Overall, I didn't really like this collection. It doesn't really live up to the premise of the collection being a "horror" collection in my humble opinion. Some stories just feel like off-color odds and ends that wouldn't fit into an author's other anthologies. Others were just bad. There were a few good stories here, though not all of them were "horror" in my understanding of the genre.

My favorites from this set include:

"Coming to Grief" by Clive Barker ***
"Food" by Thomas Tessier ****

My top 3:

Having a woman for lunch-snappy, sick little twist at the end

Coming to Grief: A longer story that I just loved.

Orange is for Anguish, Blue is for Insanity: LOVED this story! I kind of had an idea where the story was going but I loved it all the same!

The rest were ok...usually I love Stephen King's stuff, but The Night Flyer has never been one of my favorites.

Side note: I thought the intro was VERY interesting and well worth a read!

Winter's chosen collections of "horror fiction" generally sucked. Most of the stories were not scary at all. Although, in general, the stories are bad there were three stories that I liked that could have been interpreted as mental illness.

The mental illnesses in these horror stories were a woman with suicidal depression during a grieving period, a painter with obsessive thoughts and possible hallucination, and would-be writer who has paranoid delusional ideas.

I had this book when I was in junior high. I don't remember much except that I really, really liked "Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity". I don't recall the story (I think it had something to do with Vincent Van Gogh?) but reading the title is filling me with the creeps. My lizard brain must remember something at least mildly terrifying. I should dig it out and re-read it. Hope it doesn't disappoint!

Ahhhh....October. The perfect time for a good chilling tale (or thirteen!).
I was familiar with some of the authors (King, Barker, Straub) but many were new to me.
I particularly enjoyed the tales of Morrell ("Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity"), Ligotti ("Alice's Last Adventure"), and Cady ("By Reason of Darkness") and will definitely be looking to read more by them!

There was some really good stuff and some other stuff I wasn't sure why it was here, because it seemed mostly fantasy.

However, stories by King, Etchison, Barker, Morrell, and Straub raised the level very high. Overall very good.

I almost gave it one, but two stories made the reading experience worthwhile. Apart from Orange for Anguish, Blue is for Insanity and the last story, the others seem flat and sterile. Half the time I yawned and rolled my eyes.

Interesting collection of short stories

Gave up on this one. Dreary and boring tales.

With the exception of the Stephen King story ("The Night Flier"), which I've read in another of his collections, I cannot remember any of these stories... And I know I've read the book at least several times. Maybe it's time to read it again!

An anthology of mostly forgettable horror shorts...except for David Morrell's "Orange is for Anguish; Blue is for Insanity," which is a classic and sticks with me 20 years after reading it.

Great classic horror. Some terrific stories by the original horror masters. Inspirational and sickening. Give this a read on a rainy day.

A great collection, including the short story "Orange is for Anguish, Blue is for Insanity," by David Morrell.
