I really did like this book. I didn't find it spectacular, but I honestly really did enjoy it. Even if the title is a tad bit too long. The idea was unique and while I think it could have been developed further, the execution was not shabby and I really have so many good things to say about this book. It was one of the most fun books that I've read in a long time and I cannot wait to read more.

I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. I came away with a different way of looking at things.

Daphne and the Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society tells the story of Daphne, who finds that she's in a world where witchcraft is real. Only this witchcraft is unlike anything she's ever experienced before through pop culture. There's no Hedwig, no magic wands, no pointy hat. It's just the witch, physics and a Ticonderoga pencil.

I enjoyed how Shields used something that's been d...more

It felt like entering the persecution of high school all over again. But with the addition of witchcraft. There were some really funny moments in this book, and I enjoyed learning more about Daphne's world and her new world of witchcraft. However, I wanted more. More explanations about the Daughters of Spite and the Daughters of Charm. There was a lot of great background about specific witches and wars in the past, but I wanted a better explanation of why witches and wizards are at odds with eac...more

This was an interesting take on the idea of magic. It is a book for teens, or even pre-teens that, once it gets started, makes for an entertaining read.
The main issue I saw with the book is that it starts off too slowly. I don’t really see any teen reader sticking with it long enough to get to the real story, which is a shame. There are some lovely moments, and some quite original concepts in the story, which, when dealing with the idea of magic in the real world, is rather impressive. I’d expec...more

Can I just start out by saying that the title is WAY too long. It's really difficult to remember and type. Therefore, the name of the society is now being shortened to "the society" because I'm too lazy to keep typing it. Also, Shields' writing is a bit formal, especially for a bunch of 13 year-olds. It made the story harder to believe. I was unable to relate to any of the characters because there was no emotion in the story. That being said, Shields had a lot of really good ideas, and I really...more

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to be asked to review this book by the author and I was pleasantly surprised by what I got to read. I didn't know much about the book before reading except the summary on goodreads. For me, it was a fun, light, and quick read and was the first book about witches that I have read and it was definitely a different one at that.

We first met Daphne, the main character, who her whole life has been bullied by the most popular...more

When I first started reading this book I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t read the synopsis so I wasn’t sure if I was going to be reading a children’s, teens, or adult book. It turned out this was a teen book, but it was aimed more at a younger audience if that makes sense. This book is about Daphne Downing as she learns about the world of witchcraft. One day at school Daphne is in her schools bathroom when she witnesses magic being used. She soon learns that the bathroom is where the Myster...more

Daphne and Vi were enemies since kindergarten. Vi is the one who is beautiful, talented, popular cheerleader. And Daphne, she is just a normal 14-teen years old girl. During an argue in the school bathroom, Vi performs magic on her. Real witchcraft. Daphne finds out that almost every single girl in the school is a witch. Her sister, Amanda, is a witch. Their mother was a witch. Her best friend Lyla is a witch. What a turnover.

Every witch has her own Red Book for witchcraft. When Lyla borrows he...more

This book was one of the most surprising I've read this year. I went into it not knowing what to expect at all...and ended up with a nice surprise.

This book was the most surprising read I've had this year. I thought the pitch was original and the author was very good at developing his world. It wasn't necessarily the most believable urban fantasy I've come across, but I can (probably) safely say that the idea has never been used before and I applaud Robert Shields for that, particularly since so...more

I needed a real change of genre, and a bit of witchcraft seemed to be a good way to go (and I loved the title!) – not the sort of thing I usually read, but I like to broaden my horizons, and only a few pages into the story, I believed that I was going to be pleasantly surprised, despite already having come across a number of editorial blips.

Daphne is relentlessly taunted by fellow schoolgirl, Vi, and her three sheep-like followers. An unfortunate incident concerning some rather comical underwear...more

What it's about: Witches and magic with an amazing twist!

What I thought: Robert Shields has written a wonderful book. He has taken something as popular as witches and magic and given it his own creative twist - with fantastic results! Daphne discovers that magic is real, but it is nothing like she ever thought. Witches cast spells by manipulating matter using physics - don't worry, it's all explained as you go along ;) While this book is unique in itself, you don't get bogged down with the focus...more

Karina's Review:

I give this book a 4/5 feathers. It’s a cute book and it’s very well written. Great to get your mind off things with.

I was absolutely amazed at how well written this book was. Reading the title made me think it was a little girl book. I loved how the beginning portrayed the relationship between Daphne and Vi.

The author did such a good job in making it all seem so real by tying American history in with the “witch” history. Lyla seemed a little stuck up to me and Daphne was a l...more

To say the least, I was intrigued by the summary. Witches? I love medieval history (regardless of whether I got good grades or not) and funnily enough, the topic for one of my most recent projects was on witchcraft! But in Daphne Downing's world, witchcraft is not about cackling laughter and brewing boiling green slime. I love the world Robert Shields created for this book! It put a nice twist to history as we know it today. I was excited to learn about the witch societies worked and the signifi...more

2.5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I really love the ideas and concepts behind the book. Magic and witchcraft is described in a way that I have never heard before, which was a nice change. I particularly like the idea behind who gets to be witches and why some people aren't.

I feel like the story could have been done better. There were parts that I would zone out during, particularly the history part where Daphne was reading the magic book, but that could have been d...more

Daphne and the Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society by Robert Shields
★★★★☆

Daphne and Vivica (Vi) were always enemies. Vi was always cruel to Daphne, and one day she slipped up and used witchcraft on her. Daphne was shocked, and decided if someone as awful as Vi could do witchcraft, then she should be able to do it also. This is when she discovers her best friend is also a witch, and that witchcraft is not what she expected. It is all based off of physics, and every woman has the potential to...more

Daphne and the Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society (Daphne & from now on) is a fantasy-esque novel that follows in the vein of Harry Potter and Diana Wynne Jones. In this alternate world magic is something that all women have the capacity to perform, yet if they don’t recognise it early in life they grow up to be regular magic-less human beings. Unlike Harry Potter, magic in Daphne & isn’t really magic, it’s really a manipulation of physics. Essentially, young girls and trained adul...more

Daphne and The Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society is a funny and interesting look at high school life. Daphne discovers all of the girls at her school (which doesn't seem to be very big) are witches - also known as physicists because they manipulate the physical world. Even though she is coming into the world of witchcraft late in life (almost too late), Daphne seems to have an uncanny proficiency for slinging spells. She now has to navigate her way through this minefield of high school po...more

My Thoughts: So at first I thought this book wasn't written very well and couldn't seem to get into it. It went slow at first, and then as soon as you find out that she's a witch and all the cool things about the witches that Shields has created, you're like, "Woah! This is so cool and original!"

I really liked the idea of every girl being a witch, they just had to figure out how to use their powers through understanding physics. I also loved how there were charmers, and spiters and branches of w...more

When I first read the synopsis of this book I was really intrigued. I had high hope that I would like this and was excited to read it. I like the idea that their witchcraft is a different form of physics and was eager to see how that worked.

The book starts off using the ‘B’ word. I feel this book target audience is preteen and to see language like this is a real turn off for me. The writing was a bit formal and one dimensional. I didn’t feel any real emotion from the character and I couldn’t dev...more

Don’t be discouraged by the long title this book is really entertaining! This I have to say is the first book I’ve read about young witches and its really cool. There’s so many fun and interesting characters and you just cant stop turning pages!

My favorite character was Daphne who is obviously the main character. She’s just a young girl who get’s picked on really bad by the bully in this case Vi. I loved it when she learned about her powers and she started kicking butt! I’m actually hoping that...more

When I was introduced to Daphne and the Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society by author Robert Shields himself, I was immediately interested. First of all, whew! What a mouthful of a title. Ha, ha, ha! Although the cover didn’t catch my attention, reading the synopsis and seeing that it’s about “witches” peaked up my curiosity.

The concept of being a witch and mixing the idea of having supernatural abilities through advanced physics and not really “magic” was very unique. But reading the book...more

Daphne and her nemesis Vi have been feuding for years. One day in the bathroom Daphne discovers that Vi is a witch. She also discovers that she herself is also a witch.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked that witchcraft is explained as another way to do physics. I like that all girls have the potential to be a witch.

I like that Daphne stayed true to herself. She didn't unquestioningly follow what the witches said and stood for what she believed to be right.

This was a fun book to read. I'...more
