When a young Muslim high school student is accused of a crime she didn’t commit, her school counselor gets involved to clear her record in this ripped-from-the-headlines thriller from the author of Vanished in the Night.

When Lily Simon finds cops in the lobby of the high school where she’s a guidance counselor, she’s not surprised: cops and adolescents go together like sex

You have to admire an author that will take on a sensitive subject and do their best to portray a story while showing all sides, particularly of the moment as this book ultimately deals with prejudice and fear: fear of differences, fear of the unknown, and even fear of our own reactions to those issues. Eileen Carr has done all of that and more in this engaging tale suitable for teen through adult readers.

Starting with a courtroom scene where Jamila Khoury, a Muslim high school student is on tr

“A veil doesn’t make me a terrorist any more than it makes me a good Muslim. It’s a symbol.”

In Veiled Intentions Eileen Carr paints a poignant picture of how a small lie and lack of faith in humanity can create discord among people and wreak havoc in a peaceful town. After finishing reading it last week, I have been mulling over how best to put my thoughts forward regarding this sensitive

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction...The chain reaction of evil-hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars-must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."

This Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote sums up the message of Eileen Carr's novel, Veiled Intentions.

It 's a story really amazing, once you start you can not put it down. With great intelligence and sensitivity the author touches really delicate issues as racial hatred, bullying, teenagers with problems of alcohol and drug abuse, pedophilia.
Lily Simon is a school counselor in the quiet town of Darby. One day in school arrive two policemen: is not unusual for a high school, the boys sometimes combine some trouble with alcohol and drugs. But it is strange that they are looking Jamila Khaury, one

I was provided with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Beginning with a compellingly impactful court scene, the storyline takes us through a set of events beginning on a fateful night when a young war veteran in Afghanistan is hit and run over, putting him into a coma. The police rest their suspicions on a high-school student, Jamila. Although Jamila denies the charges, no further efforts are taken up to find out what happened that night. Jamila's parents sue the police

I received a free kindle copy of Veiled Intentions by Eileen Carr published by Pocket Star from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.

This intense story covered many moral issues about man's inhumanity to man. It touched on deeply seated prejudices based on the unknown. It also investigated how quickly the public forum can turn for or against an issue. The young Muslim girl, Jamila is falsely charged with a hit & run accident where she supposedly left behind a wounded man who just happened

I requested a copy from Netgalley because the subject matter (a Muslim girl arrested for a hit-and-run of a white army vet, and the prejudice/racism that results) interested me. I have to admit, though, that I DNF this after reading it halfway through. The story is told mostly from the point of view of Lily, a teacher at the school where the Muslim girl was arrested, but with the POVs of several teens thrown into the mix—I had a hard time figuring out just who this story was aimed at, adults or ...more

A first-rate, fast-paced, astute exploration of a controversial subject. The novel struck the right tone from beginning to end; empathetic, honest, galvanizing, heartfelt, and ultimately inspiring. I think most people will not be able to walk away from this book without some of their own soul-searching. Veiled Intentions, thankfully, is in capable hands. Brilliant.

When I read a book and can see vivid images in my mind and when I'm thinking about a book days after I've completed it, then I know I read a great book. Veiled Intentions is one of those great books. The author has taken a complex and combustible social issue and and woven it into a mystery that kept my attention and made me think. Carr really hit it right on with this one!

Eileen hits it out of the park with Veiled Intentions. This book is not what I anticipated at all. I expected a linear story told from one POV, and I love that what I got turns every expectation on its eat. This story unfolds in a most unexpected way, leaving me guessing until the end as to whose trial Lily was giving testimony at, and what had really happened. One of my must reads of the year.

I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. Okay, so I wasn't born there. I was born in Dayton, Ohio, but moved when I was four, and who remembers anything from before they were four? Except I do remember I was born at the Good Samartian Hospital across the street from Baskin Robbins because they sent me a coupon for a free ice cream cone every year until I was twelve. I make a point of remembering anything ...more
