McCormick Templeman (Goodreads Author)
"With swift pacing and sure-footed plotting, a conventional murder mystery laced with a touch of creepiness, and an honest portrayal of hormones outrunning hearts, this is sure to attract a broad fan base," declared The Bulletin in a starred review.

yeah, i just had fun reading this book.
there are a lot of two-star reviews of this book on here, and while i find myself agreeing with a lot of the criticisms of the book: the fact that is doesn't hide its secrets well, the baffling but obligatory love triangle(s), the uneven delivery of the two mystery-plots, the emphasis on the beautiful beautiful people... i don't know - it was just a really fun and fast read, and i freaking loved cally.
and it is not because she is punk rock in a sea of rich...more
An eerie setting, a boarding school, a few missing girls - where do I sign up? I love the idea of this book, the vibe throughout is mysterious and slightly creepy. Yeah, maybe it wasn't perfect, it needed better characterization and some things made the plot feel a bit discombobulated, but I had a good time.

I don't get it - Not because the book was confusing, but because I don't understand what the point was.
The book itself was very cliche. It's the same played-out storyline that the majority of young adult books nowadays use - the boarding school, the unresolved murder mystery, the hot boys and love triangles, the mean girls and BFFs and not knowing who your real friends are. But I was hoping this book would have its own personality, and it didn't.

I'm just gonna come right out and say it: I didn't like this book. There were too many characters, an easy mystery, a weird romance, and boring main character. None of it made any sense to me whatsoever. There was only one character that I liked (loved) but that's hardly a redemptive quality to fix an entire book.
First and foremost, the writing was ridonkulous. The narration was done by your typical seventeen year old girl, but then every once in a while there was a crazy, out of place SAT word...more

I literally could not put this book down. Whatever was on my to-do list had to wait a day and a half. Reminiscent of Donna Tartt's THE SECRET HISTORY both stylistically and thematically, THE LITTLE WOODS is a beautifully written, suspenseful, and deliciously disturbing story about a girl who enrolls at the boarding school where her sister allegedly died in a fire many years earlier, and soon finds herself at the center of a new, but parallel mystery that leads back to her past. Once Calista Wood...more
This is one author who has, with this title, completely blown adult suspense right out of the water.
The scene is a boarding school - one of those ritzy places that cater to the wealthy children who seem to want for nothing and only care about themselves. These are also the kids who have the power to bully someone they feel is ‘less’ than what they are on the ladder of success and popularity. But when they meet up with Cally Wood, an extremely intelligent and sarcastic girl who transfers during...more

I don’t often read thrillers or horror stories but once in a while I totally get an itch to read something scary. The Little Woods sounded like it would fit the bill. It turned out to be a quick easy read but unfortunately didn’t really satisfy my need for thriller and mystery.
I think maybe I have watched too many episodes of CSI and Law & Order in my lifetime because this is not the first novel I have read where I figured out “who did it” long before the end. Very early on it was easy to d...more

This book is another example of a brilliant premise being lost in execution. The idea of Cally going back to the school that held the secret behind the loss of her sister so many years earlier is enough to tantalize any reader almost to the point of involuntary salivation that would make Pavlov's dogs jealous; but before you go all hungry eyes and run off in search of a copy...there are a few things you should know.

I read this as a Netgalley ARC and was excited to find a YA mystery. I'm a fan of boarding school fiction, and the world created here seemed authentic - if a bit cliched, with the rich clique vs. everyone else...but of course, from what I recall from my Greek days at college, that kind of insulated environment IS cliched. I loved Cally's character - her no-frills, totally cerebral approach to life. And the pacing was great, both for the mystery and for how fast teen life seems to move at this st...more
The Little Woods by McCormick Templeman follows Cally who is new at St Bede's academy, the place where Cally's sister went missing years before. Cally finds out when she moves into her room that the girl whose bed she is sleeping in disappeared earlier in the year. Callie makes her way through the politics of private school dealing with friends, romance while trying to figure out the mystery of the missing girls.

Cally Wood decides to attend St. Bede’s private boarding school halfway through her junior year to get away from her absent-minded, alcoholic mother. Cally’s mom never recovered from losing both her husband and older daughter Clare ten years ago. Clare was visiting a friend from camp at St. Bede’s when both girls just disappeared during the night and were never seen again. Cally’s dad died shortly thereafter of a heart attack. While it seems morbid for Cally to attend the school where her sister...more
It's refreshing to read a book that ends when the pages run out. :-)
Cally has been a fun character to get to know, except for her boyfriend relationship part. I guess that was thrown in to make her seem more like a teenager, or maybe so more people would turn on her. I don't know, but I wasn't impressed with it. It didn't seem in character at all.

When I read the back of this book, I knew I was in for a ride. Imagine going to a new school only to learn it has dark, creepy secrets and you've taken the place of a girl who disappeared. As scary as that sounds, I couldn't wait to figure out how the story would unfold!
Cally is definitely NOT your typically main character. She's a girl who doesn't care what anyone thinks of her, dresses punk, and shaves off her hair whenever she feels like it. Even though I would probably never talk to someone...more

The Little Woods is an interesting story about Cally Woods that lost a sister tragically when she was a child. In an attempt to move on with her life, she begins to attend a school located in the same area her sister disappeared. However, the boarding school isn't quite what she expected.
I liked Cally and was routing for her the entire time. I'm surprised she managed to hold things together long enough to attend school despite all of the crazy things going on around her.

I wanted to like this book -- I requested it specifically because it fits into one of those sub-genres that really appeal to me (boarding school, YA, mystery with a hint of magical realism/supernatural). But I just couldn't get past a couple of things: #1, the author's overuse of big words from her thesaurus that just make no sense in the context of the sentence (and worse, don't fit with the character's voice or the tone of the passage...more

Reading The Little Woods felt like watching a battle between the good and the bad. There is so much potential in this story, but sadly the poor execution is impossible to ignore.
The story itself was actually quite good. Cally goes off to St. Bedes boarding school. She gets a scholarship because 10 years ago her sister mysteriously disappeared while visiting the school. According the police, her sister died in a fire but since they never found the bodies Cally has always been skeptical....more

There were certain aspects of The Little Woods that I really enjoyed - the boarding school backdrop, the mystery surrounding the unexplained disappearances, the intrigue and allure of Cally's new friends - but there were other aspects - the author's copious usage of a thesaurus (did you catch what I did there?) and a seemingly plot-irrelevant love triangle - that had me cringing.

Calista Wood arrives at St. Bede's Academy half way through the year. She's been granted a free ride, but there's more than school on her mind. Ten years ago, her sister and another girl mysteriously vanished outside this school. Now Calista is back, searching for answers to her sister's disappearance.

I gave this a two because I thought the primary plot was interesting. However, the characters in the book are terrible!! ally is an outcast 16-17ish year old that wears "skater" clothes and supposedly is into punk rock, but manages to become the most attractive, popular girl at this Gossip-girl-esque boarding school, where the kids are described as entitled, rich snobs? Am I getting this right? Makes absolutely no sense. Apparently, every high school student at St. Bede's is incredibly rich and...more
This one was … interesting. I requested it on Netgalley because I loved the premise: creepy boarding school, the new girl, a murder mystery — all things that I typically enjoy, but it just didn’t deliver. Maybe it was because I read this right after I read Dark Companion which has similar themes. I was still on a high after reading that book and had high expectations for this one, but it just didn’t grab me the way I hoped it would.

Yeah, I really like this book. The conversations were great, Cally's voice (I thought) was great, and the ending was great.
Not the who-done-it-revelation ending. You could kind of see it a mile away. Kind of.
I'm talking about the Love Triangle ending. I hate love triangles. I stop reading series once I find out that in the second and third book, the hardest choice the heroine has to make is who she is going to pick in the end. Can't we just stop with all this drama? Can't I just read a romance...more

'The Little Woods' is a great YA mystery novel that takes the reader into the secret depths of high class boarding schools. We learn early in the book that our heroine, Cally, has suffered a devastating loss several years ago. Due to this loss, she is drawn to St. Bede's Academy, a private boarding school with ties to her past. Once at the school, Cally's new friends and classmates tell her about the stretch of woods outside the school that are rumored to be haunted. There's also the mystery of...more

Templeman’s The little woods is slow in action but lovely to read. I mean, it is cataloged as a thriller but there is more of Cally going on that the actual mystery. However, the suspense was good enough to keep me reading every single page until the end (because you too skip pages sometimes, don’t you?).

The longer I think about this one, the more disappointed I am in it. This story is contrived to the point that even when all of the pieces come together at the end, the plot holes and character holes are more gaping.
Ten years ago, Cally's sister and her best friend died after spending the night on the campus of St. Bede's academy (her sister's friend, Laurel, was the daughter of one of the teachers and that gave them free reign to stay there that evening). Now, Cally's decided mid-way through th...more

Oh pretty cover. You tricked me with your gorgeous pink and purple, with those trees. You lured me in by your beauty. I was so excited to read this book and I was hooked for half of it. But then it just bothered me. The characters, and I mean every.single.one. Of them, were so.. Idiotic. Ridiculous. Confused. All of them. The kids, the adults. This book was just full of what the fuckery.

I was worried, at first, that this book was going to be another run-of-the-mill boarding school tale. Not so. The mystery is convoluted enough to keep things interesting, but not too complicated. But the characters are the real triumph. Cally is fantastic. She's just edgy enough to be considered strange at St. Bede's, but not so weird that she would be too quirky in the background that she's used to. The revolving door of stereotypical St. Bede's girls--Noel/Helen/Freddy/Pigeon--are almost indis...more
I have a soft spot for books set in boarding schools. I know they’re not always the most realistic, and it’s not like I ever went to one. But the idea of high school kids having the kind of freedoms and interactions that college kids have makes for much more interesting, and sometimes “grown up” conflicts that you don’t get with young adult books all the time. Except that typically, the kids are all rich. That brings it down just a bit.
