Where to start?

The another Harlequin suspense novel I read recently Shades of Desire set the bar of expectations pretty low for me especially in terms of characterisations, and this one passed the test with flying colours.

Against the Sun by Kat Martin,

For me it was okay. Ms. Martin comes up with some fairly decent plots and the writing and editing has continued to improve since her early books.

Sage Dumont is a strong, smart woman that works as a VP in her family's oil company but of course when she meets Jake she turns into a whimpering, breathless female. Jake Cantrell is definitely my type of man. I love big strong alpha's and he fits that description all the way.
I am a self professed romance-aholic. I love my romance hot and steamy and it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of intrigue.

That being said, this book had all of the above. Jake and Sage were hot from their very first meeting and they hadn't even gotten to the sex. They have the kind of chemistry that just leaps off the pages at you. We owe that to Kat Martin's wonderful writing.

I think I need to quit reading romance novels, because the men in these books are just too much.

TOO MUCH, people.

In this case, we have Jake Cantrell (seriously ... the name alone, right?), an ex Marine now working in a sort of private investigations / protection capacity. He is all man. Tall, big (yes, BIG in exactly That Way). Growly and manly and virile. And HOT.

It was a pleasure to review, Against The Sun (The Raines of Wind Canyon) by Kat Martin. This is a book from The AGAINST Series and can stand alone without having to read another book in the series before since Kat doesn't just throw names from other books without a small description so the reader isn't lost. After you read this book though, you will want to read the rest of the series to learn about the fascinating people of the Atlas Security Firm. Not only does this storyline take you through the meeting and developing relationship of the two main characters, Sage and Jake, but also introduces the reader to quite a few subplots—ex-fiancés, bombings, drug smuggling; as well as people I am hoping will be following with possibly their own books since they were written so well and makes a person very much interested in getting to know more about those storylines.

Everyone in this book has a purpose for being there and they aren't just thrown in to fill in space. Ms. Martin has a way of introducing people long enough to hook you into wanting more and more about them without you wondering where the character has disappeared to a few pages later.

Sage Dumont is a woman who worked her way up in her grandfather's oil company. She comes off as a rich girl with an attitude until you find out more about her childhood and the life she had. She is feisty and very driven yet not as all-knowing as she thinks when her world and Jake's world collide. Jake Cantrell is an alpha romance hero who is more then just what people assume when they meet him, he's not some caveman-type who tries to take over any for egocentric reasons. He realizes that to get where she is in the industry, Sage has had to become a strong and determined woman and he finds his own way to work with her even though she thinks she can do it herself. It's fun to read Jake and Sage's points of view change and mature from the beginning of their relationship as the story progresses.

I always think if a book can play out like a well-written movie then the writer has done the job and Ms. Martin has done a fantastic job. Her attention to detail throughout the book allows you to envision everything around the characters and become a supporting character yourself (while staying out of trouble). This book doesn't fail to connect with you when you read it because of her attention to detail and the way she plays the scenes as they follow each other seamlessly. You are drawn into the world of Big Oil Industry and all the players in that world and I couldn't turn pages fast enough to find out what was going on with the subplots and how they merged with the overall larger picture of the story.

Jake Cantrell is good at his job. Private investigator and mercenary, the tough ex-special forces marine has been hired as a bodyguard by Sage Dupont’s grandfather. Sage, an upcoming VP, wants to earn her promotion to president and feels clinching a deal between the Saudis for purchase of used pipe and platform drilling equipment is her key to success. When Jake arrives at the marine Drilling International offices, they get off on a bad start. Sage doesn’t think she needs a bodyguard, but her grandfather feels differently. Furthermore, Cantrell’s uncanny intuition for suspecting shady dealing is aroused, and he’s going to see that Sage is protected.

Initially, Sage must entertain the Saudi sheik’s family and entourage, then negotiate the deal. On the surface things appear to be going well between Sage and the Saudis, but when Jake overhears disturbing news, he fears much more than a transaction for used pipe is in the works. Moreover, he’s attracted to Sage and doesn’t want to compromise her or his position to protect her.

Tension sizzles in this contemporary story. As usual, Ms. Martin has come up with a plot that offers nonstop suspense mixed with the usual high-octane testosterone so prevalent in her books. Both Jake and Sage are nicely drawn, three-dimensional characters a reader can care about. The fast-paced plot is not only fascinating but provides lots of information about Middle Easterners and their customs. I was fascinated.

Secondary characters were great. I became so interested in the hunky PI’s at Trace Rawlins’ company. I can’t wait to read their stories.

Against the Sun has wonderful characters, great pacing and nonstop suspense. And if you like a sexy hero, then Jake Cantrell will satisfy your every craving.

Summary:

Unfortunately, some people are not happy about the deal and her grandfather hires Jake Cantrell to be Sage's bodyguard until the negotiations are complete.

At first, Jake and Sage set each other on edge, but attraction quickly takes over. The more they learn about each other, the more they want each other. Unfortunately, someone doesn't want Sage to make her deal. And to make matters worse, they learn some disturbing information related to the sheik's visit to the U.S. Jake and Sage have to race to find answers. And when its over, neither is sure they'll be able to walk away from each other.

Review:
I liked this book for the most part. I thought it had a more interesting plot than the last book in the series.

The plot is is dual-faceted in that there are two different things going on that Jake and Sage have to find answers. But the two aspects work well together very well. I thought the author did a good job building a fairly realistic, well-developed storyline that kept me interested and reading.

I also enjoyed the two characters. Jake's a sexy loner with a big heart. Sage is a woman with a strong sense of loyalty to her grandfather. And thankfully, she's mostly lacking the TSTL gene the heroines of the previous two books had. These two together had good chemistry and the internal battles they faced over whether they could be together gave the relationship a lot of realism.

Overall, it was a pretty well done story. Nothing absolutely great but above average, definitely. I enjoyed it and it kept me reading, wanting to know how everything would work out. And the author did a good job of setting up the characters for the next trilogy. I'll be looking forward to reading about them.(less)

Kat Martin provides the reader with another instalment in the Raines of Wind Canyon series. This one like its predecessors is full of suspense and passion but I felt it did drag a little in the middle with a lot of repetitive ‘I want you but you’re unavailable’ material.

The book has some great characters you can really get invested in. I was rooting for Jake from the beginning. He’s an alpha with a moral code who wasn’t prepared to get in a relationship with Sage the heroine whilst she was engaged to another man. Sage was a nice heroine as well. Nice but a little one-dimensional in that I felt things came too easily for her. I would have like to have seen a little more angst in her relationships. For instance when she ended her engagement by telephone everything just fell into place with Jake soon after.

The book had some great action scenes filled with protests, threats, violence, kidnapping, drug smuggling and attempted murder.

The love scenes were sizzling hot. Jake and Sage really got it on when they got it on! For a good part of the book they are convincing themselves that any relationship between them just wouldn’t work long term and it was rewarding to see them finally realise they were meant for each other and balanced each others personas out.

The secondary characters were fantastic almost outshining the main protagonists at times in fact at times I was drawn more to the other female characters than Sage. I found myself wanting to read more about them and can’t wait for their stories. The villain and his co-conspirator who were apparent right from the start were just the right amount of not necessarily evil as the book is light .. but creepy.

Against the Sun also gives us some insight into both the customs and roles of Saudi Arabian families and the worldwide oil industry which was very more interesting and added to the book.

I enjoyed Against the Sun. Martin writes romantic suspense as well as she did historical romance. The book was light and entertaining for an afternoon read but perhaps not the best of the series. However it really did hook me and make me want to go out and buy the next in the series as I want to read more about Jakes friends at Atlas Security Firm.

In this novel we finally get Jack Cantrell’s story. He is a former special force marine who now works security jobs all over the world. He loves the ladies and respects them, but has no intention of settling down. Recently he has been doing work for his buddy’s security business in Houston. The tale begins with him arriving at the offices of Marine Drilling International. He has been asked to act as bodyguard for Sage Elizabeth Durmont as she entertains a Saudi sheik and his family. She is negotiating a multi-million dollar deal to buy a used oil drill platform and piping. She needs to understand customs, and be protected from those who oppose the deal. Sage doesn’t think she needs Jack’s help, but her grandfather insists. She plans on letting this sexy jar-head know exactly who the boss is. Jack is not happy with having to deal with the breathtakingly beautiful and privileged executive. He figures she is a spoiled brat, who got her position due to birth. The tale that unfolds is filled with sexual tension and action packed drama, as threats are made against Sage and the sheik.

Martin provides well fleshed out characters who make the tale feel genuine. Sage at times got on my nerves. Her wavering on decisions in her personal life made me crazy. I know she is a careful planner, but as a top executive in a cut throat business, I expected her to make decisions and stick with them. I did love the way she did what was morally right, even at the cost of business. Jake is complicated, and always in motion. He has a strong moral compass and despite some Neanderthal tendencies is completely swoon-worthy. They are both convinced that what they have is a fling and that it could never work. Watching the two of them discover that with love all things are possible, was fantastic! Other characters including the Sheik’s family helped round out the tale and make the drama compelling.

The story line is fast paced, and there are many different components. All of which kept me delightful engaged. There is the business deal and a fiance' to deal with. The sheik's daughter is delightful and I loved her story line. The son is dark and his tale is filled with danger. The attacks occurring could be related to the deal or a personal attack against Sage. Watching Jack and his team piece together the clue and save the day was an awesome ride. Martin has an amazing ability to weave different plot threads together creating suspense and mystery. She has created a group of male characters that woman cannot help but fall in love with. I adore that she pairs them with strong, capable woman.

I recommend Against the Sun and the Raines of Canyon series to fans of romantic suspense and swoon-worthy men. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Kat Martin writes romances novels in all genres from paranormal to historical. I have read quite a few and enjoyed them, so be sure and check them out.

Sage Dumont might be a rich, worldwise business woman, but having to deal with all the ins and outs of the Saudi Arabian deal she is working on is almost too much. Having the addition of the super sexy bodyguard, Jake Cantrell stirring up her life, Sage finds there is more than just business to life.

Jake had expected a rich socialite when he took on the job of protecting Sage Dumont. As time went on, he realized there were hidden depths to the woman he just needed to explore.

I love the Against series from Kat Martin.

There is always a plot outside of the romance. This one involves a Saudi-Arabian Sheik and a purchase of a drilling plat form. The Sheik brings his two grown Holden along while he is negotiating with Sage Delmont, VP of Marine Drilling.

Sage's grandfather knows there could be potential trouble by bringing a Saudi family into Houston. So he hires Atlas Security to help during the negotiation. Jake Cantrell used to be in Special Forces. He is very familiar with Middle Eastern protocols. He wants Jake to help Sage through the negotiations helping with the proper protocols in dealing with the Sheik and offering any protection should it be needed.

Sage isn't happy about having a bodyguard around but recognizes that she doesn't know how to act and speak around the Sheik and doesnt want to offend him or his family that he is also bringing. She also isn't happy about the strong sexual attraction she feels for this big brute of a man, after all she is engaged to a nice man who is what she thinks society would expect her to marry.

Jake is also very attracted to Sage but doesn't mess with engaged women. So he decides he is just going to do his job in teaching Sage what she needs to know for the Sheik's visit and providing protection duty.

Things don't quite go as planned though.. There is a bombing, drug trafficking, internal conflict between the Sheik and his daughter.

The romance between Sage and Jake was hot and didn't develop too soon. I think the author also did a fantastic job of showing the Saudi's customs for both the men and the women.

The best part was finding out she is going to write another 3 books in this series. We got to meet Alex and Sabrina in this book and their book is sure to be full of fireworks between these two.(less)

Against the Sun is titillating romantic trash, masquerading as a suspense novel. Its narrative is entirely predictable, without a single twist or turn that couldn't be readily anticipated. I elected reluctantly to read the entire book for no other reason than to be fair in my review. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. My only solace is that this novel is part of the series "The Raines of Wind Canyon," so I know enough to avoid the rest of the collection.

Another book in this seires that i found hard to put down.I find it amazing that anyone can come up with several different plots all going on at the same time.A lot going on,but it all comes together.Kat Martin is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.And I know there are a few more coming in this seires that she let us know about in the back of the book.I am looking forward to the next installment.

This series has departed from the Raines and now is drifting through their various friends. This one actually had a feel of a Sandra Brown to me in that it was based in Texas and involved an oil business, but it managed to pull it off in a post-9/11 world instead of the old 80's oil tycoon stories. I thought the motivation for the "bad guy" was never fully explained and I thought more could have gone into some of the side stories with the Sheik's daughter, but all in all a solid addition to this...more

A nice addition to the series, though not one of my favorites. The characters and their romance were just okay; nothing spectacular, though. Even the suspense seemed a bit tame--I thought it was way too easy to figure out the bad guy in this one. By the time the main characters caught on I kind of hand that "what took you so long?" feeling. This book by Kat Martin wasn't as exciting as the previous "Against" books. The characters were a little shallow and the action a little flat. It wasn't a bad book just not a great one either. Hopefully the next installment of the series will be better.

Interesting plot. Loved Jake (the main male character), but hated Sage (the main female). She was obnoxious and not up to par with the other female leads in this series. Still looking forward to the next books though!

I was kinda let down in this book for some reason. Usually with this series I didnt want to put the book down but this one just didnt hold my interest like the other ones did. But Kat is a wonderful writter and yes as soon as the next one comes out I will be buying it!!

It was a good addition to the series, but not one of her best. I loved Jake Cantrell, but Sage was seemed to think she was better than him. I don't like that in a heroine.

I've enjoyed Kat Martin very much in the past. But I found this one to be fun, but formulaic. I found myself rolling my eyes at the cliches a bit too much.
