Marci Shimoff has written a great book on how to be unconditionally happy. Using stories from her own life and from the 100 genuinely happy people she interviewed, she demonstrates how it's possible to be happy regardless of external circumstances.

She provides 21 "happiness habits" that can be practiced by anyone to help them achieve deep and lasting happiness, rather than the fleeting kind based on external things that so many people experience today. Some of my favorites are:

I have no reason to like this book. It's got more than three strikes against it, after all, but it spoke to me - so I bought it.

Strike one: I REALLY don't like seeing the authors' faces on the covers of their books. For some reason it seems completely feigned.

Strike two: She's got some connection to the chicken soup for the soul books which I despise. AND

Strike three: She likes the book "The Secret" - a book that's full of...malarkey.

I remember skimming the library self-help section in a brain-dead daze. I was twelve? no, thirteen-years-old? when I read this book.

As hard as it is to believe, I was suffering from severe depression. No, it was not your typical "teenage blues". What an amazing book. If you have not gotten to the point in your life of, "How can I be truly happy?" than this is NOT the book for you. This is one of those books that offers something for everyone. If one tool doesn't work or resonate another one will. I've just skimmed the beginning, but so far this lady REALLY wants you to know that she was a contributor to Chicken Soup for the Women's Soul and that she had something to do with the book The Secret. Oy... not a good way to build credibility with me. At least it's a library book. But, it got such good reviews that I'll give it a little longer.

When i bought it i had a different idea how it would be. I don't like this kind of "help" book. I thought it would be a fun reading but instead give us a list of instructions to be happy. Not my thing. Write things that make us feel unhapy, etc. But reading the reviews from here, maybe i need to give it a second chance.
I found this book super valuable. It was recommended to me by a friend when I was having a really rough time of feeling good ever. At first I was skeptical but it came at just the right time in my learning process. I was over-the-top unhappy and needed some ideas to get back on track. Do not judge this book by its cover. Littered with personal stories from the "Happy 100", this book shows the depth of research and understanding the author has on the subject of being happy for no reason. If you are looking to be that person, then this book is for you.
While anecdotes, recollections and interviews constitute the majority of this book, and most of the techniques in the book are not original, it is nice to have so many useful and practical suggestions and methods gathered together in one place and conveyed in a way that most "normal" people can understand. I would give this book a five, but I am being a little more conservative with my ratings these days.

I am not up to date on my book list, but I wanted to take a moment to recommend this book. I really enjoyed focusing more on happiness. This book was amazing! Marci and Carol make the topic such an interesting subject matter and easy to follow. The 7 steps that are mentioned are both greatly explained and simple enough to incorporate into your daily life.
I am continuously incorporating the various techniques and even researching some that I see work better for me than others to ensure that those are truly part of my everyday rituals so that like the Happy 100, I am Happy for No Reason.
Having read lots of self-help books before there wasn't an awful lot that was new to me here, but it was an excellent synthesis of lots of other research and the conclusions made sense. Maybe it would make more sense to buy this book and spend more time implementing the ideas, instead of doing what I did and buying multiple different books but not really implementing the ideas within!
I liked a lot about, especially the first half of the book. Most things I read go right along with the gospel, and are things we are all working at becoming better at. The thing that stand out to me is on Page 84 about how are thoughts are not always true....and the following sections on keeping in check our negative thoughts. Page 107 "Which wolf wins....the one you feed".
I will try to Breath deeply more! And remember it's ok to stop being SO busy and remember on Page 189 by Mother Teresa, "God

Absolutely great book. You can bdg most of the information included her in a variety of books. For some reason, I'm caught up in reading several of these types of books at the same time. But Marci Shimoff makes sure that you have all of the tools in the same place. As a 12 stepper, I love that one of the final stories is about finding happiness in 12 step recovery in AlAnon. This was (not surprisingly) a very happy book. :-) I found myself smiling just reading it. I also found that most of it made sense (which isn't always the case with this sort of book). However, it falls short of five stars because I'm not sure how much of a lasting effect it's going to have on my life. There was almost too much information to actually absorb it all - nothing extremely complicated, but just seemed like a lot ideas. Marci Shimoff is delightful. I love the concept of the book and the way she writes. She includes a lot of stories and supports everything she says with research.

pretty good advice. i like that she did her research both in and out of the scientific community AND that she made the information easily accessible to people that may not understand all the neuroscience stuff. some of the advice seemed like "no duh. why wouldn't that make me happy?" but then you realize that you aren't really doing those "duh" type things in your life. so it's a good reminder.

as with any self-help book, i feel that it should still be taken with a grain of salt, and lots of skep
