Yellow Submarine
by
The Beatles
This enchanting illustrated book captures the same magical spirit found in the film. The Beatles’ journey to save Pepperland from the music-hating Blue Meanies is filled with surrealistic humor, wit, and clever references to The Beatles’ song titles and lyrics. In this iTunes exclusive, clips from the movie have been included throughout and can be viewed either embedded in...more

I read this most recently with my kids. We were all crowded together on the lower bunk bed, heads all touching, looking up at my tiny iPod screen, and that was by far the most enjoyable part of the experience -- that pressure when people who love each other press their heads together.
The book in its iPod form just blows. In the move to high-tech hypertextuality, the kooky, trippy, wacky joy of Yellow Submarine is gone.

It's been long enough since I read this that I don't remember whether I read the movie or saw the book first. (That wasn't quite what I meant to say...but it fits).
I do know that I read (or experienced) the book long before I ever saw any Monty Python sketches. It's an odd sort of hybrid--a very visual experience, but in book form, with some text. I remember being enchanted by it. I particularly liked the Liverpudlian accents. I'd heard the Beatles talk, of course, and could supply the sound of...more

I won't waste your time or mine restating my Beatles bona fides. You can read my other reviews and check my book list for that.
This was a free download that Apple made available from their book store. I had to check it out, and it was about what I expected: a combination of the worst aspects of (1) The Beatles in post-Epstein, contractual obligation mode and (2) a children's book in dopey lesson mode.

This was another free book on the iBooks Store.
It was also a book that I attempted downloading when I got my iPod touch. It never wanted to cooperate, though. Instead, I waited, and I finally decided to give it another chance to download onto my brand new MacBook. It worked!
Yellow Submarine is fully of witty references to Beatles songs, and if you read it on the iBooks store on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, it is interactive. You can click on the many creatures and people in the book and the...more

Beatles-fanit ja heidän jälkikasvunsa
Siniset ilkiöt valtaavat valtaavat musiikkia rakastavan Pippurimaan, mutta onneksi kapteeni Fred pääsee pakoon Keltaisella sukellusveneellään ja kutsuu joukon pitkätukkaisia liverpoolilaisia muusikoita apuun. Ja kuinka sitten käykään?
Vuonna 1968 valmistuneeseen Beatles-animaatioon "Yellow Submarine" (Walker Books, 2004) perustuva kuvakirja viehättänee kaikkia beatlemaanikkoja, mutta mikseipähappoisen psykedeelinen värikäs tarina voisi lapsiinkin upota.

While I enjoyed this picture book version of the Yellow Submarine as a time machine peek at my childhood, I'm not sure how it will play with today's readers.
This interactive eBook features both video and audio clips from the movie it's based on, and allows the reader to interact with the characters. The imagery in the book assists the psychedelic storyline, and the book is full of witty word play ("The first time I saw that nobody," said Ringo proudly, "I knew he was a sombody."). Yellow Submarine inspires to expand our minds and challenges our imaginations in the most fun way possible. And most importantly, it teaches us about forgiveness and that...more
I read this on my iPad, and it is the most fun, interactive book I've read. Sure, I know the story, and saw the movie, but getting to use a touch screen to add to the uniqueness of it all is something that pleasantly surprised me. But then again, it IS the Beatles, and the film was psychedelic enough that it should come as no shock in the age of iPads that the boom turned in to more. I went back and reread it a few times just to feel eight years old again and sit and play with the pictures while...more
Another iPad book. Super interactive--it had a number of little videos embedded in the picture book, which had the effect of introducing a new generation to Sgt. Pepper and the Beatles. It could have benefited from putting a few more bits in there--in the Charlie Brown book there were some games and interactive things that engaged you even further in what you were reading--but on the whole it was a charming adaptation of the well-loved picture book, and acts as a great example for what can be do...more
Like many others, I read through this one as the highly interactive, video and animation rich version was issued as a free book by Itunes. While the story and overall tone are thinly veiled 1960s truism wrapped in either, as one person put it, a Monty Python-esque presentation, or a drug inspired altered reality. It seemed thin on actual lessons for children - all you need is love perhaps and music haters are bad people. This book is more of a cultural artifact than anything and speaks to the po...more
Reason for Reading: I love The Beatles and couldn't resist this homage to the fantastic film and song "Yellow Submarine".
Well, what can I say. If you loved the animated film you'll delight in this picture book. The plot of the book is a very condensed version of the film's plot, keeping the main idea but leaving out many sideplots. It *is* only 40 pages. The book's main glory is in it's illustration taken from/based on that of the film. I think parents/grandparents will be buying this one for th...more

I would give this book three stars, but Beatrice would give it five, so I split the difference. I think I've read it to her a hundred times (at least!)
The illustrations and all are straight from the Beatles movie as is the message "All you need is Love" (which Bea wonders around singing the day after we read it). The Blue Meanies have invaded Pepperland, freezing all the love and music. The Captain travels by yellow submarine to Liverpool where he picks up Ringo, George, John and Paul, who retu...more

I expected this to bring back more nostalgia than it did (I saw the film when I was a kid).
The interaction of the iBook format was cute and it was all very colourful and laced with sound, but all in all it's nothing I'll come back to.
Kids these days might like the combination of text and technology, but if I ever wanted to introduce a kid to the Beatles, I'd choose a different way, I guess.

found this at the local library while looking with my kids for our weekly reading. Read it too my kids then one more time for myself. As a fan of the Song I had to read the book. I have never seen the movie or cartoon but if it has the same little wise craking jokes that Ringo makes, then tell me where to pick it up...5 STARS
Okay, this is a picture book I got for free. It's cute alright, but... I don't know, I wish it was something that wasn't just a retelling of the story.
Can't we have something new? :( I could have just rewatched the movie... I don't know. I probably shouldn't complain about books Itunes gave out for free.

Enhanced book has video clips of the animated film, parts that move about, and is generally brilliant - this has been my go to item whenever I'm stuck unexpectedly in a line - I'll never go postal at the post office again!
