title-subject to narrate the end of the war in the Pacific.
