When I read "Beyond the Western Sun", I absolutely fell in love with Kristina Circelli's writing style, and her ability to breathe life into the Native American myths and culture, so I was very excited to be able to read this second book in the series, and I was definitely not disappointed.

When I read "Beyond the Western Sun", I absolutely fell in love with Kristina Circelli's writing style, and her ability to breathe life into the Native American myths and culture, so I was very excited to be able to read this second book in the series, and I was definitely not disappointed.

In the first book, "Beyond the Western Sun", we were introduced to Whisper, a very complicated and original character, who only becomes more complicated and original in "Walk the Red Road". I love the author's focus on characters throughout the story, and how she brings to light not only their actions, but their emotions, as well, so that the story becomes almost personal, and the characters are understood as people, instead of only characters in a book. When it comes to Whisper, when I finished the book, I felt like she had matured some, and I liked seeing her go through different struggles in this novel, and learn more of who she is, and who she could be.

Perhaps the thing I love most about this series is the writing, which is poetic, heartfelt, and descriptive enough that the reader feels as though they are in the story, but not so overboard with description that every single detail is described, so that the reader can't use their imagination. The scenes flow well, which keeps the pages turning, and the dialogue is spot-on, giving the novel even more depth.

Many new characters and plots are introduced in "Walk the Red Road", and I loved seeing all of them unfold, and run into the next book, which I'm sure will be amazing. And though there are so many plot points, I never felt lost while reading, and I felt like the author gave each character their limelight and special traits. I especially liked the relationship between Whisper and Hunting Hawk, which was sweet in its own way.

Another thing I loved was the focus on Native American myths and culture. It is obvious that the author has a great respect for the topic, and all of the research and love that went into this story proves it. Each tale was brought to life in unique and special ways, and the focus on heritage and tradition was inspiring.

My cons for this book weren't many. Though the dark air that the series has is fitting and unique, I felt as though sometimes the novel was a bit too dark and morbid, and would have liked to have seen a few more "happy" scenes. Also, throughout the book there were times when I really didn't understand Whisper or the Elder's reasoning, and felt that their thoughts should have been explained a bit more for the reader, especially towards the end.

Overall, this was a great book, and a good addition to the series. I look forward to seeing what other adventures these characters go through in the next book. I would recommend this series if you like: Native American lore, horror, dark tales, unique reads, magic and fantasy. As far as "content", there is none to mention, and I would put the reading level at "eighteen and up". Four of five stars to this fantastic, well written novel!

I am SO looking forward to the third installment of this series. There were quite a few surprises in this installment that caught me off guard,in a good way!

Amazing is all I can say. Beautifully written and wonderful characters. I wish the next one were ready to read. I devoured both of these books in just days.
