Millions of lives are on the line. But for him, only one truly matters.

It's not in bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job description to share his suspicions with his assignments. Beautiful executive Sage Dumont may be in charge, but Jake's not on her payroll. As a former special forces marine, Jake trusts his gut, and it's telling him there's something off about a shipment arrivi

Where to start?

The another Harlequin suspense novel I read recently Shades of Desire set the bar of expectations pretty low for me especially in terms of characterisations, and this one passed the test with flying colours.

Both Jake and Sage (I had to check their names from the blurb and I only finished reading this book a couple of hours ago) stayed consistent to their original characterisations. Whatever they learned during this story--that would be to love and cherish each other despite the r

Sage Dumont needs to win a contract for used drilling equipment to ensure her promotion. Somebody wants her to fail, and it's bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job to see that nothing goes wrong. But when Jake and Sage stumble upon a plot more deadly than they can imagine, the ante is upped and they must combine forces just to survive.

Jake Cantrell is good at his job. Private investigator and mercenary, the tough ex-special forces marine has

Against the Sun is the sixth novel in the Raines of Wind Canyon series by Kat Martin. These are romantic suspense novels which deal with ex-military men and the woman who capture their hearts. Each is designed to be read as a standalone. As always this reader prefers to read them in order. I like to get a sense of all the players and enjoy knowing the back-history. Against the Sun held my attention from page one and I was swept away.

In this novel we finally get Jack Cantrell’s story. He is a fo

I think I need to quit reading romance novels, because the men in these books are just too much.

TOO MUCH, people.

In this case, we have Jake Cantrell (seriously ... the name alone, right?), an ex Marine now working in a sort of private investigations / protection capacity. He is all man. Tall, big (yes, BIG in exactly That Way). Growly and manly and virile. And HOT.

He has been assigned to protect Sage Dumont (is it wrong that every time I saw her name, I pictured a Thanksgiving turkey, with its c

Can you ever mix business with pleasure successfully?

Sage Dumont learned the oil business from the bottom floor up and earned her position. She is determined to close the biggest deal ever for the family business and nothing will stop this Texas family from moving into the Middle East oil territory. No amount of threats, bad press, or a hot bodyguard is going to distract her. Wait Jake Cantrell is my bodyguard, not my personal dream of a man right. The one thing Jake knows is how to do security

Probably my first mistake was not recognizing this as a romance novel. I thought I'd try a thriller written by a woman...but all this book did was annoy my (usually latent) feminist side. Apparently what women readers want is for a huge man (the book can't stop about how big the hero is) to come and lead us around. He is constantly putting his large hand on the small of the heroine's back and directing her places, which fills her with relief. Amidst ordering her food for her (which she also find ...more

Me too! :D

It was a pleasure to review, Against The Sun (The Raines of Wind Canyon) by Kat Martin. This is a book from The AGAINST Series and can stand alone without having to read another book in the series before since Kat doesn't just throw names from other books without a small description so the reader isn't lost. After you read this book though, you will want to read the rest of the series to learn about the fascinating people of the Atlas Security Firm. No
A little better than the last book in the series, but not quite as good as the first book in the second trilogy of this series.

Series Note:
Sixth book in the "Raines of Wind Canyon" series, and third book in the second trilogy of the series. I don't think you have to have read the other books first. They stand pretty well on their own.

Sage Dumont, one of the vice presidents of her family's Marine Drilling corporation, is about to close on a huge deal to buy some used drilling equipment fr

Jake Cantrell's job was to watch over Ian Dumonds granddaughter while the Saudia Arabia sheik was in town with his family.
Sage Elizabeth didn't think she needed a bodyguard.
She's engaged to Phillip so Jake is not a threat to getting serious over.
Interesting to learn so much about Muslims and their customs.
Sage has them lined up to shop one day where the stores they want to visit will shut down to the public while they are

Against the Sun is titillating romantic trash, masquerading as a suspense novel. Its narrative is entirely predictable, without a single twist or turn that couldn't be readily anticipated. I elected reluctantly to read the entire book for no other reason than to be fair in my review. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. My only solace is that this novel is part of the series "The Raines of Wind Canyon," so I know enough to avoid the rest of the collection.

Jake Cantrell is introduced as another member of the special forces team. As a bodyguard/everything else he protects Sage from herself mostly. Good suspense. Good romance.

Good book. Jake has been hired by Sage's grandfather to be her bodyguard while she is participating in negotiations with a Saudi prince. Sage isn't at all happy about it and makes her feelings clear to Jake. He isn't too thrilled with her either, but an assignment is an assignment.

Jake and Sage get off to a rough start. Sage doesn't think she needs protection or help from Jake. He didn't make the best first impression when he mistook her for the receptionist and she isn't going to forget it. Sag

This digital review copy was supplied to me free by Harlequin through Netgalley. The review constitutes my own thoughts on the book.

Kat Martin provides the reader with another instalment in the Raines of Wind Canyon series. This one like its predecessors is full of suspense and passion but I felt it did drag a little in the middle with a lot of repetitive ‘I want you but you’re unavailable’ material.

The book has some great characters you can really get invested in. I was rooting for Jake from th

Jake Cantrell was big, really big, and at six foot five and two hundred thirty pounds most people gave him a wide berth! when his dad died he worked his tale off helping his mom on their Iowa farm. The minute she married her old flame, the guy she didn't choose Jake knew he needed to get away as he looked so much like his dad that he'd have problems, He enlisted in the Marines and eventually found his niche as a sharp shooter, when he got out he hooked up with Trace Rawlins, an ex-ranger and wor ...more

These books are continuously driving me insane!! I am constantly tapping my foot as I sit waiting, NOT patiently, for the next book to come out. They're like a drug you can't get enough of, and each one is a new hit (not that I would know but I'm sure it's similar....). In this novel of Martin's, Jake Cantrell is his usual badass former Marine self, but he is making the effort to become a part of the community and his friends' lives again. Sage Dumont finally has the chance to prove herself to h ...more

Against the Sun by Kat Martin,

For me it was okay. Ms. Martin comes up with some fairly decent plots and the writing and editing has continued to improve since her early books.

Sage Dumont is a strong, smart woman that works as a VP in her family's oil company but of course when she meets Jake she turns into a whimpering, breathless female. One thing that annoys me is that it happens from the very first meeting. They become breathless and hot and hard and ..... you get it, from their first meeti

It was a great book ,i really enjoyed reading about Jake Cantrell .

I was so happy when i found out that Jake got his own book ,he's such a cool and interesting character ,i really liked where they took his story ,when he first meets Sage that was so great ,they really have some hot and steamy scenes and the chemistry between the two of them was so explosive ,they make a great couple.

Sage is a great character who has a lot of faults ,i mean she was gonna marry a man just because she wanted to get

The story is solid with multiple and cohesive plot lines but there was nothing new about everything. While i was interested in knowing the mystery and story about the sheiks and the relationship between Jake and Sage i felt like i had to drag my eyes to keep on reading instead of falling asleep. There were too many monologues being written from both jake and sage sides that i skipped. During the first few chapters I rolled my eyes every time Jake and sage were amazed with each other. After reading Against the Wild, I decided to go back and start at the beginning, only to find that there must be something before this one that tells Trace and Maggie's story. At any rate, I enjoyed Jake and Sage's story, although the Alaskan setting in Against the Wild was vastly more interesting than the Houston setting in this one. The Saudi element (I assume Ms. Martin did the great research for it that she did for hiking in Alaska) was an eye-opener. I knew some of the stuff about Muslims, ...more

Read this before Against the Law and it wasn't any better. I could see absolutely no reason for the interest between the leads. The idea that the negotiations with a middle eastern minor royalty would be handled only by a woman - even if she is a senior vice president and the owner's granddaughter - is strange. That an oil company would know so little about dealing with middle easterners, and that they would wait until a few days before the in person meetings to learn basic stuff like how to add ...more

Sage Dumont, heiress and executive of a major Houston oil firm, is about to negotiate a major deal for piping and other offshore equipment with a Saudi shiek. Much to Sage's chagrin, her grandfather hires as her bodyguard Jake Cantrell, former Marine special forces. As the story leaks of the impending arrival of the sheik and his family, Jake discovers very sinister goings-on--starting from various protests and picketing to more dire issues which involve the sheik's son and entourage.

Jake Cantrell is definitely my type of man. I love big strong alpha's and he fits that description all the way.
I am a self professed romance-aholic. I love my romance hot and steamy and it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of intrigue.

That being said, this book had all of the above. Jake and Sage were hot from their very first meeting and they hadn't even gotten to the sex. They have the kind of chemistry that just leaps off the pages at you. We owe that to Kat Martin's wonderful writing.

Sage had a rough beginning to life but has earned her way up the office ladder to be in contention for Vice President of the family oil business. She just has to land a deal with Sheik Khalid AlKahzaz. Grandfather Ian, has hired a body guard for her while the Sheik is in town.
Jake Cantrell, tall, muscular and not interested in spoiled rich girls.
Sage easily earns his respect as she grows to fall for Jake. That means a broken engagement and a sharp left turn in her life plans.

While oil deals are probably happening everyday, how much do we really know about what goes on? Well this storyline introduces the reader to a young woman trying to broker a deal with an Arab country for some used oil equipment. Her grandfather is worried and hires a bodyguard for her. She doesn't like it but sees no way of talking her grandfather out of it. What's interesting is what she has to learn about the Arab culture before entering the negotiations. Of course, there's a bunch of protesto ...more
