Amma is a witch but she is something more. She is a half breed of some kind. She doesn't know who or what her father was. She had been hired by a dwarf called The Collector to steal The Dragon Chalice. In order to steal the chalice she must become The Chalice Keeper's lover. Joarr, the chalice keeper, is a good looking alpha dragon. While Joarr sleeps she steals the chalice and sells it to the dwarf for information on her father. So here's the situation: Amma is an attractive witch. Joarr is a sexy dragon. Amma stole Joarr's chalice. Joarr wants it back.

That was what the plot of The Witch Thief could have been if Lori Devoti had wanted to write a nice simple book with some sexy scenes in it. And frankly, that's what romance novels are supposed to be. Yes, romance novels are my guilty pleasure--that's how I know what to look for in them.

Anyway, instead of taking the simple route, the author waaaaaay overcomplicated things

In Devoti’s paranormal romance novel, Joarr Enge is a dragon-shifter in charge of protecting the chalice of his kind. But when he becomes entangled with Amma, a witch out to steal the chalice, he loses his focus and the chalice disappears. One hundred years later the opportunity presents itself to regain possession of the sacred chalice and he is willing to make whatever sacrifice he must to achieve it. Amma wants only to uncover the secrets of her past. For Amma and Joarr to achieve their goals ...more

Though I found the tension and romance lacking it was still a great adventure and I did enjoy it.
I wouldn't call it a page turner but I think some of the thing Ms. Devoti had in her world were interesting and unique.
I had a hard time getting into this one. I didn't care for either of the main characters and didn't really care why they both disappeared for 100 years. In the end this one just wasn't for me.
I gave up on this book about a 3rd of the way through it. It wasn't going anywhere or doing anything. I was confused by the character's actions.
