I'm done, I'm done, I'm done. I refuse to continue this torture. I refuse.

EXISTENCE is over three-hundred pages of ~~lust~~ romance that came out of nowhere, countless sentences describing how Pagan's heart has been "broken beyond repair", a douchebag love interest, and so many grammatical and constructional mistakes I wondered how this even got published.

First, for lack of a better phrase, Dank is hotness incarnate. This is quite possibly the hottest, sexiest, steamiest YA book boyfriend I've ever read.

Second, Dank? I literally smacked myself in the forehead with my Kindle when I realized oh, that's not a typo, THAT'S HIS NAME. To each his own, I guess.

You know how they say don't judge a book by it's cover? With this one, go ahead, it's ok. It's what originally drew me to the book, so kudos to whoever's responsible for that little gift of gorgeo...more

Doteď prostě nechápu, jak může mít kniha na Goodreads hodnocení 4,01 při 11 248 hodnoceních! Nejspíš jsme každý četli jinou knihu...

Začnu s Pagan. Brrr... Příčí se mi to jenom napsat... K Pagan samotné jsem přistupovala v několika etapách. První jsem umírala smíchy kvůli jejímu jménu, které v překladu znamená "pohan". Prostě jsem se nemohla přenést přes to, že čtu o někom, kdo se jmenuje Pagan, a děkovala jsem Bohu (teď mi došla ta ironie :D), že je kniha psána v první osobě, a né ve třetí, protože z toho bych se asi zcvokla... Pak jsem si řekla, že se přes jméno snad dokážu nějak dostat, bohužel to bylo v té části knihy, kdy jsem začala ze srdce nenávidět samotnou Pagan. Ze začátku se zdála být normální, ale pak se z ní vyklubala sobecká, hloupá, naivní, psychicky labilní káča, která myslí jen na sebe, a já vám to hned objasním. Chodila s klukem jen proto, že jí to připadalo bezpečné, a ona nechtěla být sama, a myslela jen na sebe. Bylo jí úplně fuk, jak moc mu může ublížit. Ale co mě dopálilo ze všeho nejvíc bylo, že je s ním, pak na pár metrů odejde, a hned strká jazyk do pusy jinému klukovi. A její přístup? "Ahoj! Já jsem Pagan, od mala vidím duše lidí... Jé! Co asi dávají v telce?"... Pak je tu Dank... Jak já jsem doufala, že by to mohl výt jeden z těch kluků, na které budu myslet ještě další dny... A já na něj myslela, ale s odporem, a jistou dávkou nepochopení. Jeho chování mi přišlo zbrklé a neuvážené. A taky by mě zajímalo, co sakra vidí na Pagan? Mimochodem jeho jméno znamená "zatuchlý" a já nevím, jestli to má symbolizovat to, co je, nebo je to jenom hloupý žert autorky... Jediná věc, která se mi na Edwardovi ehm chci říct Dankovi alespoň trošku líbila, bylo to, že Pagan napsal a hrál ukolébavku... Co se týče Paganina přítele Leifa... Řekla bych, že půlku času, který strávil s Pagan se jí za něco omlouval, nebo si dával něco za vinu. Doteď nechápu, proč se s ní vůbec zahazoval, ale předpokládám, že se při nějakém fotbalovém zápase praštil do hlavy či co. I když vezmu v potaz že ani on není žádná výhra, rozhodně má na lepší. Paganinu kamarádku Mirandu si z nějakého důvodu představuji jako velkého černého pavouka, a jejího kamaráda Wyatta jako mimino z Čarodějek... Jediná postava, která za něco stála, byla Gee, a ta se tam objevila všeho všudy snad na pěti stránkách...

Co se samotného děje týče... Námět nebyl špatný, ale trochu mi to připomínalo Abandon triologii od Meg Cabot, a s tou se to opravdu srovnávat nedá. Na zápletku jsem přišla ve čtvrtině knihy, a pak jsem jenom čekala kdy to konečně dojde PAGAN (ale no táák co je to za jméno?!) Opravdu nechápu, jak může být tak natvrdlá, že ji to docvaklo, až když jí to řekli. . Ale pozor! Je pravda,že jsem se párkrát i uchechtla! Bohužel to bylo Paganině hlouposti... Kdyby neměla knížka tak málo stránek, asi bych s tím sekla hned na začátku. To, co Pagan cítila k Dankovi, určitě nebyla láska. Možná tak fyzická přitažlivost. A jestli si Pagan myslí, že Danka miluje, měla by se jít léčit...

Když nad tím tak přemýšlím, myslím, že byla chvilka, kdy jsem byla celkem šťastná, ale pak se to zase pokazilo... Bylo v době, kdy se Pagan dostala do psychiatrické léčebny! ANO! KONEČNĚ! A pročpak? Protože tak strašně miluje Danka, ale nemůže ho mít, a když ji on začne po jejich skoro- polibku na plese ignorovat, -mimochodem na plese, na kterém byla s Leifem (!) a pak měla nervy na to, aby ji Lief odvezl domů, a celou cestu se jí omlouval, protože si myslel, že je to jeho chyba-Pagan je hroozně smutná. Ale s Leifem to stejně neukončí, a dokonce ho nechá, aby ji navštěvoval, držel za ruku a litoval... A vrcholem všeho bylo, kdy se slečna obětavá rozhodla umřít pro Danka, kterého zná jak dlouho... dva týdny? *buší hlavou do stolu*. Tak co? Ještě nemáte dost? Fine... pokračujeme! Protože mě totálně dopálil ten konec. Pagan si tak vesele kráčí se svým milovaným přítelem, a kamarády po škole, když tu vyleze ven, a strká jazyk do krku úúúplně jinému klukovi. A já se ptám. Která duševně zdravá osoba, může dát tomuhle 5 hvězdiček? Konec byl hodně otevřený, ale to opravdu není ten důvod, proč si s největší pravděpodobností přečtu druhý díl. Asi si teď myslíte, že jsem se buď zbláznila, nebo ráda čtu knihy, které se mi nelíbí. No ani jedno... Jenom prostě nerada píši negativní recenze, protože autorce to určitě dalo práci, a já jí chci dát druhou šanci (asi proto jsem četla 8 dílů UD), navíc se říká, že druhý díl je lepší, tak uvidíme no :D Poučení pro příště :Ale no tak holka! ZAČNI SAKRA ČÍST ANOTACE!

I guess this book was good in a light fast read kind of way. There is not much going on here other than what you would expect to happen when there is a girl who sees ghost and death who stalks her.

If the summary has not given too much out already. Basically you have this girl Pagan who can see Ghosts but she has avoided acknowledging them all her life least of all people think her crazy. She continues to do the same when she meets a gorgeous soul at school. But surprise ....surprise this one is...more I guess this book was good in a light fast read kind of way. There is not much going on here other than what you would expect to happen when there is a girl who sees ghost and death who stalks her.

He is absolutely gorgeous which Pagan makes it her job to point out a number of times and he can talk which no other soul has ever done before. So you have a very curious Pagan who wants to know who he is. Of course we know who he is because the GR summary says it all, he is DEATH in person a fact that the heroine finds out only towards the end. There were times when I wanted to shout out this little detail to her because I knew too much...Where is the element of surprise GR people?? Then one thing leads to another Death is intrigued by her and ultimately falls in love with her. The Oh! so familiar "I love you but if I have you I will destroy you moments", A love triangle, an annoying best friend, a caring boyfriend, a disappearing love interest and a heartbroken heroine. EXISTENCE has it all.

It is not that I didn't enjoy the book. Truth be told I enjoyed it more than I expected to enjoy it but it still lacked the spark that I was looking for. Pagan was not an interesting heroine in fact I found her to be a glorified version of Bella but with a little more backbone. Death or Dank was much more interesting but he also did have me frustrated at times. What surprised me the most however was that for once I was not rooting for the main lead but the secondary hero Leif. I found his character much more interesting and at times wished that Pagan would forget all about Dank and decide Leif is her true love. I didn't like the way Pagan was using him and he deserved better. I have read only another one of Abbi Glines series before this one and I enjoyed it more than this. Yet I would recommend it to all those who are looking for a quick light read to get through a lazy weekend. (less)

Yes, this cover does Death justice. Every time his eyes are mentioned, remember the cover and swoon. This book has the feel of an Abbi Glines romance with a shift to the paranormal.

Overall: I enjoyed this book very much. I read it within two night sittings and couldn’t wait to keep reading. Book one, to me, feels like more of a YA love story with paranormal elements, because the plot doesn’t revolve around paranormal activity like other paranormal romance books I’ve read. Another YA book with the same old formula.. why do I keep punishing myself reading books like these..because I keep hoping that I'll find characters that I'll fall in love with even if the story maybe similar to every other paranormal YA book.
Anyway we have our protagonist Pagan who can see souls/ghosts.. but can't communicate with them. One day she sees a soul/ghost who talks to her.. needless to say she's shocked.. and also fascinated by his oh so beautiful beauty.....more 1.5 stars - Spoilers beware

Anyway we have our protagonist Pagan who can see souls/ghosts.. but can't communicate with them. One day she sees a soul/ghost who talks to her.. needless to say she's shocked.. and also fascinated by his oh so beautiful beauty..
Pagan is weak, she cries, moans, breaks down, runs away every chance she gets. She starts to tutor the highschool quarterback - Leif and for some strange reason Leif likes her and starts to date her - maybe he hurt his head at a football game and lost his senses.. who knows. Anyways Leif and Pagan become closer but the beautiful soul - who wait for is called Dank- WTF?? turns up at her school as a student and starts flirting with Kendra, Leif's ex.. of course Pagan is heartbroken that he's flirting with Kendra who she labels as the 'school slut' which just makes her seem bitchy.
Leif is a good boyf but Pagan doesn't appreciate him and just pines for our dear Dank - the only reason I can think of for her pining after him is that he's hot and plays her music, oh and he's wrote her a lullaby a la Edward and Bella.
Pagan finds out that Dank is actually Death and he saved her life when she should have died.. Pagan loves him now more than ever, but still doesn't break up with Leif.. Dank goes away to protect her.. blah blah blah.. Pagan has a breakdown because Dank said bye bye and ends up in a mental hospital because she's a weak, self pitying, self centred fool.. Leif is there for her.. Pagan still doesn't break up with him.. stuff happens.. more stuff happens.. Dank and Pagan kiss and make up.. and then she finally decides she should break up with Leif of course after she's kissed and declared her love to Dank.. the last line we find out Leif's not human?!!! so because of the last line I must read the next book to find out what my favourite character is.. sigh.. This is the first book i read from Abbi Glines and for sure it wont be the last. It totally hooked me by reading and dont be supriced with the number of pages there are so many things thats going on,so many guesses at what on earth happening that you wont even realise how fast you will read the book

Very interesting concert about ghosts,souls and the ability of Pagan actually seeing. (You might think the movie too as i did) and Kudos for Pagan too for Holding up so well because if i was in her shoes... oh boy!

Dank/Pagan relationship : What you can say?Its weird,its odd,its annoying you will feel like a blond girl with zero IQ with the relationship with how it started,most basicly because of Dank as a character... So complex so bizzard but i think Abbi did that on purpose right? the only thing that i didnt get and didnt understand is how those two involved specially because of Dank... Everything is about Dank and you will get frausting and you will scream for more about him because if you ask me we dont have so many clues about him.... I personally want to find out do you? I mean you will get what he is but you will wonder for sure for some actions he made..

Feeling comfused about some spesific things which i would really want to have a reasonable explanation : Appearing human and then wipe out all humans memories and then come again? I mean WHY?

She tries to ignore him but he doesn't go away, in fact he talks to her. That's never happened before. Oh and this boy is sizzling hot, very hard to ignore. Fascinated by this boy, she can't seem to stay away from him. But that could be a problem since he's there to take her when she dies. Oh yes, that hot boy is death.

My Thoughts:

5 stars - a must read

Can I just say that Abbi has a way with romance that I love. I wasn't sure how that would work with a paranormal twist but it was fabulous. The passion builds between Pagan and the mystery boy as he stays just close enough to watch her. But the mystery of who he is and what he's doing there grows and twists down unexpected paths. While there is another pretty nice guy interested in Pagan, it's clear who she wants but can't have. He seems occupied with another as well. But it's not a love triangle or square. It's building passion and mystery rolled into a fast pasted adventure that ends with an unexpected bang. The ending had me happy and clawing for the next book.

The world was totally believable. It's a normal high school with Pagan seeing ghosts or spirits that don't talk to her. She's learned to live with that and to ignore them. I really like this type of paranormal where most everything is normal except some little thing that could and does blend right in.

As for the characters, I love Pagan. She's trying to make good grades and choices. Her conscious gets her involved tutoring Leif. He's the all too perfect football quarterback that's had a thing for Pagan for a while. I admit that at first I thought, oh no love triangle but it's not that at all. Pagan cares for Leif but really as a friend. What she feels for Dank on the other hand is burning raw passion that effects both of them with such intensity that Dank is forced to keep his distance to protect her. It is that forbidden love problem and I do mean forbidden.

The only problem I could find with this book is that it wasn't long enough. Could have added a few more scenes in there and I would have loved it more. But really it was just what I needed to read. I've had a few disappointing reads lately and this one was a breath of fresh air.

If you love YA like I do, then this is must read.(less)

Summary:

I just changed my Abbi Glines badge from "fan girl" to "super fan girl". Seriously, everything she writes becomes sparkly and amazing. At least for me. I loved Existence so much! Dank makes me all swoony and weak in the knees. One of my favorite books of 2011.

Like you are right there in the middle of the story. It's amazing. That's why I have such a hard time putting down her books. I LOVED Dank. He is so mysterious but right away you can tell that he is attached to Pagan. My only complaint about the whole book is that I wanted to see more of Dank. Im really hoping that in the next book we get to see a little bit of his POV. PLEASSEEE!? I'm a sucker for guy's point of view.

Pagan was a pretty cool main character too. She was logical and nice, but she was still a teenager. When love came into the equation she went a little crazy, like we all tend to do. I loved that you could feel Dank's emotions where Pagan was concerned. He had a crazy sense of desperation about him sometimes. I need to know more about him. I just need to.

This book had me on a crazy roller coaster ride. It was mysterious and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, to threw me for a loop. I'm particularly talking about the last 15% of the book. So much happens near the end that you will need to hold onto your seat. But it is awesome and you will love every second of it. The last page had me super duper happy and shocked at the same time. My mind is already cranking at top speed trying to figure out what is going to happen next. I can't wait to find out. If you have not read any Abbi Glines books, you are really missing out! This is one book that I would pick up ASAP! (less)

*sigh* It should have been a fun read!! What I got instead is a silly cliché story that leaves you hanging with an abrupt cliffhanger. OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME? I ran with this book trying to be forgiving, I kept telling myself not to be so spiteful and hateful toward it as I believed this was self published. The only reason I kept reading was due to the fact Existence ended on a bitch of a cliffhanger & I had to know the answer.

They weren't my fav series but I will continue cause I need to know the answer to Predestined's cliffhanger ...very clever author!!!!

You know those books... The ones that you anxiously wait for.

Come on, you know what I’m talking about..

The premise is great. The cover is amazing! We’ve all seen them. Most of them have girls with dresses that look like they were stolen from “Gone with the Wind” movie set, and have no actual meaning to the book. You then read the book, and sadly your let down.

I really enjoyed this piece of YA Supernatural and look forward to continuing with this series. Kept my attention and a book my daughter can read too.

Many reviewers hated this book. Are there some parts of the story that are unbelievable.....like how is Death hanging with Pagan and doing his job at the same time? Are the names in the book horrible? Yes. But who cares its YA supernatural, I am not expecting a masterpiece, just some frivolous fun.
