It's not unusual for John Cardinal to be hauled out of a warm bed on a cold night in Algonquin Bay to investigate a murder. And at first this dead body, sprawled in the parking lot of Motel 17, looks pretty run of the mill: the corpse has a big bootprint on his neck, and the likely suspect is his lover's outraged husband. But the lover has gone missing. And then Delorme, f...more

I have really enjoyed his other books.

First of all, any book from a popular author that has an editing mistake is a sure sign of sloppy success (p 155).

This book might have been better as two better developed stories. There was too much action and not enough substance (character development). And the sex club scenes were quite vanilla.

I hope this latest effort does not indicate a nosedive.

Until the Night marks the sixth (and much awaited) entry in Giles Blunt's mystery series featuring Detective John Cardinal.

Until the Night opens with a cryptic entry from something called The Blue Notebook, giving us a brief glance into an Arctic science station. The next chapter takes us back to more familiar territory - Algonquin Bay, Ontario - 340 miles north of Toronto. It is here that John Cardinal lives and works. He and counterpart Lise Delorme are called in to investigate what looks to...more

Giles Blunt is one the great unsung mystery writers this country has produced...sure he gets attention but he should be lionized. His John Cardinal Series is marvelous...portrays a part of Canada not often found in genre fiction and characters who are human, complicated and somewhat endearing. This outing..Until the Night...brings out some intriguing aspects of all the main characters...intimations of masochism, major bouts of self doubt and long buried feelings as well as sheer nasty office poli...more

Until the Night is the latest entry in Giles Blunt's exceptional series featuring North Bay police officers, John Cardinal and Lisa Delorme. The story moves back and forth between an Artic research station and a case which begins with the discovery of a woman's body in an abandoned building in the woods. The woman had been dressed for the cold weather, then chained to prevent escape. Blunt slowly reveals how the two stories are related, building the tension to a perfect pitch.

This book is a 4.5...more

I'm a big fan of Giles Blunt's John Cardinal series, and Until the Night was no exception. In fact, this is probably my second-favourite book in the series, after By the Time You Read This... . As usual, the characters are very well-drawn, and the central mystery is intriguing and interesting. Blunt is also very good at placing you in his settings, and the chilly shores of Algonquin Bay (aka a thinly disguised North Bay) seem very real. Bits that take place in Toronto and Ottawa give the setting...more

I love the characters John Cardinal and Lise Delorme. I've read the whole series and loved every book. But I didn't like what Blunt did by giving us a peek at Lise's supposedly dark side. For one thing, it just doesn't ring true for Delorme. And then Blunt sweeps the issue under the carpet and expects me to believe that Cardinal adopts a can't-we-just-move-on-from-here attitude. It wasn't convincing, and I don't buy it. That was worth 2 stars right there.

The 3rd star was for not revealing how Du...more

Blunt is at the top of his form in the latest John Cardinal mystery. There's a new lead investigator on the team - a hotshot from Toronto - but his sense of what is and isn't important may be a little skewed. Cardinal and Lise Delorme are at a critical moment in their relationship and his distance and her investigations into a sex murder may be getting in the way. Someone is killing people by slowly freezing them to death. The reasons may be linked to something that happened in a remote arctic s...more

The best of the Cardinal series so far. I'm not sure I love what Blunt is doing with Cardinal and Lise - maybe because so many of their scenes force us to harken back to Cardinal's wife, reminding of "By the Time You Read This", which I thought was awful.

But that's still sub-plot. The main thread - a present-day mystery that has its roots in a long-ago arctic adventure - was so well-plotted, with just the right amount of misdirection. I stayed up way too late to finish this book, and didn't even...more

I'm a huge fan of the John Cardinal series. I love the characters and watching them grow from book to book. However, I thought this book was really weak in that area. Some of the dialogue between Cardinal and his partner Lise Delorme just didn't sound true. I think some of the story could have been fleshed out a little more. On the other hand, I can tell there was a lot of research done on the Arctic. It's summer here in Arizona, and as I was reading the 'cold' scenes, I was sorely tempted to pu...more

Perhaps my favourite in the series so far. I particularly enjoyed the chapters "From the Blue Notebook", chronicling a scientist's time at an Arctic research base. Slowly, Blunt reveals how this seemingly unrelated journal is relevant to the main story. Blunt's writing in this novel - like in all his others - is suspenseful, informative and emotionally engaging.

A Masterful Canadian Mystery that doesn't apologize for the fact. John Cardinal discovers a serial murderer with cause. The high Arctic background story is magnificent on its own, but when combined with the action in Algonquin Bay, Ottawa, Toronto and points roundabout it is superb. Blunt is a brilliant writer and I'm anxiously waiting for the next in the series.

I liked this book only because I love John Cardinal so much but I felt that this was one of the weaker entries in the Cardinal series. The two story lines didn't work very well and Lise's reaction to Cardinal and her own self-exploration seemed forced and out of character. Three stars because Cardinal comes through as always as so true and real, but disappointed nonetheless.
Carol
Mystery set in Algonquin Bay Ontario (aka North Bay). Reminiscent of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series. These murders have their roots in a tragedy set in the Arctic 15 years previous. We get a glimpse of the Arctic tragedy through the "blue book" diary kept by one of the characters who was part of the Arctic expedition

This is his best yet. I really like how the main characters are developing, though I found Lise's excursions a little unbelievable.
I wondered through most of the book how the different story arcs would intersect, and when they did it was very effective.
Giles Blunt is a great writer.

Another really good novel featuring John Cardinal and his partner. It begins following four stories and keeps you wondering how any of these are related. Of course eventually it all melts into two distinct cases. The good guys chase the bad guys to the Arctic, Toronto, Goderich and back to Algonquin. Brilliant!
Elizabeth
Waited for this one having read all the previous in the series and was disappointed. Like others I was not thrilled with his portrayal of Lise. The two story blend was interesting but did not help to make this a strong or interesting read.

Susana
I'm a sucker for this series, the Canadian references, having lived in North Bay all feels so cozy. Toss in a couple of very likable intelligent detectives and good dashes of sex and twisted humanity and these make excellent escapes.
Gail
Giles Blunt crime fiction is invariably delicious...in this book, two storylines alternate chapters, merging near the end in a brilliant climax. The professional relationship between Inspector Cardinal and Detective Delorme suddenly becomes personal and threatens to implode.
Sandi
Giles Blunt's writing style attracts my reader's mind most assuredly. I spotted this book today and bought it immediately. His characters smell real and jump off the page. The story settings breathe and live. We'll see how this latest book works out.
Finished the book. Gotta tell you the purple cover had me!!! Loved the book. Will now wait patiently for the next time Giles Blunt's writing suspends my disbelief......
Patricia
This novel is a race-to-the-finish detective thriller. It is masterfully woven together with so many separate threads and subplots, that I plunged into the second stretch wondering how they could possibly intersect and be resolved. I was not disappointed. I did however chose the wrong time of year to read this. While I had no trouble at all relating to its powerful imagery and frozen Canadian settings(I only had to look out my own window), I found myself preoccupied with desperately wishing I wa...more

Sixth in the John Cardinal series, focusing this time on Lise Delorme, Cardinal's partner-in-detection and soon-to-be romantic partner, in a complex thriller.
Lester
What a great style of writing in this novel!! Sometimes when an author 'flips' back and forth between past and present it is disconcerting..however..Giles Blunt rocks.

Excellent. A beautifully written and compelling crime story set in northern Ontario. The sixth in a terrific series.
Derek Broughton
A few too many coincidences, and Lise Delorme acting like an idiot, but on the whole an enjoyable and quick read.
Linda
I often found the back and forth betweenthe two plot lines annoying. Just got right into one and then you were back to the other. Thatbsaid, I really liked the book.
Catherine Irvine
I enjoyed this one but it took me a while to get into the split story-telling style.
Gremlin
I've liked this series all along but I fear that this latest installment might have doomed it. Delorme's character took on some new dimensions that seem to have come from nowhere and I'm not sure the new set-up between Cardinal and her can work. Also, I'm not a prude but I did find this book a little sleazier than its predecessors which was somewhat off-putting. What I enjoyed most were the segments set in the arctic. I am willing to give the next book a try when it arrives to see how the relati...more

Giles Blunt (born 1952 in Windsor, Ontario) is a Canadian novelist and screenwriter. His first novel, Cold Eye, was a psychological thriller set in the New York art world, which was made into the French movie Les Couleurs du diable (Allain Jessua, 1997).

He is also the author of the John Cardinal novels, set in the small town of Algonquin Bay, in Northern Ontario. Blunt grew up in North Bay, and Al...more
