This novella takes place at the same time as Andrea’s book, right after MAGIC SLAYS, and the two stories intersect.

A dinner date after a hard day at work sounds heavenly. Of course, when that date is between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels, things don’t go as planned. Before you know it, undead are running amok, heads are being chopped off, lawyers are deployed and used wi...more

I love Kate.

I love Curran.

I love Kate + Curran.

They should make fuzzy necromatic shifter babies. I’d totally babysit those adorable little psychos. And I wouldn’t even check out Curran’s ass (blatant lie is blatant).

Hmmm…I wonder if Saiman is seeing anyone. Don’t tell me you haven’t been tempted. He’s like the long lost older brother of The Wonder Twins.

Please note that this review is wrote with extreme prejudice, one; because it was free, and who doesn't automatically loooove a free book? And two; this is a Kate Daniel's book and I am a complete fangirl, I actually let out an extremely uncool little shriek and did a little dance when I saw this, and the third and perhaps most important thing, Curran's in it. Naked. Nuff said.

This is a short story involving, Kate, Curran and a small boy who has is slowly being suffocated by a gold necklace. Ka...more

Huge thank you to Ilona Andrews for this great Christmas gift! (Ilona Andrews posted this for free for several weeks over Christmas) This was a fun read, with my favorite characters -- what more could a rabid faithful fan ask for? I am routinely surprised at how great the team behind Ilona Andrews is and how great the team of Ilona Andrews treats their fans. I loved this story. We don't get a Kate and Curran book this year (2012) but, we have this sweet and fun novella. And well -- did I mention...more

It was Free.
It has Kate and Curran.
Naked Curran.
Clip-board throwing Jim.--I love Kate's Christmas gift idea for him next year *giggles*
It has Vikings!
It has Magic!
Ghastek was funny. I liked the vampires in this one (OK, not LIKED, but they were interesting and covered in skittle colors of sunblock *dies*)
They need to save a little boy from death

We walked inside the mead hall. The vampire, shapeshifters, the dog, and the lion man followed me.

This is why I love Kate Daniels so much.

“Enough," Curran said. An unmistakable command saturated his voice. Jim clicked his mouth shut. I crossed my arms. "I'm sorry, is this the part where I fall to my knees and shiver in fear, Your Furriness? Silly me, I didn't get the memo.”

MAGIC GIFTSis my basically my Kate and Curran fix til the next full length Kate and Curran book comes back in 2013. This will be hard and much torture for me to wait that long. I don't know how I'll do it, but I was extremely happy to have MAGIC GIFTSfor Christ...more

Magic Gifts – there’s Naked Curran…’nuff said

So now that I have your attention…

There IS naked Curran, but there’s always more to say when it comes to a Kate Daniels story. I initially didn’t even read the synopsis because Kate gets an insta-click. The cover is really cool, making me wonder if covers for future novels are in for a style change.

This story takes place after Magic Slays (Book 5) and runs simultaneously with Andrea’s upcoming novel, Gunmetal Magic. Kate and Curran just can’t seem to...more

LOVED IT!!
The story starts out with Curran and Kate going out on a dinner date... but as fate would have it and Curran and Kate.. well being Curran and Kate dinner turns into an event involving Vampires, Mages, Shape-shifters, and wait for it ...VIKINGS. That's right Vikings with the mead, axes, and a massive brawl.
Of course we can't forget the politics that always follow Curran and Kate with Curran being the Beast Lord, and Kate his Consort. Even though all they want to do is solve their probl...more

This.was.sooo.good!! As a big fan of Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series I fell again for the wonderful characters, the fantastic worldbuilding and of course the humour...mmmhm, I think I'll need a quote to sum it all up:

<"And how did your day go?" I asked Ascanio. He turned to me, a dreamy look on his pretty face. "We killed things. There was blood. Fountains of blood. And then we had barbecue." Why me?>

Thank you so much for this awesome novella!

Good for a novella, but because it was a Kate Daniels novella I couldn't help but want more, more, more. Kate and Curran were their usual awesome selfs, and I loved the insight in their relationship.

HOWEVER. After Magic Slays I'm really worried about Julie, and I hated that she made a short appearance here, because nothing was mentioned about the situation. I'd rather hadn't had her show up then.

HOWEVER² The mercenary thing was great, but I simply didn't get the whole problem with Jim, and why K...more

This story is a present the authors released in time for Christmas which to me says alot about the authors and how they appreciate their fans.

Magic Gifts is a bridge between Magic Slays (Kate Daniels #5) and Gunmetal Magic which is Andrea's book and releases during the summer of 2012.

What starts out as a first of it's kind date between Curran and Kate, quickly spirals out of control when a vampire navigator who works for the People is killed by a gold nec...more

Very nice.

I just have to give kudos to the Ilona Andrews team for respecting their fan base. I mean, seriously, they gave us a present! How cool is that? A free download adventure in the Kate and Curran world. In these times of authors-gone-wild, it's nice to know that the authors I love are in touch with what it means to foster goodwill on the web.

First of all, they are aware that we are foaming at the mouth for Kate's next installment. We have to live with the knowledge that we won't get more...more

Fun! Thank you Ilona Andrews for the gift of Curran and Kate for Christmas.

This short story has a lot going on - vampires, magical necklaces, weres, vikings, pack politics, and a draugr.

Favorite line:

"Some men get excited by white lace and a translucent negligee. My love muffin got excited by a woman dressed to murder."

Oh, Curran!

Can't wait for Andrea's book!

*sigh* I swear, Ilona Andrews could write a Kate Daniels #106 and I'd STILL pick it up. Heck, she could write a Kate Daniels #5.12 and #5.22 and #5.32 and I'd pick all of them up in a heartbeat as well. LOVE. So much love for this series. <33

An attempt at an actual date works out every bit as well as you'd imagine for Kate Daniels magical troubleshooter (aka trouble magnet) and her mate the Curran the Beast Lord of Atlanta.

Magic Gifts is a great little slice of the Kate Daniels series with just a quick little tease for their upcoming Andrea spin off series starter, Gunmetal Magic. For those who follow the authors' blog, the opening scene and a Jim moment later on have been shared as snippets, but the story that surrounds it makes it...more

Big love to Ilona Andrews for creating and sharing this Kate Daniels novella as a Christmas gift to fans.

The story runs concurrently with Gunmetal Magic, the Andrea-centered novel coming out next year... and contains some teaser/ mini-plot spoilers as a result. It follows Kate and Curran as they attempt a dinner date in the city. But everything goes to hell when a woman is killed in the restaurant. And they're pulled in further when the metal necklace that killed her, is placed around a child's...more

If I was disappointed that 2012 did not mark the publication of a new Kate Daniels installment, it was largely stymied by the action-packed fun of Magic Gifts, which certainly takes the cake as my favorite of the Kate novellas to date.

Curran drops by Cutting Edge with the suggestion to treat Kate to a night out–a real dinner date of the sort they don’t really have. She should have realized it would never be a normal night, as it quickly descends into chaos as two navigators lose control of their...more

The story starts out with Kate and Curran going out on a date and wouldn't you know it? Here comes trouble. But in true Kate and Curran style, they take care of business.

I loved how this story played out. The funny, snarky lines between Kate and Curran never fail to make me smile and even though you're always wanting them to have more alone time, their adventures are so intriguing. The story line was so involved and I enjoyed having a lot of our favorite characters included.

There is something about this series that just makes me smile. I maybe don’t laugh out loud a lot during them but I definitely smile most of the way through.

This was a fun side story involving Kate and Curran working together to solve a few problems involving a life sucking necklace, vampires run amuck, guild wars, Drunken Vikings and trying to have a normal night out. I love these two together working as a team their dialog with each other is so fun and Illona and Andrews stole my heart when t...more

A free novella.
Kate and Curran go on a date to a restaurant, chaos ensues.
Loved Kate and Curran. Jim was pretty great too.
There was a sneak peek of Andrea and Raphael's story and it pissed me off. Raphael is such a douche.

**NOTE: this novella is only available at Ilona Andrews web site (http://www.ilona-andrews.com/magic-gi... ) for (a little less than) 2 weeks. Then it will be printed as a bonus in the back of Gunmetal Magic**

A Kate novella that takes place around the same time as Gunmetal Magic (the Andrea book out late spring/summer).

It would make me feel better. "I could always do it you way instead."
Curran raised his blond eyebrows.

A shadow of self-satisfaction flickered on his face and vanished, replaced by innocence. "That's bullshit. I'm perfectly reasonable and I almost never roar. I don't even remember what it feels like to knock some he...more

Magic Gifts was a bonus short attached to Gunmetal Magic. A fabulous, action packed novella by the writing team of Ilona and Andrew.

Kate and Curran go out on a date only to have it interrupted by two necromancers from the People. It seems that they are on a date as well and when the young lady clamps a gifted necklace around her neck it strangles her to death. So distraught by the loss of his girlfriend male companion looses control of the two vampires chained outside the restaurant. Kate and C...more

I am not normally a fan of novellas. I usually need length to feel satisfied. So many novellas leave you feeling like you just had a small nibble from a teensy snack tray.

But I have to give it up to Ilona Andrews. In all their novellas I have read Silver Shark, Silent Blade and this one as well, I feel like they manage to pack a LOT of story in a little book. And while I don't feel 100% full, I at least feel like I had a really meaty appetizer that will tide me over til the full course is ready...more

I don't know how they keep on churning out first-class stories like this one, but Ilona Andrews hasn't missed yet as far as Kate & Curran are concerned. Hilarious, action-packed and chock-full of interesting people and mythology (this time it's Norse) -- a total winner. Plus it was a FREE gift! Those two are doing more than a few things right.

BTW - *So* pumped for GUNMETAL MAGIC.

“He grinned. "You're jealous."
I considered it. "No. But when you stared at that woman like she was made of diamonds, it didn't feel very good."
"I stared at her because she smelled strange."
"Strange how?"
"She smelled like rock dust. Very strong dry smell." Curran put his arms around me. "I love it when you get all fussy and possessive."
"I never get fussy and possessive."
He grinned, showing his teeth. His face was practically glowing. "So you're cool if I go over and chat her up?"
"Sure. Are you cool if I go and chat up that sexy werewolf on the third floor?"
He went from casual and funny to deadly serious in half a blink. "What sexy werewolf?"
I laughed.
Curran's eyes focused. He was concentrating on something.
"You're taking a mental inventory of all people working on the third floor, aren't you?"
His expression went blank. I'd hit the nail on the head.
I slid off him and put my head on his biceps. The shaggy carpet was nice and comfortable under my back.
"Is it Jordan?"
"I just picked a random floor," I told him. "You're nuts, you know that?"
He put his arm around me. "Look who is talking.”

“Tall, with skin the color of rich coffee, and dressed all in black, Jim looked like he was carved from a block of solid muscle. Logic said that at some point he must've been a baby and then a child, but looking at him one was almost convinced that some deity touched the ground with its scepter and proclaimed, "There shall be a badass," and Jim sprung into existence, fully formed, complete with clothes, and ready for action.” 97 likes
