Millions of lives are on the line. But for him, only one truly matters.

It's not in bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job description to share his suspicions with his assignments. Beautiful executive Sage Dumont may be in charge, but Jake's not on her payroll. As a former special forces marine, Jake trusts his gut, and it's telling him there's something off about a shipment arrivin...more

Where to start?

The another Harlequin suspense novel I read recently Shades of Desire set the bar of expectations pretty low for me especially in terms of characterisations, and this one passed the test with flying colours.

Both Jake and Sage (I had to check their names from the blurb and I only finished reading this book a couple of hours ago) stayed consistent to their original characterisations. Whatever they learned during this story--that would be to love and cherish each other despite the r...more

Sage Dumont needs to win a contract for used drilling equipment to ensure her promotion. Somebody wants her to fail, and it's bodyguard Jake Cantrell's job to see that nothing goes wrong. But when Jake and Sage stumble upon a plot more deadly than they can imagine, the ante is upped and they must combine forces just to survive.

Jake Cantrell is good at his job. Private investigator and mercenary, the tough ex-special forces marine has...more

Can you ever mix business with pleasure successfully?

Sage Dumont learned the oil business from the bottom floor up and earned her position. She is determined to close the biggest deal ever for the family business and nothing will stop this Texas family from moving into the Middle East oil territory. No amount of threats, bad press, or a hot bodyguard is going to distract her. Wait Jake Cantrell is my bodyguard, not my personal dream of a man right. The one thing Jake knows is how to do security...more

I think I need to quit reading romance novels, because the men in these books are just too much.

TOO MUCH, people.

In this case, we have Jake Cantrell (seriously ... the name alone, right?), an ex Marine now working in a sort of private investigations / protection capacity. He is all man. Tall, big (yes, BIG in exactly That Way). Growly and manly and virile. And HOT.

He has been assigned to protect Sage Dumont (is it wrong that every time I saw her name, I pictured a Thanksgiving turkey, with its c...more

Against the Sun is the sixth novel in the Raines of Wind Canyon series by Kat Martin. These are romantic suspense novels which deal with ex-military men and the woman who capture their hearts. Each is designed to be read as a standalone. As always this reader prefers to read them in order. I like to get a sense of all the players and enjoy knowing the back-history. Against the Sun held my attention from page one and I was swept away.

In this novel we finally get Jack Cantrell’s story. He is a fo...more

A little better than the last book in the series, but not quite as good as the first book in the second trilogy of this series.

Series Note:
Sixth book in the "Raines of Wind Canyon" series, and third book in the second trilogy of the series. I don't think you have to have read the other books first. They stand pretty well on their own.

Summary:
Sage Dumont, one of the vice presidents of her family's Marine Drilling corporation, is about to close on a huge deal to buy some used drilling equipment fr...more

Jake Cantrell's job was to watch over Ian Dumonds granddaughter while the Saudia Arabia sheik was in town with his family.
Sage Elizabeth didn't think she needed a bodyguard.
She's engaged to Phillip so Jake is not a threat to getting serious over.
Interesting to learn so much about Muslims and their customs.
Sage has them lined up to shop one day where the stores they want to visit will shut down to the public while they are...more

After reading Against the Wild, I decided to go back and start at the beginning, only to find that there must be something before this one that tells Trace and Maggie's story. At any rate, I enjoyed Jake and Sage's story, although the Alaskan setting in Against the Wild was vastly more interesting than the Houston setting in this one. The Saudi element (I assume Ms. Martin did the great research for it that she did for hiking in Alaska) was an eye-opener. I knew some of the stuff about Muslims,...more

Against the Sun is titillating romantic trash, masquerading as a suspense novel. Its narrative is entirely predictable, without a single twist or turn that couldn't be readily anticipated. I elected reluctantly to read the entire book for no other reason than to be fair in my review. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. My only solace is that this novel is part of the series "The Raines of Wind Canyon," so I know enough to avoid the rest of the collection.

Against the Sun is a story in The Raines of Wind Canyon series. Jake is an ex-marine who is working as a body guard for Trace. He has been hired by Sage's grandfather to keep her safe during negotiations with a sheikh. This was a good story with a little bit of mystery as to who set the bomb. However I didn't feel the same chemistry between the main characters that was in Against the Fire.
My favorite scene is when Rina brings a special guest to see Sage and Jake, His reaction was priceless.

Not as good as the other books I've read in the series. Storyline wasn't one of my favorites and there were so many errors - word tenses, words out of order, missing words and at least one instant when it was said to be Sage's father when it should have been grandfather.
Looking forward to reading the other books in the series and hope they go back to the way they were. Liked Jake but didn't always like Sage although they did have undeniable chemistry. There was a happily ever after of course too...more

Jake Cantrell was big, really big, and at six foot five and two hundred thirty pounds most people gave him a wide berth! when his dad died he worked his tale off helping his mom on their Iowa farm. The minute she married her old flame, the guy she didn't choose Jake knew he needed to get away as he looked so much like his dad that he'd have problems, He enlisted in the Marines and eventually found his niche as a sharp shooter, when he got out he hooked up with Trace Rawlins, an ex-ranger and wor...more

Against the Sun by Kat Martin,

For me it was okay. Ms. Martin comes up with some fairly decent plots and the writing and editing has continued to improve since her early books.

Sage Dumont is a strong, smart woman that works as a VP in her family's oil company but of course when she meets Jake she turns into a whimpering, breathless female. One thing that annoys me is that it happens from the very first meeting. They become breathless and hot and hard and ..... you get it, from their first meeti...more

Jake Cantrell is definitely my type of man. I love big strong alpha's and he fits that description all the way.
I am a self professed romance-aholic. I love my romance hot and steamy and it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of intrigue.

That being said, this book had all of the above. Jake and Sage were hot from their very first meeting and they hadn't even gotten to the sex. They have the kind of chemistry that just leaps off the pages at you. We owe that to Kat Martin's wonderful writing.

The story is solid with multiple and cohesive plot lines but there was nothing new about everything. While i was interested in knowing the mystery and story about the sheiks and the relationship between Jake and Sage i felt like i had to drag my eyes to keep on reading instead of falling asleep. There were too many monologues being written from both jake and sage sides that i skipped. During the first few chapters I rolled my eyes every time Jake and sage were amazed with each other. And in real...more

This is the 6th book in the series. The first 3 were about the Raines Brothers. This last set have revolved around ex-military men who who now work for a private-investigator firm.

Sage Dumont works for her grandfather in Houston at Marine Drilling International. She has worked hard to work her way up in the company based on her job performance and not her last name. She thinks she has the perfect job and is engaged to the perfect man. She manages to land a deal to negotiate buying a drilling pl...more

This digital review copy was supplied to me free by Harlequin through Netgalley. The review constitutes my own thoughts on the book.

Kat Martin provides the reader with another instalment in the Raines of Wind Canyon series. This one like its predecessors is full of suspense and passion but I felt it did drag a little in the middle with a lot of repetitive ‘I want you but you’re unavailable’ material.

The book has some great characters you can really get invested in. I was rooting for Jake from th...more

It was a pleasure to review, Against The Sun (The Raines of Wind Canyon) by Kat Martin. This is a book from The AGAINST Series and can stand alone without having to read another book in the series before since Kat doesn't just throw names from other books without a small description so the reader isn't lost. After you read this book though, you will want to read the rest of the series to learn about the fascinating people of the Atlas Security Firm. No...more

Sage Dumont, heiress and executive of a major Houston oil firm, is about to negotiate a major deal for piping and other offshore equipment with a Saudi shiek. Much to Sage's chagrin, her grandfather hires as her bodyguard Jake Cantrell, former Marine special forces. As the story leaks of the impending arrival of the sheik and his family, Jake discovers very sinister goings-on--starting from various protests and picketing to more dire issues which involve the sheik's son and entourage.

These books are continuously driving me insane!! I am constantly tapping my foot as I sit waiting, NOT patiently, for the next book to come out. They're like a drug you can't get enough of, and each one is a new hit (not that I would know but I'm sure it's similar....). In this novel of Martin's, Jake Cantrell is his usual badass former Marine self, but he is making the effort to become a part of the community and his friends' lives again. Sage Dumont finally has the chance to prove herself to h...more

Jake Cantrell is hired by Ian Dumont to be a bodyguard for his granddaughter, Sage. He is the CEO of Marine Drilling and Sage is brokering a deal with a Saudi Arabian Sheik to buy oil drilling equipment. Many problems arise during the Sheik's visit, including protests, drug deals, and the Sheik's daughter who runs away. All this leads to love for Jake and Sage with problems along the way including who doesn't want this deal to happen. The ending solves all the problems and love wins.

Sage had a rough beginning to life but has earned her way up the office ladder to be in contention for Vice President of the family oil business. She just has to land a deal with Sheik Khalid AlKahzaz. Grandfather Ian, has hired a body guard for her while the Sheik is in town.
Jake Cantrell, tall, muscular and not interested in spoiled rich girls.
Sage easily earns his respect as she grows to fall for Jake. That means a broken engagement and a sharp left turn in her life plans.

Enjoyed this book, Sage and Trace were a believable couple and it was fun watching them get together. Really enjoyed the background information on the culture of the Middle East , it was clear that Kat Martin did her homework in providing this info. Overall a good instalment to a great series.

A nice addition to the series, though not one of my favorites. The characters and their romance were just okay; nothing spectacular, though. Even the suspense seemed a bit tame--I thought it was way too easy to figure out the bad guy in this one. By the time the main characters caught on I kind of hand that "what took you so long?" feeling. I did enjoy the addition of the sheik and his family--nice cultural details in that story line--and both Sage's friend Rina and the sheik's daughter A'lia we...more

Sage Dumont might be a rich, worldwise business woman, but having to deal with all the ins and outs of the Saudi Arabian deal she is working on is almost too much. Having the addition of the super sexy bodyguard, Jake Cantrell stirring up her life, Sage finds there is more than just business to life.

Jake had expected a rich socialite when he took on the job of protecting Sage Dumont. As time went on, he realized there were hidden depths to the woman he just needed to explore.

For the most part,...more
