Available as FREE download from Ilona Andrews Website for 2 weeks from Christmas Day, this novella takes place at the same time as Andrea’s book, right after MAGIC SLAYS, and the two stories intersect.

A dinner date after a hard day at work sounds heavenly. Of course, when that date is between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels, things don’t go as planned. Before you know it,...more

Please note that this review is wrote with extreme prejudice, one; because it was free, and who doesn't automatically loooove a free book? And two; this is a Kate Daniel's book and I am a complete fangirl, I actually let out an extremely uncool little shriek and did a little dance when I saw this, and the third and perhaps most important thing, Curran's in it. Naked. Nuff said.

This is a short story involving, Kate, Curran and a small boy who has is slowly being suffocated by a gold necklace. Ka...more

LOVED IT!!
The story starts out with Curran and Kate going out on a dinner date... but as fate would have it and Curran and Kate.. well being Curran and Kate dinner turns into an event involving Vampires, Mages, Shape-shifters, and wait for it ...VIKINGS. That's right Vikings with the mead, axes, and a massive brawl.
Of course we can't forget the politics that always follow Curran and Kate with Curran being the Beast Lord, and Kate his Consort. Even though all they want to do is solve their probl...more

I am not normally a fan of novellas. I usually need length to feel satisfied. So many novellas leave you feeling like you just had a small nibble from a teensy snack tray.

But I have to give it up to Ilona Andrews. In all their novellas I have read Silver Shark, Silent Blade and this one as well, I feel like they manage to pack a LOT of story in a little book. And while I don't feel 100% full, I at least feel like I had a really meaty appetizer that will tide me over til the full course is ready...more

Good for a novella, but because it was a Kate Daniels novella I couldn't help but want more, more, more. Kate and Curran were their usual awesome selfs, and I loved the insight in their relationship.

HOWEVER. After Magic Slays I'm really worried about Julie, and I hated that she made a short appearance here, because nothing was mentioned about the situation. I'd rather hadn't had her show up then.

HOWEVER² The mercenary thing was great, but I simply didn't get the whole problem with Jim, and why K...more

Huge thank you to Ilona Andrews for this great Christmas gift! (Ilona Andrews posted this for free for several weeks over Christmas) This was a fun read, with my favorite characters -- what more could a rabid faithful fan ask for? I am routinely surprised at how great the team behind Ilona Andrews is and how great the team of Ilona Andrews treats their fans. I loved this story. We don't get a Kate and Curran book this year (2012) but, we have this sweet and fun novella. And well -- did I mention...more

This.was.sooo.good!! As a big fan of Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series I fell again for the wonderful characters, the fantastic worldbuilding and of course the humour...mmmhm, I think I'll need a quote to sum it all up:

<"And how did your day go?" I asked Ascanio. He turned to me, a dreamy look on his pretty face. "We killed things. There was blood. Fountains of blood. And then we had barbecue." Why me?>

Thank you so much for this awesome novella!

Funny banter; and an intimate inside view of Curran and Kate’s life. No one but Kate can go on a date with her mate and get into that much trouble. The Vikings were hilarious, especially Dagfinn; it was like a Shelly Laurenston version of Vikings, and a funny addition to the story. There were lots of handy reminders of the various players and plot points in the series, but still managed to pack in a surprisingly good original ss. Much longer and contained more depth to the story than I would hav...more

This story is a present the authors released in time for Christmas which to me says alot about the authors and how they appreciate their fans.

Magic Gifts is a bridge between Magic Slays (Kate Daniels #5) and Gunmetal Magic which is Andrea's book and releases during the summer of 2012.

What starts out as a first of it's kind date between Curran and Kate, quickly spirals out of control when a vampire navigator who works for the People is killed by a gold nec...more

Oh Ilona Andrews, did you know how the two of you just made my Christmas so awesome? Thank you so much for this free Kate Daniels novella. :) Magic Gifts is set shortly after Magic Slays , and it starts with a dinner date between the Beast Lord Curran and Kate. Of course, the chance of normalcy is slim as some moments after their date has started, heads started to roll -- literally. Soon, Kate and Curran and everyone else is fighting to save a boy's life, running...more

This was such a tease, but a great tease!! I loved getting an entire story about Kate and Curran since the next book is going to focus on Andrea and Raphael. We got such a great glimpse into more of their personal lives (away from the pack, from the People, from everyone).

The plot was pretty good. I liked the back story, a...more

LOVED it!

The dialog, as always with an Ilona Andrews book, is superb. The action was well paced and you also see some good character growth from Kate (a bonus since a novella isn't usually about character growth so much as it is a short adventure).

This was a great gift to fans of this writing duo and frankly a damn good short story. If you missed out on this very lovely gift, hopefully when Andrea's book comes out you can buy it as an ebook. Trust me, it is worth it!

Fun! Thank you Ilona Andrews for the gift of Curran and Kate for Christmas.

This short story has a lot going on - vampires, magical necklaces, weres, vikings, pack politics, and a draugr.

Favorite line:

"Some men get excited by white lace and a translucent negligee. My love muffin got excited by a woman dressed to murder."

Oh, Curran!

Can't wait for Andrea's book!

Favorite quote:
"Mhm, Kate, the chief of security. Sexy. Who better to guard my body than the woman who owns it?"

"Curran, I will punch you."

"Rough play." Curran pretended to shiver in excitement.

I raised my fist and tapped his biceps lightly.

Curran and Kate remain one of my favorite fictional couples. I honestly don't think I could ever get tired of reading about them. I love that this wasn't a throwaway novella (not that those aren't fun), as in it had substance and added something to overall...more

MERRY CHRISTMAS! And thank you for the lovely gift, Ilona Andrews!

Magic Gifts is basically what Kate and Curran are doing during Gunmetal Magic. I am glad that the authors wrote this, because they were conspicuously absent when the world was almost destroyed by an ancient Egyptian god. It starts out with Kate and Curran on a date.
They go to a restaurant that has two vampires outside which means there are two journeymen inside eating. A lot of drama goes down immediately at the restaurant and results in Kate and Curran racing the magic/tech shifts to save a li...more

This story was included in the print copy of Gunmetal magic, Andrea’s story, but deserves a review of its own. The events occur along the same time line, but this is Kate’s pov - what is Kate up to while Andrea is busy?

Kate and Curran have a rare date at a real restaurant. Of course, with them that will be anything but simple. At another table in the restaurant, a gift turns feral. The necklace chokes the girl to death. Tragic enough but if she and her date were controlling vampires parked outsi...more

Magic Gifts was a bonus short attached to Gunmetal Magic. A fabulous, action packed novella by the writing team of Ilona and Andrew.

Kate and Curran go out on a date only to have it interrupted by two necromancers from the People. It seems that they are on a date as well and when the young lady clamps a gifted necklace around her neck it strangles her to death. So distraught by the loss of his girlfriend male companion looses control of the two vampires chained outside the restaurant. Kate and C...more

It is difficult to write a review about an Ilona Andrews novel without sounding repetitve. All you can say are accolades like wonderful, marveling, exciting, and action packed. Although "Magic Gifts" is a novella, all of the praise still holds true. In short, I just love these characters and this series.

Kate has been avoiding a conversation with the Alpha head of security, Jim. She knows that he wants her to mediate a dispute between members of the mercenary guild. So, what does she do? She goes...more

OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: Magic Gifts is the Kate and Curran novella that runs in tandem with the events of Gunmetal Magic. It can be read either as a companion story as well as a solo one, the choice is upon the reader. The novella was distributed free by the authors and is now combined in the paperback version of Gunmetal Magic . The novella is about 110-odd pages and features Kate as its sole narrator.

The story opens with Kate and Curran arriving in th...more

Magic Gifts—a Novella in the Kate Daniels universe by Ilona Andrews
This is yet another reason I truly love Ilona Andrews. For Christmas, as a thank you to their fans, Andrews released a free e-book novella download from the website. “Magic Gifts” fills the time period after Magic Slays and we are lead to understand runs somewhat parallel to the next book being published in this world Gunmetal Magic which will be from Andrea’s point of view. If you didn’t manage to snag a copy before they took it...more

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, Gordon and Ilona Andrews were kind enough to offer up a free short story to their readers. I would have read it immediately but the holidays are a busy time around my folks' place and I didn't have a chance to read it until just now.

Magic Gifts takes place right after Magic Slays (the fifth book in the series) and intersects with Gunmetal Magic, the upcoming Andrea book, which I am so very excited about. It's a great short story that focuses on Kate and Curran...more

Bloody hell! This is a brilliant free read! Even if it wasn’t free it’s still a worth a read. I remember reading the teaser for this way back when and was eager to know how this little number would play out and well.. it played out extremely well!
I actually read this on Christmas Day when I was full of cold and feeling sorry for myself and needed a little pick me up, Magic Gifts was the perfect thing to do just that. It was truly great to have some extra Kate and Curran time and see their little...more

This is by far my favorite series. I will read anything released in the Kate Daniels world. This is made even better by the fact that the authors have offered this for free for a limited time as a Christmas present to their fans!

This is a quick side story in the Kate Daniels world that follows Kate and Curran on an adventure after a memorable try at a dinner date.

I liked how this book is marketed as what is going on with Kate and Curran during Andrea's upcoming bookGunmetal Magic when it comes...more

This novella is a holiday gift from the authors to their readers, so get over there quickly! The 35,000 word novella takes place after Magic Slays and alongside the forthcoming GUNMETAL MAGIC, the next Kate Daniels book (and the latter is from Andrea's POV, so we have new worlds to explore!)

I don't want to give anything away, so let me say that it's from Kate's POV, and begins simply. Kate and Curran (The Beast Lord and now Kate's mate/husband/sweet babu) are going off for a date -- a simple, un...more

Another great read from the talented duo - Ilona Andrews. I love the Kate books. She's far from perfect and she struggles with work and family obligations, just like the rest of us. I'm glad she's finally with Curran as he brings out the best in her and she can now share her burdens with him. This story was quite amusing. I loved the snarky dialog between Jim and Kate. Andrea's snarky answers were hilarious too. I can't wait for Andrea's books.

This story was interesting because it shows how much...more

First, before I even start go ahead and scroll back up…awesome Urban Fantasy cover right?!?!

I don’t know about anyone else but I get in these moods sometime were I just want to read characters that I know and love. It’s like going to my mom's house and eating her cooking…it just makes me happy! I guess that’s a big reason I reread books I love, to revisit the characters I have grown to care so much about. So when I saw on the Ilona Andrews blog there was a new Kate Daniels novella with a shiny r...more

This novella was perfect. It was everything I hoped for in a Kate Daniels story. Lots of Kate and Curran moments and in a typical Ilona Andrews style, most of them involved one-liners that had me cracking up and holding my stomach.

'Magic Gifts' is set after 'Magic Strikes' and during 'Gunmetal Magic' (Andrea's book, the next to be released). Kate and Curran set off to have a romantic meal in a local restaurant and are in for a shocking surprise when danger and magic meet them there. (Kate just...more

“He grinned. "You're jealous."
I considered it. "No. But when you stared at that woman like she was made of diamonds, it didn't feel very good."
"I stared at her because she smelled strange."
"Strange how?"
"She smelled like rock dust. Very strong dry smell." Curran put his arms around me. "I love it when you get all fussy and possessive."
"I never get fussy and possessive."
He grinned, showing his teeth. His face was practically glowing. "So you're cool if I go over and chat her up?"
"Sure. Are you cool if I go and chat up that sexy werewolf on the third floor?"
He went from casual and funny to deadly serious in half a blink. "What sexy werewolf?"
I laughed.
Curran's eyes focused. He was concentrating on something.
"You're taking a mental inventory of all people working on the third floor, aren't you?"
His expression went blank. I'd hit the nail on the head.
I slid off him and put my head on his biceps. The shaggy carpet was nice and comfortable under my back.
"Is it Jordan?"
"I just picked a random floor," I told him. "You're nuts, you know that?"
He put his arm around me. "Look who is talking.”

“Tall, with skin the color of rich coffee, and dressed all in black, Jim looked like he was carved from a block of solid muscle. Logic said that at some point he must've been a baby and then a child, but looking at him one was almost convinced that some deity touched the ground with its scepter and proclaimed, "There shall be a badass," and Jim sprung into existence, fully formed, complete with clothes, and ready for action.” 70 people liked it
