I received this book through a Goodreads first reads giveaway thingy. Free book automatically gets half a star, and half stars are rounded up.

What I liked: 1. Receiving the book free in the mail. The book is also signed by someone, presumably by the author, though I have no way to verify that.

What I liked: 1. Receiving the book free in the mail. The book is also signed by someone, presumably by the author, though I have no way to verify that.

3. I think I might like the author as a person.

What I did not like: 1. The story. Awful. I think Ms. Bourgeois must be a Twilight Saga fan. Shelby is a klutz. That's original... There's vampires but the just drink blood from their coffee mugs and eat raw meat. Every single character is super understanding. Oh, you're a vampire, no problem, you can still date my daughter. Mom, I see dead people. No biggie, your grandmother hears voices and I get hunches.
Shelby seems really immature. I know 17 isn't very old and it's been so long I don't really remember being seventeen myself but still how many times does she have to say jammies?
I feel like the "research" the author did was figure out what clothes teenagers wore and what music they listened to in the 70s. Then she pretty much gave up that too. I'm pretty sure douche bag wasn't all that popular yet, but I could be wrong.
It seems that yes, she's read a whole bunch of books and the stories she has to tell are just mashed up verisons of those "other people's narratives." I think she's really hoping they'll want to make a movie. That would explain the excessive description of where every thing is located in a house, since I really don't care that the green telephone was between the kitchen and the living room, and it was not a signifcant factor. Several scenes were completely unnecessary and added nothing to the story. The book is already short and it seems like it must have been a struggle to get even that many pages.
2. Random bolded words and phrases. These increased toward the end of the book. At first I thought they might be a mistake, but now I'm pretty sure she intended them. I'm no expert but I think that generally when you want to emphasize a word, italics are used. Plus, I think the author needs to give the reader more credit. I think we can infer in our own minds when something needs emphasis. In addition, random capitalized words. Same thing. Also, every time a character had a thought, it was in italics. Even though it was also always clearly stated that the character was having a thought he/she was not speaking out loud.
3. Switching between first and third person randomly. This works for some authors but the technique was lacking here.

So...I understand this was a first time thing. The characters need some depth, and maybe the author needs to attend some workshops and come up with a few original ideas. It really wasn't a horrible effort. Just because you like to read doesn't mean you can write. (As evidenced from this review.)(less)

Every once in awhile as a book reviewer, you become interested in a book based on the synopsis of the storyline. While this genre is generally right up my alley, I found it difficult to concentrate on the story based on a few factors.

Keeping in mind that the author, C.Y. Bourgeois, was trying to write this for a Young Adult audience in mind but for the occasion curse word, she had to reclassify this one under Adult Suspense Thriller. It's also hard not to attempt to compare her to Stephanie Meyers who's writing style is superb. But based on these facts, the story involves a serial murderer who is hunting down and kidnapping young high school girls from Palmer, Alaska. While it seems like the crimes are not connected, Shelby Leight (pronounced Light) receives visions from the dearly departed asking her to help track down and stop the killer.

When she learns she is gifted in this area based on a casual conversation on the way to the bus stop, Shelby feels she has to try and help before someone else she knows winds up dead or worse even she becomes the next victim.

When Shelby is introduced to the new student in school, a young brooding teenage boy named Paul Thatcher, who she develops an attraction to and tries to befriend in her Chemistry class. (Sound familiar so far). He is a pale, tall and wears dark glasses to keep from getting headaches in the bright lights and sunlight. Yet unknown to Shelby, Paul has a dark secret he is keeping, one that his mother is working on dealing with the changes he is going through, and one that requires him to drink blood.

While the storyline sounded promising, for me if left me with a desire for wanting more from this one. I found myself re-reading the content because the author spends so much time detailing her descriptions of virtually everything in the book, it becomes distracting. There are even parts of the book where the author re-describes something that you begin to wonder if you've missed something and are re-reading a portion of the book again and again. So for me, this really interrupted where the story was heading.

I received Visions of You compliments of Pump Up Your Book Tours for my honest review and found this one hard to stick with. Perhaps with other readers this book might become a favorite but for me, it wound up lacking in so many areas. For that reason, I have to rate this one a 2 out of 5 stars. (less)

I have to say that I really enjoyed Visions of You by C.Y. Bourgeois. I received the book as part of the author’s tour at Pump Up Your Books. The book is suitable for young adult readers, but due to a few swear words the book had to be classified as an adult suspense/thriller.

Let me start by saying this book was creepy! The story takes place in the 1970’s, and for some reason, when books take place in that era; I find it scarier (for example Lovely Bones). It just seems like during that time frame the world was a safer place, so when you read about bad things happening during that time – to me it’s scarier than if it took place in the current day.

The main character, Shelby Leight, is a carefree, fun teenager with a loving, close-knit family that has just been rocked by the loss of her brother in the Vietnam War. The family, who lives in a tiny town in Alaska, is just getting over their loss when tragedy strikes again. Young girls are being abducted in Shelby’s town and those surrounding her home. Shelby thinks she has seen the abductor.

Amidst all of the crises a new student, Paul, moves to town. Paul has an interesting background that I don’t want to give away. Let’s just say that I’ve never heard of this condition, but it’s an interesting spin on the topic. Shelby’s best friend is abducted and Paul and Shelby begging talking while waiting for their chance to speak with the FBI agents who come to their school. The two start dating shortly after.

As more girls begin to disappear, Shelby begins having visions of her friend that was abducted. Her friend Larita is trying to tell Shelby where to find the other girls. In the meantime, Shelby and her group of friends plus Paul begin working on a plan to try to catch the person murdering teens. Will Larita get through to Shelby to save an innocent teens life? Will Shelby and crew be able to catch the killer before he catches one of them? What is Paul’s interesting condition? You’re going to have to read to find out, and I promise you, it’s worth it.

C.Y. Bourgeois writes with an edge of your seat intensity in some parts, while in others giving details about Alaska, the 1970’s and vampire clubs. The characters are very well developed and very likable – especially Shelby with her carefree, enthusiastic attitude. As I said before, the story was creepy. Not like in blood and monsters creepy – but the all-to-real horror of innocence lost as teenage girls are abducted and killed by a serial killer. I really hope you’ll all give this one a chance. It’s a good one.

This book was okay. It had a slow start and doesn't really start until about chapter 10. The synopsis is interesting & the little twist they don't tell you is that it involves vampires or as their called :sucubus. So that got me to keep reading. Some parts I thought were unnecessary but they were ultimately important to the story. the chapters were short & the writing was well.

Wow this book was something else. I completely expected it to turn out differently but was amazed by the author's creative storytelling and different approach to the ever played out vampire story. I really enjoyed the main character as well, Shelby is a normal teenage girl and easy to relate to. The time frame was also cool for me. It takes place in the 1970's and while i'm not familiar with it the author made it so easy to imagine; i especially loved all the books and music that were mentioned...more

Excellent! I read this book in just a few hours, 204 pages. Unusual premise, but it worked well in the storyline. The main character, Shelby, is a strong, intelligent, sarcastic female...all the qualities I admire! I look forward to reading Bourgeois's books in the future.
