Two weeks ago, thirteen-year-old Mason Stark and seventeen of his fellow cadets from the Academy for Earth Space Command boarded the SS Egypt. The trip was supposed to be a short routine voyage to log their required spacetime for summer quarter.

But routine goes out the airlock when they're attacked by the Tremist, an alien race who have been at war with humanity for the la...more

3.5 stars As a big fan of Dan Krokos' False Memory, I was very eager to read his first middle grade sci fi adventure, which follows a 13-year-old cadet named Mason Stark, who is aboard the space ship Egypt when it's attacked by an alien race called the Tremist. When the ship's captain is killed, and with most of the crew out of commission, Mason must find a way to rescue the survivors--and to find out why the aliens attacked in the first place.

The Planet Thieves was a fun book. It's absolutely true to the sci-fi genre and I applaud that, as that's not so common for the middle grade crowd. It's action-packed and doesn't really give you time for a breather - not necessarily a bad thing.

I really liked Mason. He's placed in a tenuous situation and the kid, despite being young and inexperienced, dives right in and takes charge. I can totally get down with an MC like that. There is a lot of focus on the friendships and you get a real sense...more

Reading, in my household, is a way of life. Books are everywhere. Stacked on shelves, stuffed in random boxes, perched precariously on the tops of lamps. Walking into my house is like walking into hermit’s habitat, with slightly more light. Though it irritates my husband from time to time (I’ve deduced this from his annual threats of “Don’t make me sell your books!”) I have found that my children don’t seem to mind. So I asked my son once, “Why doesn’t mommy’s books bug you? They are all over th...more

Mason lives on the USS Egypt with his sister Susan as an ESC Cadet after the death of his parents. When Tremists (an alien race hostile to humans) attack the ship, the captain is killed, his sister is taken hostage, and Commander Lockwood is so gravely injured that he puts Mason in charge. Tom, the captain's son, is a bit put out, but knows that the cadets must take back the ship if there is any hope of defeating the Tremists. They have been fighting with the ESC over the habitable planet Nori-B...more

Mason Stark is a cadet on the USS Egypt. He and several other cadets are riding along as part of their training. Suddenly the Tremists attack the ship. Earth and the Tremists have been at war for years, fighting over the only other inhabitable planet in the galaxy. The crew of the Egypt is taken hostage and Mason and the other cadets must liberate the ship. The Tremists were after a giant cross gate that can transport entire planets. They steal Earth and are about to steal the other planet. Maso...more

The Planet Thieves is a strong middle grade debut from author Dan Krokos. With it's intriguing premise and unique way it entwines a typical school story with that of saving the world, The Planet Thieves was a treat.

I really enjoyed the characters, particularly the female characters. Both Merrin and Susan were both just really well rounded characters and I loved how loyal they were to their cause. The rivalry between Tom and Mason really added to both of their character as well.

While I did real...more

Four stars: A fun book that feels like a Star Trek adventure!

Mason is horrified to hear the alarms sounding while he is on the bridge trying to play a silly prank on his older sister Susan. Quickly, he hides and watches in terror as The SS Egypt is engaged by their enemy the Tremists. Before the action gets dangerous, Susan insists on escorting Mason off the bridge and locking him in the Brig, not only to punish him for his actions, but in her mind it is a great way to keep him safe. Mason refus...more

Though marketed as a middle grade novel, do not let the age of the protagonists scare you away if you're an older reader. Krokos' sophomore novel is well-written and does not speak down to the audience. I loved Krokos' debut, False Memory, and he's hit it out of the park once again. The Planet Thieves is funny, full of adventure, and packed with delightful characters.

Novels for children and teens are full of absent parents and authority figures. This construct allows for young people to feel emp...more

First things first... I LOVED this book! The Planet Thieves is pure science fiction - set on a space ship, fighting aliens, far in the future. You don't find many books like this for the MG crowd. And this one is a page-turner from start to finish. As a girl who grew up watching every incarnation of Star Trek (though Next Generation and Voyager are my favorites), I felt right at home in this book. Dan Krokos taps into established elements of the genre - we spend a lot of time on "the br...more

I loved THE PLANET THIEVES – absolutely LOVED it. An edge of the seat, action packed adventure; how adventures should be. I am not really into space based Sci-fi all that much nowadays, although I devoured all of Robert Heinlein’s books as a teen, and dabbled in the occasional Andre Norton. I do enjoy dystopian books but they are usually based on a future society here on earth. Then I find THE PLANET THIEVES! Grabbing me from page one it was a roller coaster ride to the end with lots of twists...more

I had the ARC of this from Net Galley.

I just wish they had written books like this when I was a Teen as it was perfect reading for a YA (or a teen at heart like me!)The pace was racy and action packed, with so many twists to the story I was on a constant roller-coaster whilst reading it. I certainly couldn't put it down as it was so intense with well written characters and a plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

Space cadets on a routine mission encounter alien forces who are attempting to steal a habitable planet but instead steal Earth - taking it to their own solar system. Of course the cadets are placed in circumstances far beyond their capacities and save the day. A great introduction to sci-fi for middle/upper school students and an all-round good read.

Great book--the action never stopped, and it was full of plot twists--I stayed up reading it past when I should have slept. A couple of times I would have liked things to slow down just a little bit to develop more of the story--it definitely leads right into a sequel. Very clean and appropriate. I would not hesitate to let Eli read this.

I cannot wait to read this! I am a huge science fiction and star trek nerd- basically anything relating to space interests me :)
I got really excited and actually squealed when I found this book...Like, is that normal? (Have I been spending too much time on goodreads?)
ANYWAY, super excited to add this to my collection eventually!

Oh goodness! I can't wait for this book! The first sentence totally got my attention Star Trek meets Rick Riordan . As a fan of Rick Riordan, I will really check this out!

I hope 2013 will come soon. A few more months and this would be released! I can't wait! :)

I picked up this book yesterday and started to read it in the store, and I couldn't stop. I had to buy it right away. The characters are so awesome and funny. It made me wish that I lived in the future and could be a cadet in earth space command.
