Every kid sometimes wants to be someone else. And so, it turns out, do some cats. Kids will relate to how hard it is for each cat to try to be like the other. They'll also love the true-to-life way that, after the fur stops flying, an unexpected change occurs, making both cats happy to be just exactly who they are.

Ever so often I sneak into the children's department at the local library and borrow a children's book I've heard about to indulge my whimsy. If you are so inclined, this little picture book is sure to delight you. It is about a red cat and a blue cat who live in the same household but cannot get along. Secretly the red cat wants to be like the blue cat, and the blue cat wants to be like the red cat.... You can imagine the consequences.
BTW "red" and "blue" have nothing to do with politics; this...more

Red Cat, Blue Cat by Jenni Desmond is the story of two cats grumpily living together in the same home. One lives upstairs, the other downstairs.

For anyone who has introduced one cat to another — cats who aren't siblings and weren't raised together knows how difficult it is to get a pair of cats to accept each other. It's no different here. There's a bit of jealousy between the two and that's what plays out.

What a fun book to share about self-esteem without being overtly didactic. Two cats fight all the time but decide they really want to be more like the other cat. Crazy antics ensue as they each try to become another color. (The cat in the fridge scene is my favorite. Wait, no, maybe it's the one of the cat sliding into blue paint.) The illustrations are hilarious and you will find more to talk about with each reading you do with your child. Great for age 4+. Enjoy!

Fun art and a nice story about just being yourself.
However, Mama Bella Underfoot, my 13 year old tabby, wants you to know that this is terribly un-catlike. No self-respecting cat would want to be some other cat--they know that they are the most wonderful cat the world has ever seen?
(Molly, our 7 month old kitten may differ. I think she wants to be just like Bella when she grows up. And Bella wants to know if anyone out there wants a black and white kitten...)

Two cats want to be more like each other, even though they don't really get along. In their attempts to become each other they discover that if they just teach other certain things not only can they learn new things, but they can make a new friend in the process.

Not one of the best books on animal friendship I've read. It was kind of hard to follow the story at times and I kept getting the cats mixed up. The illustrations are cute.

These two cats do not like each other. Not one little bit. The secret behind their hatred? Jealousy. Red cat is agile and fast while blue cat is smart and cunning. And each secretly want to be like the other. What steps will they take to accomplish this?

A nice addition to pet stories because there are two pets living side-by-side, and not very pleasantly--something sure to relate to.

I read for Red Cat and Madam read Blue Cat's lines and we had a terrific time being all growly and prickly and disagreeable with each other in the beginning. What fun seeing the transition in the kitties--the illustrations are marvelous!--and meeting Yellow Cat at the end was so silly. Do I sense a sequel?

When I grabbed this book from the "new book" section at the library I knew it would either suck or be great, it was great. Funny read about two cats who loath yet admire each other. A fun read aloud that kids will want to read over and over again.

A charming and fun-filled story standing on its own eight feet, but also useful for pattern, prediction, competition, cooperation, word-recognition, and problem-solving. If YouTube is any indicaiton, everybody loves cats!

PB 37: AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME :) I liked this book a lot. It had an awesome moral (not to get competitive but to work together instead), great characters, and a great layout! I would definitely purchase this book.

This was the favorite among my K-2 students during the "book election" a story about trying to be like someone else and realizing that you really prefer being yourself...and friendship.
Jill
Humorous story with a good moral that my daughter and I talked about. However, it wasn't a wow book for her she is 3.5. I think it may be more Appropriate for school aged kids.

Just adorable! Cute story, awesome illustrations. If you (or your kids) like cats, or even if you don't, this book is for you.
Lindsay
A nice story about differences. I enjoyed the sketchy illustrations, especially the expressions of the cats.
Mary
A bit long, but a nice tale about learning new things but ultimately being glad to be yourself.
Deborah
better story for the K-2 crowd, about learning new things, becoming friends, etc.

Red Cat wants to be like Blue Cat. Blue Cat wants to be like Red Cat. Each cat tries to teach the other how to act like the other. Eventually they realize that instead of trying to be like each other, they should just like themselves.

My favorite part about this book are the facial expressions of the cats. They're drawn on with marker, and they're very expressive.
Shelley
I love finding a book with perfect art and perfect words. My boys love these cats, and so do I.
Janet
A good debut picture book from an English author/illustrator. Basic story of "one always wants to be someone else" only this time its told through the antics of two cats. Fun to look at illustrations.
