I struggled hard with just how to rate "Blood Magic" by Jennifer Lyon. On the plus side, she managed to come up with a new twist on witches using a fusion of mythology, lore, and witchcraft. On the minus side, the writing wasn't as tight as I like and the story seemed to 'hop and jump' for me. So I decided to round up in the hope that the next in this series, which I DO intend to read, will sharpen and smooth out some of the rough edges I found here.

I didn’t like the causes of conflict. Some parts were a little slow, too much thinking not enough action.

STORY BRIEF:
Some witches wanted more power and linked with demons to get it. They became demon witches. Demon witches harmed humans, so wing slayers were created to kill the demon witches. Thirty years ago, a few demon witches cursed regular witches and wing slayers. The result was that regular witches’ powers were reduced because they could not have familiars (their animal helpers). Also, wing slayers became like drug addicts craving witch blood on their skin, but not drinking it like vampires. However, if a wing slayer killed any regular or demon witch, he became a rogue. When a rogue died, his soul would wander eternity in an undesirable place.

A demon witch, Linette, put a curse on Hannah, a human. Hannah will die unless another witch removes the curse or someone kills Linette before the next full moon. Axel is a wing slayer and Hannah’s brother. He believes Darcy may be able to remove the curse. If she cannot, Axel is prepared to kill Linette, become a rogue and lose his soul. 26-year old Darcy was adopted as a baby and never knew she was a witch. All of a sudden rogues are attacking her. Axel takes her to his hidden home and tells her she is a witch. She must learn a lifetime of magic in less than two weeks in order to help Hannah.

This book is the first in a series. The second book “Soul Magic” is about Sutton, another wing slayer.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Most of the story is Darcy trying to learn and gain witch powers. She’s having difficulty, and it takes a long time. Parts of the story are repetitive, talking about the problems and worrying about solving them. I would have preferred less pondering and more action. A few times, I wanted the story to be over. Every story needs conflict between the hero and heroine, but I didn’t enjoy their conflict in this story. It wasn’t logical. I describe it in Spoilers below.

The plot reminded me of parts of Harry Potter and Twilight. Darcy the witch was placed with a human family to save her from an evil rogue, and she didn’t learn she was a witch until she was an adult. The wing slayers are like the Twilight vampires, craving witch blood but having to restrain themselves. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, it’s ok with me to use these ideas. I’m just pointing out that as I read the book, I was thinking about the similarities.

A unique paranormal world of winged guardians, witches and demons. I loved the main couple of Axel and Darcy. I easily connected with them and they're relationship was incredibly hot, but the secondary characters were intriguing as well. I’m not a romance kind of guy. I had just finished reading a couple of books dealing with magic/fantasy and really enjoyed them and was hoping to find another good read. I stumbled across Jennifer Lyon’s book “Blood Magic - Wing Slayer Hunters, #1”. The first chapter looked good and I decided to give it a whorl.

I enjoyed this story and at times, had a hart time putting it down and couldn't wait to see what happened next; but there were other times where the story became very predictable. I wasn't sure how to rate this book, so I settled for 2 stars in the sense "it was an OK read, but nothing special". The author takes a lot of time to actually explain the rules of her universe, and it was really confusing at times. There was at least one sex scene too many, taking space that could have been used to further flesh out the characters, or the universe.

The way things went, I couldn't tell you much about the characters beyond the superficial - any of them, even the hero and the heroine. Let's see, she is a witch, adopted, with some family issues. She cares about people, she is everything that is pure and light, and all that crap. The hero, on the other hand, is the brooding alpha male, who is the leader of this group of warriors that fight Rogues (who are hairless, feminine, and smell like copper ~~*cough*lessers*cough*~~). Think Wrath from the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, while Darcy, the heroine of this book, is like almost every heroine in a Carpathian novel. The hero and the heroine are "soul-mirrors", two halves of the same soul. In other words, soulmates. Basically, the author takes all of the romance shortcuts wherever she can. I felt like I never got to know the main characters, to really see inside them. Or maybe I just thought they were boring.

The Big Misunderstanding was sad, in the sense that hero becomes a tool for no other reason than the author's strange need to prove that most of her characters are stupid... Also, we meet the mysterious ~~Scribe Virgin~~ Wing Slayer. There were several points where I thought the story should have ended. Probably because there were some filler scenes. Now, I understand that this was the first book in the series, and these are hardly ever perfect, but it's not like this was the author's first book ever. She has several novels written under a different name, so... I don't know if I can chalk up all the wrinkles in the book to it being a debut, etc.

What I've written so far may sound a bit harsh (understatement), but not everything was bad. Yes, there were cliches, tropes, derivative elements, etc. The clunky "edgy" names especially irritated me. However, there were some good things, too. The witch stuff was interesting, and the wings were cool. I could see where the author actually thought things through, and she tried to get magic-related things right. Also, she can write good action scenes. These good parts gave me hope that her writing has improved in the following books. Maybe I will read them, after all.(less)

What the...? My main hang up about this book was that the hero and his merry band of knife wielding warriors is that they were complacent about rogues killing ALL witches! Not only demon ones but the good ones too. The hero has witnessed his father killing witches when he was 14 and hasn't done a thing to stop him! Plus the fact his father is a threat to his own family. I just can't get past that, they were hanging onto their souls by doing nothing. They even allowed rogues into their nightclub!...more

I was excited to read something about a different aspect of the paranormal (versus the werewolf and vampire). Although I can only take so much when it comes to references about chakras (why the Alyson Noel Immortal Series took a serious turn for the worse at book 4). Luckily, the mysticism behind it all was limited.

The curse that set this whole book up threw me though. First, why would there be witch hunters in the first place - maybe it was a terminology thing, but if the original purpose of the witch hunters was to protect them, why were they called "witch hunters" from the beginning? I also am a little tired of feeling like the authors in this genre simply steal from one another. Shades doomed to walk the earth without their souls and that would be terribly painful - we haven't seen that too often (she says sarcastically). And a curse that requires sex to take the edge off (again... in law school plagiarism was an offense punishable by keel hauling. Ok, I exaggerate. But only a little. But I have felt lately while reading this genre that I am getting a course in how to plagiarize.)

And then there are the tattoos. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em (even have some ink myself), but why is it in this genre the tattoos are always sort of alive? Who is this tattoo artist, and how do I get an appointment, so that I can get some ink with magical properties?

And then back to the curse itself. Why would demon witches want to curse the hunters so that all other witches were killed. From a plot perspective, this wasn't really ever explained so that I totally understood it. I had to give up on the understanding and just go with it. And I hate it when I need to do that - totally sucks some of the enjoyment out of reading books like that. When the plot isn't carefully enough planned for me to understand and carry that forward and start to have little "ah-ha!" moments while reading, I feel gipped. And while I love a good mystery - even one that crosses multiple books in a series - what the heck made a witch a demon witch, wasn't really integral to the plot and could have been explained much earlier. Then I wouldn't have felt so disappointed when I found out (my thought was "that's it? Is that really what I have been waiting to find out?").

Finally, while I know there is another book after this, I am wondering how far this series will go. I like the serial para-romance stuff. Seems like we could get a number of books out of this - Sutton, Key, Ram and others (maybe there will be more to Joe too, in a sort of Butch/JR Ward kinda way). Maybe some of my complaints are really a reflection of my inability to find any info if this book will go beyond a 2-parter and much of it was a set up for the next book(s). For example, we get the sense that the demon Asmodeus is really important - he was involved in the spell gone wrong and the curse, but we see a door literally shut him out at the end and then the focus is put back on Quinn and Reed (sorry, 2 big-wig rogue witch hunters) and we hear no more about him. That was sort of a let down as there is a lot of paranormal possibility in his involvement. But again, maybe that's for later books.

On the positive note, I liked the idea of the Wing Slayer (tempered by the notion I mentioned earlier about needing hunters - or slayers - who are supposed to protect the witches) and the tapestry and the lore about how a witch gets her spells was interesting. It was fun to see the "Crone" manipulate technology and Eve and Hannah were great additional characters. I will read the next one, but will be hoping for a little more planning with the plot and hope that if the next is the last, I feel a little more satisfied. Finally, turning to the heart of this genre - the steaminess (I think I need to create my own scale for my reviews of these books...) was good. It was a little repetitive at times - taking away from how steamy it could have been. But it was enough to make me a little pink in the cheeks at times. So - good, but not really juicy. It was also a really quick read - 4 hours - for those that are looking for something light and quick, with some semi-steamy scenes.

I wasn't very sure about this book at first. I picked it up and, since the title was Blood Magic, I nearly put it back down again, thinking it was going to be yet another vampire story. And the blurb on the back didn't exactly help matters.

I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. Something I could recommend to readers looking for a comparison to The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I am so glad I found it! I wish I hadn't left it in my TBR for so long.
Warning for those who don't enjoy graphic sex scenes this may not be the book for you.

I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish this one and can't wait to go out and get the next one.

It was a bit of a struggle for me to rate this book because on the one hand, it proved to be an interesting introduction into a series that could be amazing, but on the other hand, the writing was all so hodge podge that I kept getting lost!

This traumatic event coincides with Axel dropping in to kidnap her so she can cast a spell to cure his little sister. That’s a bad freakin’ night. Darcy suddenly finds herself trapped in a world she knows nothing about but feels compelled to understand. After all, a little girl’s life is on the line. Oh, and then there’s Axel, the guy who kidnapped her and who she is uncontrollably attracted to. In a few short days Darcy’s life is turned upside down. With very few stutter-steps, Darcy accepts every challenge, even the role of soul-mirror to her kidnapper; this last part is perhaps the biggest challenge of all.

Lyon had a lot of ground to cover in this first book: she introduces all the major characters, the long-term plot line, and the more immediate plot line associated with this particular book. That’s a tall order and Lyon does a decent job of covering everything. She is not only establishing a whole new cast of characters, all with their own drama and dilemmas, but also a whole new history to go along with the characters and the long-term plot line. Initially the history is a bit convoluted but eventually straightens out and makes perfect sense. This is done primarily through a ton of action, dirty awesome sex, and great dialogue. Lyon’s writing style is smooth, the plot is fast-paced, and the characters are intriguing.

Darcy had never fit in she always knew she was different but tried to be as normal as possible because her adopted father told her she was evil. Well it turns out Darcy isn’t normal at all she indeed an earth witch and she could possibly be the very most important and powerful one though she has never known it. After a series of confusing and terrifying events she finds herself prisoner in a witch hunter’s house. He has been cursed just like all the other hunters with a terrible bloodlust for witch’s blood but Axel and his men are determined not to go rogue and have dedicated their lives to protecting earth witches and killing rogues. Now Axel has run into a problem his four year old sister, Hannah has been cursed with the death mark and will die soon if they cannot get a earth witch to remove the spell. This is where Darcy comes in; Axel kidnapped her and is depending on her to save Hannah.
Darcy has no idea where to even start considering she didn’t even know she was a witch but after seeing Hannah, she realizes she cannot walk away and let a poor little innocent girl die; she has to at least try. She begins to work on her witchcraft and she and Axel realize that they are in the fight of their lives, in more ways than one.
Axel and Darcy have such a heavy lethal attraction to each other and soon begin to realize they need each other and can help each other more than they ever could have imagined. Besides the story of Darcy and Axel there are plenty of other characters that play their own parts in the story, each one is important and I really love the aspect of that. There is no meaningless character in this book.
It is such a compelling and powerful story, just when you think everything is going to be ok, their world gets flipped upside down again. The whole time I was reading I was just waiting for Axel to take Darcy into his arms and overcome the curse but I never ever saw the ending coming. That is a rare talent, to completely throw the reader off throughout the book. ‘Blood Magic’ was such a captivating, thrilling story, with unforgettable characters that you won’t forget and it will leave you craving the next book. I give it five stars!

I have heard so many good things about this series and author.

I really like the unique twist to Lyon's witches - that you have your good (nature) witches who believe in harming none and then you have your bad witches who are tainted by the demon and are intent on doing harm.

Then there is freshness and uniqueness of the Wing Slayers. As you read Blood Magic, it is evident that Lyon flushed out her world with thought and intricate detail.

This series caught my eye when I was on Amazon a few months ago, looking for something new to read. When Border's was having it's Going Out Of Business sale I used the opportunity to buy series that I haven't read, but wanted to. The Wing Slayer Hunter series was one of them.

GOOD LORD THE CHAKRAS.

Gave it two stars because I didn't HATE it, but Lord it was a chore to read. Only finished it because I paid 10 bucks for the thing. Convoluted and it gave me the impression that the author was making up theories as she went along to keep the plot going. Honestly, this concept has just been done so many times that for anything new on the scene to make its mark, it has to be outstanding. For me, Blood Magic didn't even manage to be good. It started out so unbelievably slow that the end felt rushed as a result. This is only the 2nd witch based paranormal romance that I have ever enjoyed. The other was Anya Bast's Elemental Witches. This author has found a good niche with this series. I read this book in one sitting; I didn't even put my nook down to eat dinner. After the first chapter I downloaded the second book, Soul Magic, because I knew that the moment I was finished with this book I would want to move straight into the next installment.

This book was so full of world building, that it drug on for me. I can see that it will be a great series, so I stuck it out. It was really great otherwise.
