Colton has been pining for Sebastian since he was a teenager. He was never able to act upon his feelings because Sebastian never showed interest in return. But when Sebastian is given the task of protecting the royal family on Regelance he and Colton begin to spend more time together. This causes rumors among the ton about the two being lovers. Well written, well edited, well-drawn characters- I liked it. It was fun and enjoyable.

It ended like the Harlequin Romance it emulates. I rate well-written Harlequins at 3 stars.

For more stars- something remarkable has to happen and the relationship of the MC's needs to be poignant and vibrant. This story didn't reach this additional level for me. {shrug}

To be honest this is a three and a half star book, but as I am an unabashed fan of the author I bumped it up.
I absolutely loved the first two books in this series, and while I like this book it didn't grab me like the other two did. There are a few reasons for that.
The first being that book semed forced, or rushed. It felt like (on this side of the page) that J.L didn't enjoy herself as much. There was also the feeling that she didn't like Sebastian as she clearly loves Simon Hollister and Nate....more

More of the same in the Sci-Regency series

PROS:
- I love the world that Langley has created with this Sci-Regency series: the books combine the social propriety of the Regency era with a total lack of censure toward homosexuality.
- The previous stories in the series have been along the lines of, “Oh no! Our precious prince has fallen in with a rascal! We must keep them apart! … Well, crud. Too late. Let’s get them married.” I liked that the romance in this one takes place with the king’s full knowledge--and even at his prodding.
- The appearance of characters from the earlier books is always a welcome addition to serial stories. I also enjoyed seeing the king and his consort fleshed out a bit more in this one.
- The electronic butlers in these stories amuse me. This one is particularly fun since the butler at the castle and the butler at Colton’s new home with Sebastian sometimes communicate with each other.

CONS:
- I get tired of the princes in these books being such toots. They never listen to people, they don’t follow the rules, they get themselves into scrapes because they’re foolish, etc. I understand that this creates drama, but my capacity for finding their hijinks endearing has about dried up.
- Even having read the earlier books in the series, I had a bit of trouble keeping up with the large number of characters and all of their various names. There are scenes in which characters’ names are being thrown around in dialogue one after another, and it seems like just about every man has at least 3 identifiers: his first name (John), his last name (Lord Doe), and his title (Earl of Wickenham).
- Some of the mistakes and errors are omgWOW bad. Like this one: “When Colton had threw his coat, hat, and gloves at a baffled servant and darted up the stairs…”

Overall comments: I thought this was fun, but there’s nothing at all surprising here. The sci-Regency books are quite formulaic: Guys meet but can’t/won’t be together. Guys can’t stay apart because they’re hot for each other. Virtue of virgin prince is compromised. Guys get married. Rascal husband realizes he’s in love, whereas prince has known all along. Token misunderstanding or disagreement. Conclusion.(less)

Whatever you think about this series you can't deny that J L Langley has a way of writing fun sexy stories that may not always tax the brain cells, but never fail to deliver highly on enjoyment and the feel good factor. I really love this series, it's been a clever twist on the Regency romp using some modern technology and DNA splicing to ensure a world where all the males are gay and homosexuality the norm - but still keeping the sensibilities of the Regency period , meaning we get the tattling...more

While the glimpses we got of Steven/Raleigh and Rexley/Trouble definitely contributed to my enjoyment of this one (and I totally have to add my vote for a Steven/Raleigh prequel!) I think I like this one more because I understand both Colton and Sebastian better than I could understand Nate or Simon.

So I have read all of three books of regelence, and I must say this is the least interesting.
I mean I found Colton unlikeable, is like he did not have any direction, just let himself be guided.
He didnt even have that inner strenght that his brothers had/have.
So he didnt appeal to me.
And well the "RAKE", he didnt have anything of "RAKISH", he was just a lonely very lonely man.
In conclusion I didnt feel any sparks in this book as I felt in the other two.

There was no way I couldn’t love this romance for various reasons. First of all, I’m an old (very old) fan of Regency Romances, and while there is the twist of the Sci-Fi setting, My Regelence Rake is basically a very good Regency Romance (it was a long time I didn’t find the word “bedlam” in a novel…). Second, when asked, I always say I prefer Contemporary Gay Romance, since I want to see the main characters deal with realistic situation, but I have also a kink for transposing those same main characters in an alternative reality, and see how they would deal with a society where homosexuality not only is accepted, but it’s more common than heterosexuality. That is exactly what this series is doing, and I think J.L. Langley was one of the first to use this trick.

Aside from some oddity like laptops, a butler that is actually a software, a King with a King-Consort, phazers instead of swords, My Regelence Rake is the classical example of scandalous situation happening in front of the ton: Prince Colton has always being in love with Viscount Wentworth, Sebastian, but the Captain of the Royal Guard is a rake. Of course he is like that due to a broken-heart, a valiant officer he married into aristocracy for love, not for interest, but his beloved husband betrayed his love and trust; good-riddance he is now dead leaving Sebastian a widower and a viscount.

Of course there will be a scandal, and of course Sebastian will do the right thing, i.e. marry Colton. And here is where the surprise will also start: what is the obvious pairing the reader was building, Colton the shy and submissive virgin, Sebastian the bold and notorious scoundrel, are instead completely wrong? What is Colton will take the upper hand in their relationship, despite his young age? Already the author was preparing the ground having Colton with a big and strong body structure; only the age is inferior to Sebastian, but once these two are naked and alone, there are no cultural barriers between them, and they can enjoy their relationship as they like.

Even if it doesn’t seem so important, this is actually for me the main point of the novel: what is the expected relationship balance in this simil-Regency like society when both parties involved are men? Who is the Alpha/top and who is the Omega/bottom? (in the original concept I would have asked, who is the man and who is the woman?) if you think this is not important, you are not used to the Regency novels, where there are strictly rules on how the main characters have to deal with each other and with the context. In any case, J.L. Langley chose to dare those conventions, and to write her how balance… good for her and good for her readers!

I’m a huge fan of JL Langley’s books. I’m one of those readers who anxiously await her next release and once I get it, immediately read it cover to cover with as little interruption as possible. I love the way Ms. Langley gets to the heart and soul of her characters. Between her descriptive writing and addictive storytelling ability, I’m always hooked by her novels and eagerly wait for the next book in the series to be released. In My Regelence Rake, Ms. Langley gave me many hours of sheer enjoyment as I was swept up into the lives of her characters. The romance between Colton and Sebastian was truly a beautiful thing to see unfold within the pages of her story. I loved every minute I spent reading this book and it’s one of my favorite books in the Sci-Regency series.

Prince Colton has been in love with Lord Sebastian Hastings since the moment he laid eyes on him. No matter what Colton does, Sebastian doesn’t take him seriously, much less return his love, and when Colton catches Sebastian in the arms of another man, he decides to give up on his hope of being together with the rake and pursue his own dream…working with champion horses.

As soon as Colton starts ignoring Sebastian, the Lord starts to really take notice of him. When Sebastian is assigned to be Colton’s bodyguard, things start to really heat up between them and soon both men are swept up into a whirlwind of romance and mystery. Someone is determined to destroy everything Colton has worked for, and suddenly Colton and Sebastian are caught up in a scandal and are practically forced to be married. Together they must find out who is behind the ongoing danger to Colton’s family and horses and learn to trust in each other.

I LOVED this book! I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it and thoroughly loved seeing almost all of the past characters in the other books in the series play an important role in this book. I thought the friendship and sizzling chemistry between Colton and Sebastian was really the driving force behind the story itself. I loved watching their relationship grow and develop between them and thought they were truly meant to be together. Both Colton and Sebastian go through a lot of self-growth throughout the novel and each becomes a better man and a true partner for each other.

Honestly, I can’t rave about this series enough and if you haven’t read this book or the other two books in the series, I highly recommend it. Each book is phenomenal within their own right, and all three of them have a permanent spot on my keeper shelf. My Regelence Rake could probably be read as a stand-alone book, but to fully understand the dynamics of this amazing family, I HIGHLY recommend reading the books in series order. Believe me, once you start reading them, you won’t regret it!

In this third installment, we get the story of Colton, the fourth Townsend son. Colton has been in love with the head of their royal guard since he could remember. He is very aware that Sebastian only sees him as a nuisance and he knows that Sebastian is a bit of a rake, but it is not until he sees the evidence of this with his own eyes, that he finally tries to wean himself off Sebastian. Colton's choice of distraction is building up a racing stable and horse breeding farm.

But Colton's new enterprise doesn't work out quite the way he planned. His show of indifference has the opposite affect on Sebastian. Sebastian has a past that is littered with secrets and he was hurt terribly by his deceased husband so he is determined never again to leave himself vulnerable by having feelings for another man. Unfortunately, Colton is his weakness particularly a Colton who stands before him all grown up and settled into his manhood.

And neither of them stand a chance of maintaining their distance because Stephen has decided to do a bit of matchmaking. He makes Sebastian to be Colton's bodyguard when he goes to attend the horse auction. And the visit to the horse auction starts a whole chain of events that lead to quite an adventurous and tempestuous romance.

While the situation between Colton and Sebastian progresses, there is still the national threat of what is going on with the IN. A retired IN Admiral and his family has gone missing and the search is on because he left the impression that he knew something important. And on top of this, there is a menacing man shadowing the king.

As I said before, it is still a really good plot and the characters are still very endearing. The introduction of Sebastian and his friends along with the Townsend cousin, Dalton, into the mix made it all just better. I love how past characters are still playing minor roles and don't just disappear.
The only beef I had was that there were a few loose threads other than the on going IN intrigue. Sebastian's past was revealed all at once in the end, but yet things weren't even quite what he imagined them to be when he met up with the man he most hated. Hope it is brought up in the next story.

Series is still as strong as ever and I look forward to the next installment. It must be read in order and I can heartily recommend it to the Sci-Fi fan who can appreciate a strong element of M/M Regency Romance.(less)

I really enjoyed the first two books and was very excited about this one. I admit, I'm a bit disappointed, I expected more but it turned out differently.

The two main characters, Colton and Sebastian sort of bored me; their personalities seemed flat and one-dimensional (all Colton seemed interested in was horses, and Sebastian seemed to live and breathe only for security). Throughout the book, I found myself way more interested in Rexley's and Trouble's relationship, along with Steven and Raleigh's story. I'd much rather read about them. Or even Tarren.

I found this book had way too many conflicts most of which were left unresolved. It had way too many new characters considering the sizable amount of old ones. I'd have preferred to read more about Payton and Simon, for example, then have some Dalton and Rourke guys appear (whom I expected to play an important part, but it never came to that. They just showed up, seemingly with no purpose).

The ending was very abrupt and left me with more questions than answers. The plot and main characters in this book were very thin and flat, unfortunately. It was well written but some scenes seemed needlessly drawn out and too many sex scenes for a book with so many conflicts and mysteries (and characters!). This book felt like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be more romance or more mystery and in the end, turned out to be neither. It's more like a filler than a real, full-fledged story.

Another thing which irked me was that, when they had their first big argument they barely even talked it out. Colton just straight up jumped Sebastian and that was the end of that. It made it seem like their relationship wasn't very real, and there wasn't much of anything to it other than sex.

One other thing that's starting to sort of annoy me in this series is that most couples seemed to consist of a very young, inexperienced man and an old one. It was okay for the first book, but…I hope Tarren and Bannon and other young men will be paired with someone close to them in age. Or I probably will not read them, to be honest.

Overall, this book was okay. Two stars, not more and not worth a re-read.(less)

This author has been M.I.A. for a long time (especially in this industry) and the dedication at the beginning probably shows you why. To take a moment, I am sorry for the author and her family's loss.

These books are m/m Regency mistoricals (TM Dear Author) in space. As such I do make allowances for things such as titles and the way people are addressed but this time around I felt them more jarringly than ever. The push towards collegiality and connection was at the expense of respectful communication. I think it also highlights poor world building. People don't go to the trouble of re-creating a Regency-style culture and society without believing in and wanting the outward representations of a hierarchical world to be part of their lives. I am also concerned by how white the worlds of Regelence and Englor seem to be. There is no world building explanation for this nor can I see a justification. The only security precautions taken around the family with all the heightened risk were only those necessary for the plot. I need to believe in the cleverness of the characters and for the risks to be real. Thin world building undermines the story and this reader's immersion and suspense of disbelief.

The loving familial and friendship relationships are skilfully shown. I enjoyed seeing Stephen and Cony together and Rexley relating to his brothers and to Trouble. I liked Colton and Sebastian as people and how they were as a couple but didn't see them struggle for their HEA (but then I also thought Payton in his story forgave Simon too quickly). The introduction of lots of potential partners seems to set the world up for further stories but over-peopled this one to Colton and Sebastian's detriment.

The overarching plot line of the worry of what is going on with the IN was carelessly handled at the same time as it dominated Sebastian and Colton's story.

Sebastian's past is actually a strong critique of Regelence society highlighting social tensions. In this Regency dreaming I don't have a sense of The Royal family's struggle and engagement with the tensions of their world and the challenges they face as a society. I think I need this as a justification for there to be an hereditary ruler.

The book felt hurriedly written to me and not up to what I know the author can do or to the effervescent and clever idea of her world.(less)

I was torn with how to rate this. I've been waiting for this book for so long that I want to be extra careful that I'm not just reacting to overblown expectations.

I did enjoy it. As usual, J.L. Langley is far and away more talented than many other writers in this genre, and this book shows it - for the most part.

It was almost as good at the others, although there was a lot more conflict and struggle in the two first. But the main reason I'm giving it 3 stars is the ending. Seriously, what the hell? The other books left a lot of interesting points and possibilities to be explored in later books, but they felt complete all in themselves. This one feels like it was just a bridge between the other two books and whatever is to come.

Colton is different from Payton and Aiden, more assertive, less naive young virgin. I liked that, even if the sex was more vanilla than in the previous two.

I've waited and anticipated this book for so long, too long, that's it's incredible. I was ecstatic to see all my fav characters from the book return into this one and I couldn't have asked for more cause JL covered it. A long read, but really who can get enough? Not moi!

Loved concept--Regency/Sci-Fi--as a historian, I wanted to see how an author could pull this off. JL did it with class and heat and style.

Has it really been FOUR YEARS since the second book in this series came out? It seems so. I read this series back when I first started reading m/m in early 2010 and it has remained at the top of a very competitive list of all time favorite series. I've been so excited to read it that I spent all day yesterday reading as soon as I got the book, eager to read more about the royal family, the amazingly awesome world and to find out more about the overarching plot that was left up in the air at the end of the last book. The problem with waiting so long for a book is that it's almost impossible to live up to the overlong expectations. While it mostly did, I still found some problems with it that didn't work for me and left me unsatisfied, especially since I don't know how long I'll have to wait to get more of the story. Part of that is that I have much higher standards now than I did when I read the first two books -- if I read them now they might not be five star reads, I'm honestly not sure. Overall, though, I liked it and it was wonderful to go back to this world and visit these characters who I really love.

Colton, the fourth child of the King and King-Regent of Regelence has watched two of his brothers make love matches. He could only dream that the man he has fallen in love with as he's grown up could ever feel the same for him and that they could have a similar life together. The problem is that the man Colton loves, Sebastian (known as Wentworth for the name of his previous husband) is a rake and has quite the reputation of bedding easy men. That reputation, combined with his seeming disregard for Colton's rather obvious feelings, convinces Colton to take charge of his life, especially after witnessing Wentworth in a compromising position with another man at a ball. He decides to give up his pitiful unrequited romance and devote himself to a new career -- the breeding of racehorses.

The change in Colton's behavior puzzles Sebastian. As the Captain of the Guard, he knows the royal family well and the new Colton along with his now direct and driven behavior (not in his direction, as he is used to) worries him. Trying to guard Colton is more difficult now that he has changed and he sees him differently than before. Colton, like his brothers, has a problem with getting into trouble, and Sebastian is the type of trouble that a prince should be kept away from.

Through their dance of attraction, his own heavily guarded secrets threaten to come to light, along side a possible danger to Colton. Combined with the escalating tension among the political alliances of the government and the danger to his own family, the situation is set to explode in one way or another.

Maybe I don't remember the first two books well enough (it has been a long time since I read them), but my biggest problem with this book was there was just so much going on. So much of the story is devoted to the relationship between Colton and Sebastian that there is very little time for the overall plot arc to move forward. This saddened me because there are continuing references to things about to happen that seemed to get pushed off to the next book. I felt like… I had to wait so long to read more of this series and then I only got teasers. How much longer will I have to wait for a progression in the series? That's not to say that the story itself wasn't good. It works really well as a standalone book, I just wanted more of the overall plot.

The best part of reading this book, for me, was simply returning to this world. I absolutely adore the characters -- all the brothers and the consorts a few of them have (esp. Nate, from the first book, I LOVE Nate). Then there is Trouble and Rexley, the brothers' father and sire who are one of my favorite couples of the series even though they haven't gotten their own book (I would love to read it though!). They really have a lot of fun, which I like. You can tell that they're really a family who loves each other. The world itself is fun to read about and would never get old for me.

I thought the relationship between Colton and Sebastian worked really well. They deal with a lot of the issues you'd encounter in a contemporary story and the story is really focused on their relationship, with only little pieces of narration throughout the story from other POVs. There is a steadily building tension throughout the story. Their relationship is founded on secrets and lies, something that we know but Colton doesn't. The pressure builds and builds over the story, teasing up and up with all the other serious things going on. Sadly, in the end, it just didn't seem like a big deal to me. The ending fizzled. It really couldn't deliver unless Sebastian was hiding something utterly horrible because there is so much emphasis put on his secret and his past. That rather anticlimactic revelation along with the absence of more information about their trouble with the I.N. made me a little upset with the ending. Perhaps I wouldn't be as disappointed if I knew I might find out in a few months, or even within a year, but I'm afraid it will be at least another one or two years, maybe even more. I can't fault this author for her writing pace, but it does make it difficult to become invested in a series that is rarely updated. For me to be satisfied to wait, I wanted to be given a little more.

I know that nearly everyone who reads m/m will be reading this book and there will be nearly as many opinions, but I have to say that even though 80% of the book (roughly) was really satisfying to read, the last 20% let me down because my expectations had grown so high, because of both the wait and the lead up during the story. The story was really enjoyable to read either way. I hope that your opinion differs, I truly do, but I'd say everyone should read it anyway, and I know that almost all of you will be, very soon. :)(less)

Prince Colton has been in love with Lord Sebastian Hastings since the moment he laid eyes on him. No matter what Colton does, Sebastian doesn’t take him seriously, much less return his love, and when Colton catches Sebastian in the arms of another man, he decides to give up on his hope of being together with the rake and pursue his own dream…working with champion horses.

As soon as Colton starts ignoring Sebastian, the Lord starts to really take notice of him. When Sebastian is assigned to be Colton’s bodyguard, things start to really heat up between them and soon both men are swept up into a whirlwind of romance and mystery. Someone is determined to destroy everything Colton has worked for, and suddenly Colton and Sebastian are caught up in a scandal and are practically forced to be married. Together they must find out who is behind the ongoing danger to Colton’s family and horses and learn to trust in each other.

I LOVED this book! I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it and thoroughly loved seeing almost all of the past characters in the other books in the series play an important role in this book. I thought the friendship and sizzling chemistry between Colton and Sebastian was really the driving force behind the story itself. I loved watching their relationship grow and develop between them and thought they were truly meant to be together. Both Colton and Sebastian go through a lot of self-growth throughout the novel and each becomes a better man and a true partner for each other.

Honestly, I can’t rave about this series enough and if you haven’t read this book or the other two books in the series, I highly recommend it. Each book is phenomenal within their own right, and all three of them have a permanent spot on my keeper shelf. My Regelence Rake could probably be read as a stand-alone book, but to fully understand the dynamics of this amazing family, I HIGHLY recommend reading the books in series order. Believe me, once you start reading them, you won’t regret it!

This is a 3.5 rounded up to 4.

The above rating is partially related to the fact that Langley hasn't written book 4 yet so I'm a tad huffy; mostly it's because of all the cliff-hangers. I felt that the book wasn't complete & relied too heavily on the fact there is going to be another book to tidy up current plot lines.

I really love this series so when this book finally arrived I has excited to read it *sigh* unfortunately I was disappointed. It lacked something, even though all my favorite characters from the earlier books are here. I liked Sebastian and Colton their story was sweet for the most part but I hated how this ended. This author is a hit and miss with me. It also could be a bad week for me to read this a give a review. With this author I find that I get five pages of plot along with five pages of sex. Sometimes it works and sometimes I find myself skipping the sex scenes to get back to the plot. I LOVE this series, another great Langley book! I loved Colton and Sebastian but I also loved getting more of Steven and Raleighs relationship. To be vague, not to have to use a spoiler, I loved Aiden's drawings scene and Rexley and Trouble's meeting with Steven!
