An adaptation of the classic book Disciplines of a Godly Man, this new book provides a biblical framework for living a radical life as a young disciple of Jesus. Point blank, this is a punchy, no-holds-barred book for young men that lays out the call and command to be disciplined, godly, and sold-out for Jesus. Addressing topics such as purity in one's thought-life, peer p...more

I love watching the Lord provide. I've been praying for the Lord's help in my relationship with my 14-year-old son. In many ways, it's easier being the mother of a teen daughter than son because our common interests make it easier to relate to my daughter. We also spend a lot of time working together, and we have read many books together about being a godly young woman.

I find reading books with my children to be a relationship-building experience as it opens the door to communicate about those...more
It seems like there are a number of books out there aimed at young Christian women, but relatively few aimed at young men. There are a handful, but not a wide selection. One of these is the brand new Disciplines of a Godly Young Man by R. Kent Hughes and W. Carey Hughes.

Here's the publisher's description:

"Point blank, this is a punchy, no-holds-barred book for young men that lays out the call and command to be disciplined, godly, and sold-out for Jesus. Addressing topics such as purity in one’s...more

What is discipline? For many people, the first answer that comes to mind is punishing a child to correct a wrong. That’s part of it, but there’s so much more. The basic meaning of “discipline” is training. “Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance” (2 Timothy 4:7-9). Based upon this passage, Discipl...more

This book was designed to maximise the number of men who could and would read it. As a result, the vocabulary was simple, the chapters were short and to the point, and each chapter was broken up into many small sections. The point of the book was focused: to encourage young Christian men to live their lives for Jesus is deed and not just in word. The book systematically worked through different “disciplines” of the Christian life that the authors recommend the reader work on. In this regard the...more
If you have a son and you want to find that book that speaks to him without making him feel feminized or beating around the bush, then look no further than Disciplines of a Godly Young Man. The authors take the reader through what discipline is and why it’s needed for a godly life then into five areas covering relationships, soul, character, ministry, and discipline. You won’t find a pat on the back, easy answer, go ahead and do it your way as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else in this book – y...more

Okay, I will start out by saying I am a mom of 3 young boys (8, 4 and 4 months - really young boys)so I was excited to receive this book from Crossway as a review copy. Now I would like to go purchase the others in the series!

I absolutely loved this book! I had to refrain from continuing to type excerpts on my Facebook page because so much of this book is quote worthy and easily applicable to the lives of children today. This author team has done an exceptional job of compiling information that...more

As far as I know, this is the most comprehensive book for young men. It covers a wide range of topics for young men to discipline themselves in, which enables them to be very well-rounded as they grow into adulthood and manhood. As an adapted version of the book for men, the content is great, but the language and writing could be modified to better suit the youth. Other than that, this book is great and I will continually recommend it to young men.
