With a disastrous marriage behind him, Wyatt Kent has no interest in getting involved with any woman, let alone his ex-wife's younger sister. But when Calliope Andrews hires him to build an addition onto her day care center, Wyatt can't help but notice she's a desirable woman, as warm and funny as his ex was cold and aloof.

3.25 RATING- I've had this on my Kindle for over two years and am finally reading it!

It was a cute story that could have rated higher for me but I was never quite sold on the heroine pursuing her sisters ex-husband. I would have felt much better about it if her sister was dead : ) but she wasn't. I also thought the heroine was a bit underhanded with how she dealt with a particular situation at the end. Both of these things kept me from rating this higher.

Still, it was well written and an easy

I had a bit of an issue with the settings. The hero was once married to the heroine's sister and the divorce was a bitter one. And now the heroine expected him to get over it and make peace with his ex-wife so that they can all live happily ever after.

Too much for me to stomach in. In-laws are always a no no.

Loved the dynamic of these two! Very sweet story!

This one did not work as well as the previous, as the format seemed a constraint to the story and the ending felt awfully rushed. First thing first, I'm not a huge fan of stories when someone ends up with his former spouse's sibling, sister of the divorced wife in this case.
I did not like not really knowing what had been so awful in the divorce that 3 years later Wyatt still could not date, was obnoxiously grumpy every day all day long. I was expecting a big announcement on this topic but it nev

I really enjoyed this Christmas novella. The heroine was simply fantastic and though the hero came across more like a cantankerous old fart than a torture hero, I did warm up to him by the end. This was an angsty but good read.

Note: This book is part of the Christmas anthology Holiday Kisses: A Holiday Romance Collection

The hero was once married to the heroine's sister and the divorce was less than amiable. In-laws falling in love is too creepy for me, especially when the ex is still alive.

Note: This story is also available in Holiday Kisses: A Holiday Romance Collection anthology.

Unrequited love that is finally returned.

Calliope has had a crush on Wyatt ever since her sister brought him home to meet their parents, but he has always been off limits. Now the two are long divorced and Calliope is determined to help Wyatt get over his bitterness over their difficult divorce.

There are obstacles and taboo of a relationship between them, but her persistence and the love they come to feel for one another help overcome them and bright their long awaited happily ever after.

This was a great stand-alone read despite it being part of a series. I received it as a free read and it was really my introduction to an author I've heard a lot of great things about but never had the opportunity to read.

I love the Kent brothers, they definitely deserve to have a full length story about each one and not just a shorten version.

We met Wyatt Kent through Ethan in All She Wants for Christmas. We learned he got burned in his marriage and now stays away from the female race. Well, he’s finally meets the woman who’s going to change that and she was once his wife’s little sister.

When Wyatt arrives at Small Hands Day Care Center, ran by Calliope Andrews, his ex-wife’s sister, all he wants to do is turn

My Review:
Rating: B
Overall, this was a fun little read. I had some personal issues with Wyatt just because I felt like he hung onto his bitterness over his failed marriage for entirely too long...(PS. Calliope agreed with me.) I absolutely adored Calliope's character and how ballsy she is! She is awesome!! Here is just the perfect taste of what I am talking about:
"I can't believe a big tough guy like you is afraid of a little think like me, Wyatt." Then she stepped back, her gaze traveling halfw

Classic Harlequin-esque romance -- I actually enjoyed how forthright and confident Calliope was. I had her pegged in a certain character stereotype, and she surprised me at every turn. Wyatt had his good moments, though I'm not a huge fan of the taciturn and grumpy guy in general. My major issue with the book was the ending -- it felt HUGELY rushed and just read very fast for me (particularly the Cassandra/Wyatt resolution). And then it was just bam bam bam, ending. So it lost me there. Ah well.

Freebie time!

This was a pleasant story about a man meeting his ex-wife's younger sister for the first time since she grew up. The eight-year age difference did not seem to matter. I found it hard to believe that they had not gotten to know each other much when they were in-laws, but the author skims over that with no reference as to why.

These characters in this 88-page novella (presently a freebie at the publisher's website) have a business relationship that grows with their attraction into a ho

Listened to on audio. Narrated by Oliver Wyman.

2 stars for the narrator. His performance was ok but I don't think this narrator should do romance. The love scenes seemed to pass me by because they were delivered in such a nondescipt way. He could have been reading almost anything because there was no passion.

Fortunately I have read this before and absolutely loved it. Other people seem bothered by the hero having been married to the heroine's sister, however, this didn't bother me. They hadn't s

You get a real sense of how miserable Wyatt Kent is in the first book of Jaci Burton’s Kent Brothers series. That made me kind of excited to read A Rare Gift to see if there was a woman who could tame and soothe this wild beast. After a failed marriage, Wyatt has no interest in relationships or women in general, most especially Calliope Andrews, his ex-wife’s younger sister. Calliope has been attracted to Wyatt since her sister brought him home and she wants to prove to him she’s nothing like Ca ...more

I love Christmas and romance and this is packed with both, and can I just say that this curled my tows beyond belief! So loved the premise and the tenacity and strength Calliope possessed and the way Wyatt comes to realize what he wants, needs and he has to do to obtain the future he longs for.

Wonderful feel good HEA story that I highly recommend. What a rare gift Ms. Burton has bestowed on her readers.

A great read.
Really enjoy reading about this family, their friends, and town.
Wyatt had been burned by a failed marriage to none other than Calliope's older sister 3 years before and has not dated since. You can feel Wyatt's attraction to Calliope and his fear of letting go to try again. But Calliope is determined to claim him and show that her love is true. You can sense her frustration and pain as she fails but she is stubborn and keeps chipping away at the wall around his heart.

I think the particular thing that annoyed me into putting this book down was the anti-rental attitude (city-dweller without a fortune, no, I'm not buying a home), but I'd like to think I'd've kept reading if I'd expected other redeeming features.

(My general sense of this author is that she's a little more invested in traditional gender roles and gender essentialism than I prefer. Although this is fairly common in romance, and I'll put up with it in borrowed books, it doesn't always take a lot o

LOVE LOVE LOVE Jaci Burton! Even though it's March - had to read this! I didn't realize there was a Kent Brothers series! This is the story of Wyatt and Callipoe -- Wyatt is has been bitter since his divorce over 3years ago and has to a job for his ex-sisterinlaw Callipoe. Callipoe has always been attracted to Wyatt and knew his marriage to her sister was going to fail --they were both involved for the wrong reasons. After being persistent, finally Wyatt admits his feelings for Callipoe and she ...more

I had originally read the first book in the Kent Brothers series which was absolutely perfect for Christmas - the right balance of Christmas/non-Christmas story line (meaning more Christmas, less trashy romance). This story felt like Christmas was a far off byline. Which, considering I didn't finish reading it until this week, was fine I guess, but I'm happy that when I was looking for a Christmas book I actually read the first book the week of Christmas and not this one. The story was too quick ...more

Wyatt Kent has been hurt after the end of a disastrous marriage. The last thing he wants is to be involved again, but when he is requested to give a bid on adding a room to the local daycare, his interest is peaked by the owner. The owner unfortunately just happens to be his ex-wife’s sister, Calliope. Not ready to give up his anger and hurt over his marriage, he tries to avoid and run off Calliope without much success.

Calliope Andrews has loved Wyatt Kent since she was a teenager even though he

These two, I think I have a soft spot for men that are gruff and angry and turn in to big teddy bears. Wyatt is pissed, he in a funk and its not been light since his divorce. He wanted a family, he wanted kids and dogs and he wanted all of that with Cassandra. So he thought, until they divorced and now he wants nothing to do with women at all. Enter Calliope, Cassie's little sister, he's attracted to her but he doesn't want to be, shes just a kid and his ex- sister-in-law. That makes it all wron ...more

This was a cute, fun story, and felt refreshingly low on melodrama or unnecessary angst. The hero and heroine felt like grown-ups; at one point, one of them feels "betrayed" by the other, and I was worried that it was going to become a bigger issue than it should have been, but that person quickly got over it and admitted to being wrong (again, like an adult).

This might be a little spoilery, but (view spoiler)

* READ IN THE HOLIDAY KISSES ANTHOLOGY *

This story is the reason why I bought this anthology. Yes I know I could've bought just this story, but last year I enjoyed all four novellas in the Christmas anthology that the Kent Brothers # 1 was in sooooo here I am. The Kent brothers are hot general contractors. You gotta love a man that works with his hands *waggle seyebrows*. Much in the same way as his brother in book 1, Wyatt was previously marrie

I enjoy reading Ms. Burton’s stories - she writes spicy contemporary romances with well-developed relationships that build at a good pace. But I couldn’t get past the “ish” factor of the underlying plot of this novella to truly enjoy it

Calliope needs a contractor to build an addition on her day care center. Her former brother-in-law and his family are the only “honest” contractors in town, and Wyatt, the former BIL is the only one available for the job. It doesn’t hurt that he’s hot, which Call

This series just keeps getting better and better. A Rare Gift is the 2nd book in the Kent Brothers series and by far my favorite.

Wyatt Kent has turned surly and bitter since his divorce 2 years before. He’s gone about his life and job in the family construction business. But, people tend to keep their distance when he’s in a mood, which is all the time. Hired to build an addition at the local daycare is his worst nightmare come true. Not only is the daycare owned by his ex-wife’s sister, but he

Is this one of her earlier books? Disappointing. I read this book (novella) in Holiday Kisses. Did she open her beer 2x on page 135? Why make the girls name so similar, Calliope and Cassandra? I really dislike when authors switch POV without switching chapters or leaving blank line.... Other than that kind of a cute story but weak. Won't read this series. Love Play by Play
