ROSE OF RABY is the first and second books in a series of four about Cecylee Neville (1415-1495), mother of Richard III and Edward IV, Queen by Right and Abbess. This tale of Cecylee’s girlhood will appeal to readers of YA novels.

Rose of Raby and One Seed Sown (the first two books in the Thwarted Queen quartet).
The first book is told from the point of view of a lively, mischievous, headstrong nine-year-old, who is betrothed to Richard of York, who is himself destined (if there are enough convenient deaths) to become King of England. Cecylee escapes marriage by a hair since her mother is determined to keep her at home. Because of the delay, Cecylee escapes the plight of most young noblewomen—that is to become breeding co...more

I realized that the first two books are included in this edition of this series. I have already reviewed book 2 here (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...), so I will only be reviewing book one in this review.
This was the second book I read in the series, but it is the first in the series. This book was a short, easy read, and its purpose is to introduce the audience to Ceylee. When the book opens, she is nine years old and already being betrothed to an older man. I found myself mulling over...more

I have read several books about this time period, so I was familiar with Cecily Neville. It is interesting that in this series how sympathetic she is, how well-educated, and yet she cannot resist the bowman, nor in the last book of the series of 4, she cannot take her own advice and bridle her tongue, yet her staff love her.
Also this series treats Elizabeth Woodville-Wydeville as a snipe. Surely there's a happy medium?
I didn't appreciate the insight to the reactions of the various characters...more
