Kay Warren has written a wonderful book about how we can choose joy, even in the most difficult circumstances. The book is well written, and easy to relate to. I normally get rid of books once I've read them, but this one is going to stay on my shelf as reference; one that I'll go back to again, and again. Kay Warren's writing is so full of Biblical truth, wisdom, and insight, and definitely worth revisiting. On the inside flap of the book, it says, "Joy is deeper than happiness, lasts longer th...more
There are some good points in this book, but I would not recommend it to a friend. I am only two stars because nothing stirs my blood quicker than a verse being used to prove a point that goes directly against the context of the passage in scripture. (ie. she uses 3 passages to illustrate Christ is "hilariously funny", "a riot", with "great, edgy humor"; yet two of the three scenes she chose are extremely serious, the most obvious being Mt 23:24 "straining a gnat, swallowing a camel", the surro...more
In the last two weeks, I've been trying to dive into Kay Warren's newest book - Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn't Enough.
Warren's writing style is warm and inviting.
But I soon learned that it's not a book that I can "speed read."
Instead, like a treat you want to savor and digest slowly, this book takes time to unpack.
Lots of time.
I'm still not finished reading it.
I love how the each chapter has questions that make you think - so you can really apply the topic to your life.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The very first page of “Choose Joy” caught my attention because the author and I seem to have a lot in common. First of all, like Kay Warren, I don’t always have it all together. And even though my name is Joy, the joy Kay is talking about doesn’t always come easily to me, and one reason is, I’ve struggled with depression as well for a long time. Therefore this book captured my interest and kept it until the last page, because I really wanted to see just what Kay Warren h...more

Joy is a choice and available to everyone.
The book is divided into four main parts with many subchapters. Within this volume are many points addressed and explained in a way that is down to earth without being intimidating. Topics addressed include getting to know Jesus on a more personal level, how to discover a new way of thinking, nurturing joy in others, strengths and weaknesses just to name a few. Chapters are enhanced with bible verses which adds depth to the points being addressed. After...more

This is such an encouraging audiobook and so easy to listen to that I finished it within a couple days of downloading it. Kay Warren narrates herself and comes across like a very good friend who empathises with you all the way through..She also helps you sort out your problems and doesn't just tell you to pretend that bad things aren't happening in your life. She has experienced a lot of pain and fear herself so is speaking from personal experience. She is very honest about her fears which reall...more

CHOOSE JOY by Kay Warren
Joy (as defined by Warren): Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things (30).
She says that joy and sorrow run “inseparably throughout our days” down a “set of parallel train tracks” (27).
“God is the only true source of joy” (95).

I really enjoyed this book! Kay made it so clear how we can experience genuine joy in our lives regardless of our circumstances. Life is like a parallel set of train tracks, while sorrow and joy run side by side throughout our lives. However, when you step back and look from a distance, the two tracks appear as one. What a revelation to learn how to respond to life's trials with a joyful attitude, even while experiencing grief or frustration within a given situation. Trials reveal what is deep i...more
Kay Warren in her new book, “Choose Joy” published by Revell suggests that we Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn’t Enough.
From the inside flap: Everyone knows how to be joyful in the peaks of life.
I’ve graduated!
I’m engaged!
I’ve been hired!
I’m having a baby!
I’m cancer-free!
When all your fondest hopes and wildest dreams come true, and your heart nearly explodes with happiness, it’s easy to feel joyful.
But what about the valleys? When nothing seems to go your way? When everything is falling apart?...more

The author/narrator's voice was clear and concise, with just the right inflection where it was needed. I found myself getting so emotionally involved with Mrs. Warren's story, especially when she spoke of the difficulties she and her family have faced, that it brought tears to my eyes more then once. To know that she has suffered, as I and many others have suffered, and are still suffering today, and to be able to see and feel the joy that only God can offer, is very encouraging.

great book. Really got me thinking about my perspective on certain issues and situations, how I handle things, etc.
One of the best things I took away was a new understanding about changing your attitude. You can't force yourself to FEEL a certain way- but you can choose to ACT a certain way. By doing that, your feelings and attitude generally change for the better. Most people think the process is reversed-telling yourself that you should feel a certain way makes it so and then the actions/beha...more

Kay Warren writes with beautiful honesty. I have highlighted so much throughout these pages, and this paragraph brought a realization to me that I can't wait for everything in life to be perfect before I decide to be joyful: "Yet sometimes moments are all we have. You and I can decide that we have this moment, and we will choose to love it. We're not denying that we have problems. We're not saying our lives are wrapped neatly with a bow on top and we have everything figured out. It just means th...more
I enjoyed this book. A problem that I used to have (fairly often) with the church's approach of stress being a sign of weakness in your relationship with Christ or that you aren't trusting Him enough is that I have issues with anxiety problems. I didn't like the stigma that struggling with anxiety/ocd/etc. have in the church and felt as though what I went through was passed off as a lack of trust in Jesus.

Scripturally weak and man-centered. Joy should come from our relationship with Christ because of what he did on the cross to fix our relationship with God and others. We can forgive and hope because of him. She does not mention that the Holy Spirit is the one to grow the "fruit" of joy in us. This book did not at all help me be more joyful. I suppose it could be helpful for someone who doesn't already know that happiness isn't lasting and joy isn't about circumstances...

I believe this book must be read using the proper study bible. Many scripture references are taken frome "the message" which I do NOT believe is anywhere never the category of the bible. So if you're willing to discern with the "catch" phrases and KNOW your bible, go ahead and read. Some things I felt she's got it but others I think are down right false. Not a fan if this book!!!!
This book reminds me that I have a choice to be joyful or not, in spite of circumstances. It takes me to the same place of sobering reality as "One Thousand Gifts" in that I realize I'm not a joyful, joy-filled person but that's who God made me to be. Each page was good; lots of personal insight from Kay Warren and lots of good, practical suggestions, not just religious fluff.
This was an awesome book. Just finished a 4 week bible study at our church and
had the opportunity to see the DVD that goes with the bible study.
This is a book that everyone should read. We can have joy in everything. We must
find the bless in the mess.
Thank you Kay Warren for writing this amazing book.
