My first "official" review for Bad Ass Book Reviews. I hope you enjoy it.

Or you can read it below..

Let me tell you what I loved about this book…

The characters are so different.

From our human perspective, Lanore, the main character is dark, with dreadlocks. But that is not what I mean by different. I’m talking about different in how they transform into their supernatural self. You have Lanore, who is a mixed breed (she’s part Fairy and...more

4.5 stars. Fanfreakingtastic!

Why did I wait so long to read this book? Perhaps, because I expected it to fizzle out for me. I thought it might catch my attention at the beginning but then ultimately get boring. This was my expectation because with very few exceptions most urban fantasy books have been causing this reaction in me for the past 12-18 months. Fire Baptized is different than most urban fantasy books I have read and as a re...more

This is not a book I’m happy about reviewing, because I really wanted to like it and its rating doesn’t truly reflect its quality.
You know how you love something like ice cream (note: I don’t like ice cream) and so you eat lots and lots of it. Then one day you pick up your favourite ice cream and it looks extra sumptuous. Even though there is nothing wrong with that ice cream, and even though it’s just like every other ice cream you’ve bought, you just suddenly can’t stomachit.

This is one of those books that made me feel like the author was in my mind and writing down everything that I ever wanted to read.... oh wait... I'm the author of this book! Well I still loved it!

Fire Baptized is an action-packed, sexy, murder mystery. There wasn't a moment in the book when I wasn't completely engaged. Lanore commanded my attention.

The habitat is is a caged space where humans force supernaturals to live. Lanore is a Mixbreed, born of two different supernatural species. Like other Mixbreeds, she is an outcast among supernaturals, even within a city full of supernaturals cast out of the human world. As you can see from the cover art, Lanore's power is pyrokinesis. She crea...more

Before I get into the specifics, I have to say that books like these are the reason I keep my door open to indie authors. Fire Baptized flies in the face of self-published stereotypes. It's fresh and unique. It has great character development, a fantastic plot, and steamy love interests. It's unpredictable; it has great pacing; and it clearly had a proficient editor.

Our heroine is Lanore, a mixed breed supernatural, who lives in the caged ghettos where humans relegate the preternat...more

I found this book by accident during one of those “lost” nights on goodreads.com. Any goodreader will know exactly what I am talking about. Those nights when hours are lost and unknown books are found. I never would have found this book if I didn’t belong to a site like goodreads, and finding books like Fire Baptized makes this site a gem (so long story short, go join goodreads.com! and for those who are reading this on goodreads, good for you. You have done the right thing.).

I’ll start off by saying this very much exceeded my expectations. Lanore is a mixbreed with the power to control fire, a pyromancer. When she unknowingly stumbles upon a murder in progress, Lanore being the only witness to the murder and the killer seeing who she is, it puts her in real danger. Not only does Lanore have her own safety to worry about but she is also caught in the middle of two men, each wanting her for themselves, one who she had been with in the past and one who is new on the sc...more

Wright got it right! What an impressive debut effort!

Kenya Wright's Fire Baptized pleasantly surprised me! Just when I start to wonder if I'm just reading too much Urban Fantasy, I run into a fantastic story like this one.

There are no secret supernaturals here. Since the '70s humans have isolated these species to live in restricted areas. Think District 9 with a little less slum...in some parts of town. They identify all of the different species with brands on their foreheads. Of course there i...more

When warnings and body parts from the killer starts showing up at La La and MeShack apartment the esoteric Zulu moves in to make himself a bigger part of La La's life.

Mixbreeds or Mixies are treated worse than second class citizens so when the murders start to happen, no one really cares except La La and the MFE, headed by Zulu. Wright does a good job on a sensitive topic in this case speciesism. Here race doesn't matter but if you are a mixie, no matter the combination, you are nothing...more

I really enjoyed this book.

I wasnt sure what to expect when I decided to buy this. The author was on my friends list, we have similar taste in books, so I gave it a go.
I am not dissappointed. A great break out book.

With a fresh new outlook on the supernatural, this book is sure to impress. I loved the little love triangle. Both the men made me want to choose them. The dialogue was great. I tend to get really bored with books when they spend too much time explaining non essential things, and spen...more

In Fire Baptized by Kenya Wright, Lanore, otherwise known as La La, must solve a paranormal mystery before her own life is lost. And if that weren’t enough to deal with, she also has an issue with deciding which guy she’s in love with, she has to find the new vessel and she has to deal with college professors and peers that don’t like her.

Fire Baptized is a paranormal all its own. In this mystery/murder/romance/paranormal/fantasy book all rolled into one, there are definitely a lot of positives...more

This was very, very good, and very, very different from what I usually read. Can’t say I was too surprised, because when I received the request and read the sample chapters I knew I had something quite outstanding coming my way, but... yes. Wow.

The world built by Kenya Wright here is fascinating. I find the whole Habitat concept both fascinating and horrifying – fascinating because it’s so plausible, and horrifying because that’s the only way I can feel when faced with the dilapidated lifestyle,...more

I first stumbled on to this book when it was recommended to me by a friend. I didn't think I'd go and buy it but nevertheless, I read the synopsis and found myself actually liking the idea of reading it for myself.

I don't know what I was expecting but this book definitely delivered. Heart-racing action, a steamy love triangle and a chilling murderer on the loose. It had everything I needed to enjoy it. I liked the difference of having a black protagonist, the very unique 'habitat' (the cage in M...more

Lanore comes on a serial killer killing a in an alley after she herself was assaulted minutes ago after she had been stealing a case of university textbooks out of necessity. Fire Baptized really begins with an attention-grabbing start along with introducing the current life of. She lives with her ex-boyfriend , Meshack, at his apartment she happens to share with him. It's also quickly obvious that he still wants her but s...more

I received this ARC copy from the author for an honest review.

I was beside myself excited when the author contacted me months before the release of this novel for an honest review. When it came in the mail I have to admit I lagged a little. I was kind of scared. But once I began to read....O-M-G, I could have kicked myself. This book introduces a new kind of supernatural. The half Fae mixed breeds have powers that are beyond awesome. Our heroine is an African American dread sporting fire seeping...more

In a world where supernaturals have been forced to live in a cage! Lenore is a Mixedbreed...or Mixie that gets discriminated against every day! But she's a fighter. The purebloods treat the Mixies like second class citizens. With a sliver "X" branded on her forehead she's a fighter! Being a student at the University is a great feat for Mixie's, her world has changed dramatically one rainy night as she witnesses a murder! With the help of her sexy roommate and ex boyfriend MeShack and her new sui...more

After reading this I think I may have just become Paranormal Fiction Baptized and all the authors who write in this genre have Kenya Wright to thank for my baptism and conversion. So I know what you're thinking i.e. "girl, where have you been all this time??" To be honest, I don't have much of an answer for you. Actually I do, but it's kind of a long story. You see I was always hesitant to start reading the genre. I didn't quite know if I was ready to handle supernatural beings interacting with...more

A very different read for me and I enjoyed it very much. The story and character development was very strong. I also loved the world that the author created. Humans have forced the supernaturals to live behind a magical wall of sorts (think of Escape From New York). And within this wall, the supernaturals are marked with a brand on their forehead to identify what they are and let me tell you, there is a little bit of everythi...more

I absolutely adore this book! It took me on a roller coaster ride and whoo wee I didn't see that ending coming! Lanore was the perfect heroine for the story and Zulu...yea, he needed a bit more air time. But that's neither here no there, Ms. Wright developed a city filled with social injustice where the character are literally judged by who they are *Pure Blood, Mixie, Human*. It's definitely my type of urban fantasy. It had drama, suspense, lust, romance, slap a ho' moments! EVERYTHING!!! LoL....more

This is a most excellent read. Well done and for less than $1.00. There was so much about this book that I enjoyed but what stood out the most for me was the world building.

Even though I gave it 5 stars, I wish that she could have spent a little time on a few things that I will not name because of spoilers. It is possible that as the series grows (I hope) the author will fill in some blanks.

It was fast paced, sexy and edgey with timely themes.

Again, well done.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lanore and MeShack's journey and the symbolism created within this world by the author. I was a bit overwhelmed by the fast pace in the beginning, but quickly found my bearings. I'd recommend this gritty, unique urban fantasy to everyone.

And did I say there's a hot African-American/Iranian guy in this book? His name is, eh-em, MeShack in case you missed it. Check it out.

The book has a fast pace, it begins with action, rather than an introduction to this new world we're in. The characters are strong and realistic, in that, in spite of the stereotypical traits, they do manage to surprise you. The book deals with race and gender and discrimination in a clear way, without overdoing any of it. I thought the romance, sex and the love triangle a bit overdone, unnecessary and irritating, but that may just be because I don't like romance novels. I couldn't say the idea...more

The Chain Will Not be Broken

In a world where humans have forced supernaturals to live in caged cities, branded on their forehead to reveal what form of supernaturals they are. In the world of supernaturals it is even worse to wear an X, the mark of a mixed breed. No one knows this more than Lanore who wears the mark of the X. A quite reserved young college student, struggling and living with her ex-boyfriend, Meshack, a were-cheetah, Lanore’s life is forever changed the day she decides to steal...more

I love reading a book I know nothing about and finish it pleasantly surprised. Like the description says, all the supernatural creatures live in "habitats" (actually giant cages spanning an entire city). The story never goes into why or how that happened. It is an interesting shift from most other books, where either the supes are the most powerful and/or live under the radar. How the humans rounded up them all I have no idea. What matters is that they did.

The Politics: And within the habitat, t...more

Fire Baptized was given to me by the author Kenya Wright. Lanore, a Mixbreed or "Mixie" (she’s part Fairy and part Demon) is marked with a silver X brand on her forehead. This is how all of the supernaturals are identified by the humans that keep them locked behind caged cities called The Habitat. The marks of the supernaturals are: a full moon for Vampires, a crescent moon for Shifters, a pair of wings for Fairies ect....

Lanore has the ability to create fire which she does not reveal except und...more

This is a 4.5 star.

I read this book on a recommend from Kat Kennedy who reviewed it a while ago.

So, man did I like this book! Great from start to finish. The world was creative, interesting and raw. It was fun to read an adult book, after all the YA fare I've been consuming lately.

The habitat is basically a prison where all the supernaturals: fairies, demons, were-animals, witches, etc. are kept. Lanore is a girl with a plan: to get her college degree and get the heck out of the projects. The pr...more
