The only reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is because it freaked me out a little. I'm not sure it is wise to read about every little disease, virus, and genetic abnormality that your baby could have before you give birth. Nevertheless, this is a GREAT reference for all things parenting in the first 2 years of a baby's life. I'm glad I read it so that in case anything should go wrong with my little one (heaven forbid!), I'll know where to start.

I needed a book that would answer all of my first-time-parent questions, even the "obvious" ones, and Baby 411 was perfect! Dr. Ari Brown, a practicing pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, wrote much of the book and *both* authors based their information and recommendations on solid, peer-reviewed, scientific evidence. They provide citations to back up their advice, lists of suggested books and websites, and appendices full of useful information. All of this is d...more
My pediatrician, that wonderful, wonderful woman, gave this to me on our first visit to her office. This is my go-to guide for information about pretty much everything. Chapter 7, for example, is all about sleep, and it summarizes every single published sleep method, saving you the trouble of tracking down multiple books to help you figure out which strategy works best for you and your baby. Care and feeding and developmental milestones are also well-covered. Information is clearly presented and...more
This book is a total must-have for new parents. We have referred to it so many times in the past 10 days since our baby was born. It covers every topic, in a good amount of detail. There are not a lot of pictures - it's just thick with information and references. It covers many different parenting theories and points you to other books as needed - for example, it reviews all the major "sleep theories". The section on when to call your pediatrician is soooo helpful as we have one parent (me) who...more
I am on the last chapter of this book so I will go ahead and review it now. A very good and easy to understand book about the child's first year. Our kid isn't here yet, but I think this book will be very helpful as a resource. The authors take a layman's approach to explaining everything so it's not too technical or overly medical (though they do use medical terms where necessary and they do a good job explaining them). I did have many moments reading this book in which I felt incredibly overwh...more
This book served its exact purpose -- it was the 411 on all things baby related. I felt a little information overloaded after reading it from start to finish and I've probably forgotten most of what I've read already, but it was a good basic overview and I think it will be a good reference book in the future. I specifically liked that the authors (1) included a pediatrician (who is also a mom); (2) presented information in a (mostly) neutral fashion and (usually) indicated when they were express...more
I approached the birth of our daughter with a very relaxed attitude thinking being uptight and reading too much would just freak me out. I so wish I would have read this before she was born (mainly because there isn't much time to read once baby arrives and you need answers!). The book answers tons of questions every new parent has and is filled with details and advice based on recommendations from the AAP. The only part of the book I take issue with is the sleep chapter. I just can't go along w...more
This was a hand-me-down that I wasn't expecting to be particularly helpful, but I was pleasantly surprised. This ended up being a pretty good overview of such varied topics as sleep, vaccines, and weaning. There are references included for the purposes of further research, and several really nice charts with information about developmental milestones, low-allergy foods to introduce, and recommended vaccine schedules. I can totally see it being a valuable resource to refer back to as the baby gro...more
This is the best baby book I have found so far. I really love how easy it is to find information. This book was so helpful, especially during the first few weeks of my baby's life. I got this book after getting recommendations from two pediatricians. Previously I had always been wary of baby books because it is hard to know who and what is credible, but I felt really good about all the info in this book. The newest edition was just released in September. I totally recommend this to any new mom.
I've read enough of this now to mark it as "read". I really don't intend to read through the whole doom and gloom section on rare illnesses. Much like Baby Bargains, it was helpful, but a bit sloppy and repetitive. It was hard for me to trust the authority of the contributing pediatrician when she has bad reviews from local parents. (I live in the area where she works, so came across info on her practice when I was researching pediatricians.) Nonetheless, I did refer to it many times and did tak...more
Truly is a 411 on babies for the first year. I definitely recommend this book for new moms (and dads). I've referred to this book more times than I can count and have rarely been disappointed. One of my favorite sections is a review they do on all the sleep books - it saved me from having to buy all of them. Really, after reading the summaries of all the books I felt like I knew what I needed to do to help my child sleep better.
This book was so easy to read! The organization of the book made it very easy for me to keep my focus and gave me the straightforward information I needed without boring me with technical junk. The book has so much information that I found myself highlighting parts that I wanted to make sure I could find later, and it helped answer questions I didn't even know I should be asking. I definitely recommend this to a new parent (and honestly, read it before the baby comes if you can!).
Wonderful parenting book! I love the practical approach the book offers. The authors encourage their readers to trust their parental instinct, but still point out things that should be obvious without condescension. Very well organized and easy to follow, we're offered a superb book that doesn't demand it's the be-all-end all. My absolute favorite part was their stance on vaccinations - GET THEM!
An ok book if you want an overview on everything you will possibly encounter in the first year of your baby's life. I ended up browsing through the book and reading what I felt would be most helpful. Personally, I prefer to read books that delve into more detail about things I want to know about instead of having a general overview. I felt like it was way too much information.
I appreciate the wealth of information in this book and the highly organized manner in which it is presented. It is definitely my go-to guide whenever I am questioning anything baby related. This is a great resource to have for all of those times when the pediatrician isn't available. I would recommend it to all new parents with the disclaimer that I find some of the advice a little too stringent. I cringe at the sight of 4-year-olds walking around the mall with pacifiers in their mouths as much...more
I regularly fantasized about setting this book on fire. The organization was great, but it seemed every time I looked there was chastisement for something or other, and a fair amount of me-me-me, it worked for me and so it must for everyone. It was a necessary reference for about six months, and then I decided I didn't need to deal with this tone anymore.
Standard fair as every other "Baby's 1st year"-type book, so I would say skip--except for 1 chapter. The chapter on sleep has a great summary and ratings of the basic baby sleep theories out there. Definitely worth the read of that chapter to save you reading all the sleep books--or at least only reading the one for your favorite theory.
Very helpful! Concise and yet comprehensive, this was the first baby overview book I read. It's still on the shelf by my bed. Interestingly, the pediatrician co-author, Ari Brown, was the first pediatrician to visit us in the hospital. I didn't realize, until after beginning the book, that she was the co-author of this well-known guide!

We got this book when we got our son. We were not expecting to adopt a newborn and this book was a great resource. It was small enough to fit in the diaper bag and the organization of the book made it easy to use as a reference when a new situation occurred. It is a great book when you need to know how to handle a baby quick.
This came recommended to me by a cousin who recently had her first baby in the midst of her pediatric residency--so you know it's good. I relied heavily on this in those first weeks of newborn-ness, and it's continued to be really useful. Also, as my cousin pointed out, the format is easily digestible for sleep-deprived and slightly crazed new parents.
My favorite baby "guidebook"! I look in this book all the time to find answers about what's going on with my kids! The author gives a lot of " insider" information (she's a pediatrician) about when you should or shouldn't take your kid into the doctor, and when the best time is to take them in etc. must have book!

This was the book recommended by my pediatrician. I thought it was very easy to read and covered all of my questions about baby in the first year. I will definitely want to go back and skim this book at 3, 6 and 9 months. It will also be a great reference for questions regarding illnesses.
All in all lot of information packed in one place, but some of the information was overload, especially for mamas who can get overwhelmed. I personally like to visit and discuss my parenting issues at places like www.thewomentalk.com where experienced as well as new moms hangout.
very informative and helpful. a must read and i'll definitely keep it close during the first year.

My son is now 3 months old and I am constantly looking up something in this book. I had issues breastfeeding early on and this was my first resource. I use it now more to see what I can look forward to developmentally and if there's anything I need to be working on with him. Right now bedtime and naptime routines are what we are focusing on. I find a lot of consistency with this book...more

I really liked this book. It is full of useful reference information, but written in a very readable, entertaining style. It's recent so the information is up to date and the authors indicate whether something is scientific fact or their opinions. I learned a lot and enjoyed doing so.

I found this better as an overall baby info book than what to Expect the First Year. The format of having all the information about a topic together would have been helpful at the beginning of my parenting career. Lots of great information that felt very reliable because the authors were very clear about being doctors. I found some good stuff in the sleep and discipline sections. However, I thought the authors were very strict on their ideas, which made me feel guilty when I was doing things dif...more
