Emily Rutherford is having a very bad day.

Of course, having the man you’ve loved forever announce his engagement to your (now very former) best friend will do that.

Emily is sure nothing good could possibly come out of this horrid situation. But she lets her sisters—along with Francis Riley, the delectable but brooding Earl of Dunhurst—convince her that a season in London...more

To Emily Rutherford (and everyone else it seems) marriage to Adrian Fairfield, son of Viscount Carroway, is inevitable. They've known each other since childhood, they love each other and they have an understanding. But when Adrian announces his intention to marry Emily's friend Kate, Emily is heartbroken.

Francis Riley, Earl of Dunhurst is Adrian's cousin. Unknown to Emily, he has been in love with her for years. Seeing her distress over Adrian's engagement, Francis invites Emily and her...more

Welcome to the London ton where anything and everything is game and ready to be spread as gossip through ballrooms, drawing rooms, house parties, behind fans and over the breakfast table.

Spotted: One, Miss Emily Rutherford is having the most terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Turns out Lord Adrian Fairchild's promise of marrying her when they were younger were just thrown out there due to their comfortable camaraderie...more

"How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back" is the ideal boy meets girl next door, and go from best friends to lovers. A sweet story all around.

Emily Rutherford and her sisters have a priviledged life and all going for them, until of course tragedy knocks on their door. From there on, all goes down hill, them included. Edward, a most hedious cousin, basically kicks them out of the place they've known as their home all their lives. Out of pure "generosity", as Edward puts it, he lets them live at a...more

Let me start by saying that I happend on this book by accident, I literally accidentially purchased it when I mentioned to buy another book by one of my well known, well beloved authors, I'll admitt it, I tend to stick to the same authors unless someone recommends them to me. But if we all did that how do new authors find their audience. So here is my recommendation to you.

Emily Rutherford is having a very bad day, we know this because we've read the back of the book. The poor girl has just wit...more

***CONTAINS A SPOILER***

I try to find *something* to like about any book that I read. For this novel - that would be Francis Riley, the brooding hero. I also enjoyed some of the open and witty conversation between Emily and Francis. As a couple, they work well. In addition, I found parts of the novel to be quite humorous...

However, overall something was lacking. The story felt...well...rushed. I like a well developed story line, and I tend to shy away from books that skip whole periods of time.

I'm 50-50 on this. A part of me liked this mainly bec of Francis. I like his brooding, protective, responsible personality. Diff from most heroes of HR that seduce right away and driven too much of their lust. He was different. He was patient, there with Emily as she got over her childhood love and even helped out the three sisters.
On the other hand, I didn't like some of the characters in the story. Emily to me seemed, idk, ditzy(?). She would have this perceptions of people/situations that's...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from Sophie Barnes, the first full length novel I've read of the author's.

The writing style was fab, it was romantic and funny, with vivid description. I liked that the hero and heroine didn't immediately fall in love and that it took time for them both to realise how they felt about the other.

The biggest con for me was Emily. Sometimes I loved her, and I loved seeing how she changed through the book. But sometimes I just wanted to shake the girl!! Potential *SPOIL...more

I was dissapointed in this book. The premise seemed so fun and interesting; plus it was recommended by Julia Quinn, one of my favorite authors. But it just fell flat to me. I wish there was more plot and less random conversation that doesn't move the story along. I get that the author was trying to show them slowly gaining appreciation for each other's opinions and falling in love, but it got pretty dull sometimes. I don't care about your opinions on Socrates and art! Give me some plot! Some act...more

I have a confession to make. I’m really on the fence about this book and I hate that. On one hand, it had all the right ingredients for a topnotch historical romance, but on the other, it missed the mark.

The characters were sometimes mere shadows of themselves, while the protagonist, Emily, often seemed bi-polar. I looked for more depth in the former romantic relationship as well as in Emily’s sisters, but it kept slipping away, never quite taking shape. Fr...more

I simply loved this book! We've come a long way in this genre and this is certainly not your granny's romance novel.
It's well written, entertaining and easy to follow, with just the right combination or romance, adventure and intrigue, without the overly ornate descriptions so typical of this genre(which eventually make me skip a few pages ahead just to return to the plot).
The well defined characters simply come alive and, as the story unfolds, you suffer and rejoice with each of them as you c...more

Emily Rutherford and her sisters have had a difficult couple of years. After the death of their parents, a distant cousin inherited the estate under the laws of entail. The sisters found themselves shunted out to a small home on the estate with virtually none of their possessions. The one thing to make it bearable for Emily is the understanding she has with Adrian Calloway that they will marry when the time is right.
After Adrian’s engagement is announced at the Calloway ball to Emily’s best fri...more

I had such high hopes for this novel mainly because of the quirky title (I do love quirky titles) and because of the synopsis. It sounded like a great story with an interesting plot. But it just lacked something like the queens in this genre, Julia Quinn among others, have.
I am still giving it a three, because while it was a little bit lacking in the presentation, I did see potential. It is obvious that it's a debut novel, but I am going to read more of Sophie Barnes when more novels are publish...more

Emily Rutherford is shaken to the core when her lifelong friend Adrian proposes to her best friend. After all, Emily and Adrian had an understanding that they would become engaged in due time...well, that was understood by Emily, his parents, her sisters, and practically the entire ton. Apparently Adrian, and his heart, missed that particular discussion. Wanting to do nothing more than stay in her small cottage, she is persuaded to go to London and enjoy a Season, along with her two sisters at t...more

"I'm not ready for marriage yet," he said. "But when I will be, there's nobody I'd rather marry than you, my dearest friend."

Emily and Adrian had been best friends for ages. When they were younger they came to what Emily thought was an understanding, that they would eventually marry. She wasn't the only one who thought so. When Adrian finally confided to his parents he was going to propose, his own mother thought to let Emily know of his intentions so she would be prepared for the proposal. The...more

Sophie Barnes's first published work and I think she got it, if you are a fan of Julia Quinn's work I think you will enjoy this book.

The book starts off with Emily Rutherford and her sisters struggling because of the death of their parents. Their only hope is for Emily to marry her childhood crush..... but it turns out he is marring her best friend. Lucky Francis saves the day and offers to help both Emily and her sisters. Slowly she starts to realize what she really wants and you get to watch b...more

Ok, so to the book I had said before I was going to review – but I got sidetracked as per usual - “How Miss Rutherford got her Groove Back.” As I’ve mentioned before and I never fail to mention in any given opportunity, I am a sucker for historical romances, regency ones in particular, England in the 1800’s if we’re being very specific. My favourite in that genre would have to be Julia Quinn, and interestingly enough she had helped Sophie Barnes out – as it seems from the Acknowledgement in the...more

Deeply dissatisfying, the dialogue is overwhelmingly sappy and cheesy. The characters are kinda flat. At first, I thought Francis very intriguing. I found his plan to seduce and flirt his way into Emily's heart fascinating. Then, all of a sudden, that plan seemed to disappear into thin air and they were both overwhelmed with their trysts.

The characters are annoying from Emily to Kate, especially Kate. One minute she is shouting at Francis for his 'dishonesty' and for 'keeping a mistress', the v...more

I actually won a copy of this book on Goodreads. I was very excited to read the book since I really enjoy romance books, especially regency era with happy endings.

This book was very fun. Although at times it was predictable, that is part of the charm. It was erasy to laugh at the lengths Emily and her sisters went to in order to find love. Francis was precisely what a hero should be; caring but not lacking backbone.

At times Emily was a little too whiny and naive, but it was clear she was a likea...more

HOW MISS RUTHERFORD GOT HER GROOVE BACK by Sophie Barnes is entertaining, lighthearted even. Whereas I truly did enjoy it, I feel it lacked something toward the latter part of the story. Perhaps the love connection is revealed too soon or Ms. Barnes just didn't know how to get her hero and heroine to the conclusion without losing sight of the tension that originally existed between the pair.

Ms. Barnes' characters are full of life and humor just as old friends might be who have grown to age toge...more

So I found the first half of the book enjoyable. It was a little risqué for my taste however was greatly amused when our of the blue this seemingly Jane Austen type novel suddenly had sex involved. Imagine my surprise! For the most part, I found it to be witty until the two main characters finally admit to loving one another and then it's non stop "I love you forever my darling". Does have a fun ending so if you are looking for something frivolous to read than this is worth your five minutes. Do...more

Really enjoyable read. Well written, entertaining, easy to follow, sweet, interesting, charming with just the right combination of romance, adventure and intrigue.
The characters came alive at the turn of every page and one cannot help sufferring and rejoicing with each one of them as you come to understand what makes them tick and cheer them on in their quest for love, adventure and a sense of purpose. The plot line is well laid out and keeps the story flowing while maintaining the reader's inter...more

1 Star.

I picked this up as an ebook because it had some buzz online, and it seemed like a cute, light read.

Aside from the cute title - that's about all this book has going for it. I was terribly disappointed in this book.

Up until chapter 8 I thought that book had potential. Both our hero and heroine, Emily and Frances, start off the story as being interesting and unique characters. They both quickly devolve into classic stereotypical romance novel characters, complete with silly actions, ridicu...more

“It began with the twitch of her lower lip as it took on a life of its own, rippling outward to the corners of her mouth and forcing them upward into a helpless smile. She instantly clasped one hand over her mouth in a frantic attempt to silence the sound that was coming from her throat. The result was that she half-spluttered, half-coughed, her eyes painfully wide as she desperately wished a hole would emerge in the oriental carpet and mercifully swallow her up.” 8 people liked it
“And then of course there was her opinion to consider. Would she ever care to entertain the thought of kissing him, let alone marrying him? He was willing to bet his life that she wasn't. Not yet anyway. Therefore, he had made up his mind. He had devised a carefully thought-out plan, its sole purpose being to eventually ensure Emily's hand in marriage. And he would do it the old fashioned way--through trickery.” 1 person liked it
