Barbara Freethy picked up her wand and wave a magical story with this one. I would never doubt again she is a wonderful writer, after the disastrous, in my opinion: Some Kind of Wonderful.

I was quite surprised that the story does not feel long at all. Imagined when I was reading on my e-reader, and suddenly I was like - What? I am at the 'Epilogue' section already?

First we meet Liz Kelly. She's a nurse freshly off her shift, celebrating her thirtieth birthday alone on the hospital rooftop with a cupcake. Recently dumped by her boyfriend, she has only one wish – to find that special man to fall in love with and be loved back. Before she can make her wish, she is startled out of her reverie by a handsome stranger.

Next is Carole. She's a mother and the (trophy) wife of a politician. Turning forty brings with it the fear that her husband may soon be on the lookout for a younger upgrade. Looking at the guests at her party also makes it glaringly obvious that it's more like a political campaign to hob nob rather than celebrate her. Her children didn't even stick around to enjoy the party, but she can't blame them. She has devoted her whole life to her husband's career and neglected them. When she catches her husband in a compromising situation with a younger woman, she runs away to the one place she ran away from and vowed never to return – back to the shabby neighborhood where she grew up and where her estranged mother still lives.

Lastly we have Angela. She comes from a large family who in turn all have families of their own. Except her. Her and her husband have spent many years and a lot of money trying to get pregnant. Failure is not an option. When her husband receives his annual bonus, she's certain he'll agree to another round of IVF. Instead he surprises her with tickets for a romantic cruise. She's devastated by his unwillingness to give her her dream. She escapes from her party with only one question burning on her mind – is a life consisting of just her and her husband enough for her, and where does that leave them?

Each woman's tale of self discovery cycles through from beginning, middle to the end. They even catch a glimpse or exchange a word or two with one another at different stages of the story but that's about the extent of their awareness of one another. Each story brought a few tears, but none moreso than Liz and John's. He helped her "live a little" while remaining oddly cryptic about himself. All my guesses turned out to be way off base. Their night of hanging out and experiencing new things leads to a night of passion. The morning after, John has disappeared leaving Liz a heartfelt note and a confession. But she won't let her wish slip away so easily.

Carole's journey was predictable, but her struggle to make sense of her life felt believable. I wasn't sure what decision she'd make in the end, but I knew what I was hoping for. Out of all three ladies, I think Angela had the most touching story. I'm glad the author took this arc in a positive direction and made Angela's husband a man of worth, and the proverbial rock to lean on. His disappointment with Angela was honest and not unfounded. Of course both partners have to be on the same page and not dole out ultimatums if they expect their marriage to work.

The epilogue was perhaps a little predictable, but this whole book felt like a tale of hope and faith, that I wasn't surprised at all. While the ladies never officially meet, we get a glimpse into their lives one year later. They're all celebrating their birthday and a year of changes, coincidentally all in the same restaurant. A very uplifting story well told.(less)

Like Angie, Carole deals with the news by leaving her party. But whereas Angie wanted to escape her family, Carole runs to hers: she sees her mother for the first time in two years.

Each woman has her wish, and each is desperate for it to come true. As Liz explains to John, "I want what everyone else has. Excitement, passion, all that crazy mad-about-you stuff. I want to fall in love." They each fight for their wish to come true, and that's why you will enjoy this brisk read. Liz, Angie and Carole are well sketched characters, and Barbara Freethy lets us see their good and bad points.

A Secret Wish is a nice, simple story that will take you an hour or two to read. There are no sex scenes, although at least two of the women engage in some romance. It's a nice little novella.(less)

I cried when I read this book. The first story touched my heart the most. I could really feel for Liz; the one who have everything, and yet nothing at all. I could feel her loneliness, and her struggles to reach out for someone whom she could share her life with.

Each woman spends the night of their birthday on a journey of self-discovery and although they may not end up with what they thought they needed, they end up with something maybe even better.

This was the first novel I’ve read by Barbara Freethy and although it is not what I expected, I did enjoy it. It’s a short book, more like a novella and it’s a light, quick read.

The characters are somewhat predictable and their journeys aren’t surprising. I loved Liz and John and would have liked more of their story (perhaps a full novel). The other two started out un-interesting for me but on reflection I think it was because I was wrapped up in Liz’s story. I did grow to like Carole and I was happy with the path her choices led her. Angie just never connected with me.

Freethy’s writing style is light and she tells a good story but I would have liked to see more development in the relationship’s each woman formed on her birthday. Especially Liz and John, they have the potential to be really great characters.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a review. Overall, it was an ok read but not one I would read again.

I enjoyed this book. This book follows three completely different storylines but all connect in that each one of the main characters have the same birthday. 30th birthday, 35th birthday, and a 40th birthday for each storyline. The characters do come in contact with each other but it is so small that it didn't really matter besides having a nice moral of the story at the end. To tell you the truth when I ran accross this book... I never looked at the title or read what it was about!

This is a heartfelt story. It is about three women sharing the same birthday, and what they wished for. Another similarity was that they all had something that held them back, which leads us to why they made their wishes in the first place.

Oh, this was such a sweet and uplifting book. I got it as a free kindle book and read it today. It felt like I was reading a Hallmark movie if you know what I mean.

Each woman on a different journey have their own troubles. Each woman represented a different stage in a woman's life, longing for something important and meaningful. I connected with each woman, surprisingly. I thought I would only connect to a couple, but the way Freethy wrote their voices, you couldn't help but do so.

Freethy knows how connect to her writers, choosing details that will grab and hold on to their hearts. While I felt that some of the stories were predictable, they were still heartfelt and honest. My emotions still reacted and I still shed tears. A Secret Wish had a lot of hope and faith, making this a perfect weekend read.

When I was still into contemporary romance years ago, Barbara Freethy was one of my favorite authors. She had a way to write such compelling stories. Then Ms. Freethy seemed to move to romantic suspense genre and at the same time, I lost interest in the contemporary romance genre.

Now, I'm in the mood for contemporary romance again and this short novel is just perfect. It reminds me why I love Ms. Freethy's stories. It has heart as the core. Each story is thoughtful and heartwarming.

Then Ms. Freethy seemed to move to romantic suspense genre and at the same time, I lost interest in the contemporary romance genre.

Now, I'm in the mood for contemporary romance again and this short novel is just perfect. It reminds me why I love Ms. Freethy's stories. It has heart as the core. Each story is thoughtful and heartwarming.

The timeline in this story is only 24-hours. Three women are celebrating their birthday and each discovers that the night will change their life forever.

Liz's story, who is turning 30 and without a relationship, is the one I love the most. I love how John, the stranger, brings out the 'reckless' part of Liz. Liz used to live a 'planned' life. She has boyfriend because everybody else has one, and she doesn't want to be lonely. It moves me because I can definitely feel what Liz feels. The part where Liz finds out John's secret in his letter brings me to tears.

Angela's story is about learning that sometimes what you want is not exactly what you need. Angela is so blinded with her determination to be a mother, to have a baby, that it puts strain in her marriage. I love the resolution of her story. I love how Angela and her husband, Colin, are fighting for their marriage despite the baby problem. I love their talks, it's just SO GOOD, so realistic.

While Carole's story is the least favorite. Carole wants to get out from her childhood situation. She wants to be rich, to have it all, only to realize years later that in doing so, she loses herself. Her husband is probably having an affair with a younger woman, and she is not close to any of her children. I love Carole's conversation with her mother, as well as the man who used to be her first love. But at the same time, I find this plot to be a bit cliché ...

This is a story that celebrates love and life, and gives readers hope that sometimes wishes do come true ...(less)

They say everyone has a book in them. I'm certainly glad Barbara decided to write this one. I connected with a the great stories of three different women whose fate brushed up against each other, but never really touched. I don't normally read a book that is not descriptive when it comes to following the protagonists into the bedroom, but I found this story very refreshing anyways. I like the way she writes, and her ability to not stall in the plot line. All her heroines were interesting.

I loved how she intertwined the characters life and they all happened to have the same birthday. And everything works out in the end and find a happy ending for each girl. She told a really good story amongst every character and kept you wanting more, I highly recommend this book to everyone. One thing I wish is that she jumped a little father ahead and not just 1yr. It goes to show no matter how old you are, you are never to old to make a birthday wish and having it come true.

A Secret Wish by Barbara Freethy is a refreshing read. Ms. Freethy leads us into the insight of not just one mind, not two, but three different pairs. She did a tremendous job at capturing my attention, holding it, and then releasing it on down to the last minute. I truly enjoyed reading this novel and look forward to more she has to provide.

Four out of five stars.

This was a really sweet short book.

Three women's lives collide on their shared birthdays. They are all looking to change an aspect of their life and they all spend the evening of their birthday in unexpected ways.Their birthday wishes reflect the changes they want to make.

It looks as though it is the first in a series and I would definitely catch the others when I want a nice heartstrings read.

Loved this book. Three women at different points in their lives turn 30, 35 and 40 respectively. Three different women, three different stories but yet the characters in each story interact be it in a small way. I thought each story was great but found myself more attached to Liz and John. What a great story especially with the twist. The epilogue was good but I found myself wanting more... A true sign of a good book!!!

I would say this book was a solid 3.75 book. I believe it is only available in eBook form. Three women, three birthdays and one unforgettable night that will change their lives forever. This was a quick, easy read that was very enjoyable. The characters were likable and drew me in to want to learn more. The story takes place over a 24 hour period and was interesting to see how their lives intertwind.

I enjoyed reading "A Secret Wish" this weekend. It's a lighthearted short novel of three women who share the same birthday and how their lives come together through happenstance. This is the first time I've read Barbara Freethy and I am now looking forward to reading her other books. I've already added several of her books to my Kindle. It's exciting to discover a new favorite author.

This was three stories in one. The common thread starts with three women all having the same birthday and turning 30, 35 and 40. They all have a problem and a need to refocus their lives. The story is a very quick read. It was enjoyable, however not very deep. I found the characters to not be very well developed. The ending was predictable and very abrupt.

Another sweet treat from Barbara Freethy. Three women share the same birthday with different problems staring them down. In one night, can they find a way to solve their issues and be happier for the experience? Of course they can. But not before a lot of self analysis and courage. My one complaint would be the ending is too abrupt.

The bones of this book were really good but I felt that it was too rushed, I really wanted to know MUCH more about these ladies and the epilogue didn't really fulfill my need to know more. I really wish there would be a more flushed out and extended version someday because I really rather liked what I read!
