I confess this is my first Love Inspired book. I find it refreshingly nice. This is a historical and the Scriptures regularly quoted feel natural, not preachy, in the mouth of an early nineteenth-century English vicars daughter. The author does not project twenty-first century American female assertiveness into an historical character.

The opening chapter left me breathless as one disastrous thing after another befell Anna in Dickenian style. The lovers make every effort not to fall in love, not

And yet another few weeks of twelve to sixteen hour days at work has forced me into reading mind candy. I begin to despair of ever being able to read any other type of book. Thankfully, though, this book was enjoyable and I really ended up liking the book. As I’ve often said, Christian fiction can often get preachy and be overbearing. Not this book. There were plenty of references to basic Christian living and doctrine, but none of it came across as a sermon. Each reference fit seamlessly into t ...more

Anna Newfield has just lost her father. She’s at the funeral when she learns that her brother is presumed dead in the colonies, and that she has to move out of the parsonage that very day. And not only that, but the temporary lodging she obtains is no longer available.

Major Edmond Grenville happens to be there when Anna loses everything, and he’s

A Proper Companion is the first in the Ladies in Waiting series by Louise M. Gouge. It's a clean Christian Regency romance during the War of 1812.

Anna Newfield's father has died, and the story opens with his funeral. Enter Major Edmond Grenville, just returned home, wounded from the Revolutionary War. He has just arrived to inform Anna in person that her brother died in battle. We then see the new vicar's wife start insisting that Anna pack up and leave the vicarage immediately. This all happen

Louise Gouge has a way of writing that soothes my soul. Her stories are light, romantic, and fun, and I always look forward to each new release. I believe A Proper Companion is her best yet. Set in Regency England, it will utterly delight fans of that era with all the strictures and mores of high society, the classes, the haut-ton, the titles and heirs. Oh my, who can keep up with all of that? Louise does it with grace and ease. All the while relaying a charming tale of a woman stripped of her f ...more

If you like Regencies, you'll love A PROPER COMPANION by Louise M. Gouge. If you aren't a fan of Regency, you'll love this book anyway! Ms. Gouge has done a beautiful job of taking you back to a time when the Prince Regent reigned in England. You'll feel the atmosphere and the many strictures of the early 1800's. The author brings the time period alive and helps you understand the uniqueness of Regency. Her ability to draw you in and connect you with her characters is superb. She fleshes out bot ...more

book #1 "A Proper Companion"

Anna Newfield loses everything-her home, her inheritance and her future. Her only piece of good fortune is a job offer from wounded major Edmond Grenville, when he comes to speak with her about her brothers heroics in the war.
He finds her quite gentle ways so much like her brothers that he feels the need to help...
He invites her back to his home thinking she can be a companion to his Mother.
Anna fits right in with the family a

I enjoyed this story of a girl who's family is all gone, leaving her on her own only to be rescued by the man who's life was saved by her brother in war. It's always interesting to read about those of social status and their servants. One thing I found of interest was the genetics of marriage laws that were in force in England at that time. When I came upon a sentence stating that it was not legal for a widow to marry her husbands brother, I did a little research on my own and found some interes ...more

Set in Regency England, the author showed how different life was depending on your birth, or status. Anna, the heroine, was a lovely young lady with much to offer, except status! It was very enjoyable to follow her as she moved from her small town all the way to London, without losing her ability to see things in a positive light. It was a wonderful reminder for all of us to always look to see the best in our circumstances and in those around us.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had not read this genre in some time. It is not Jane Austen but neither is it preaching disguised as fiction. I was drawn into the story and found it hard to put the book down until the conclusion. I've since read several more books and find them all to be worth reading. Not as good as this one yet, but far better than the smaltz that used be passed off in the 'inspirational' category. Congrats to Ms. Gouge on a job well done.

I liked the development of the romance between the couple and the attraction that slowly develops. Especially when the major discovers his attraction. I really recommend this to people who love close to the 19th century setting and pride and prejudice story.
I had a really hard time getting through this book. It just did not hold my interest well. Everyone's personalities were excessive. For example, Anna was too nice and too accepting of the things around her. I really did not like how it ended.

Cute book, a bit in your face on the Christian themes, but considering that is it's genre it wasn't that bad.

Overall it was just a nice read to pass the time, which is all you need sometimes.

Rating: PG
Rationale: There aren't any really adult only stuff, but it is a book about adults.

Too much Pollyanna, relentlessly upbeat attitude is enough to weary my soul. Lots of Christian references, characters are fine, except for female protagonist who is annoying. Happy ending.

I enjoyed the stodgy bitter mom who comes around. they stood up claimed what everyone thought and wanted. enjoyable read even if regency is not your thing.

The story was sweet, but not very imaginative. Many romantic thoughts, but no actions. Hand holding was as brazen as they dared.
