It pays to make friends with your local librarian. They might lend you silly books! After chatting with our school librarian about my current reading project of graphic novels, she lent me one of her favorites: Bird and Squirrel on the Run by James Burks. It’s hilarious and cute.

Bird and Squirrel on the Run features three main characters, of which I am most unlike Bird. When Bird first shows up on the pages, he’s flying around singing about what a wonderful day it is and greeting everyone he mee...more

In this colorful graphic novel, two unlikely friends, a nervous squirrel and a carefree bird, join together to escape the menacing cat that wants to eat them. When Squirrel’s winter nut supply is destroyed in his attempts to save Bird from the evil cat’s claws, Bird and Squirrel decide to escape the upcoming cruel weather by embarking on a road trip south. Along the way, Bird annoys Squirrel with his laissez-faire attitude and the theme song he created for the duo.

Despite their differences, Bir...more

Fun-loving Bird and paranoid Squirrel don't get along at first. Then Bird injures his wing and accidentally destroys Squirrel's hoard of nuts. When faced with the possibility of starving to death or migrating south with Bird, Squirrel chooses the road trip. When they get to know each other a little better...they really get on each others' nerves. The road trip begins to sound like an awful idea. If Squirrel hadn't left at least he'd be starving to death at home. Now they're on the road and they...more

Holy cow, Bird & Squirrel are my husband and me. He's Bird. Good golly, he's Bird. Leaving me to be Squirrel. Sadly.

Whoever is in charge of taking kids' books and turning them into cartoons: ordinarily, I would not be a fan of your work. However, this book is destined to be a cartoon. It really, really needs to be a cartoon. So if this is your job, I will give you a pass just this one time, because, seriously--this needs to be a cartoon.

Squirrel is busybusybusy. Winter is coming and he hasn...more

I read an advance copy of this book, so only the first few pages were in color. I might up my review to 4 stars upon seeing the full-color version.

For the kid who loves cartoons, slapstick humor, and annoyingly funny characters (pretty much anyone in elementary school) this is the book for you. Sensible, overly-cautious Squirrel is preparing for winter, while the annoyingly cheerful bird is delaying his migration south in favor of fun. When a run in with a cat causes Squirrel to loose his entir...more

Loved this comic about two mis-matched friends heading south for the winter (after Bird accidently destroys Squirrel's carefully hoarded collection of nuts). Complicating the picture--Cat, who just really, really wants to eat them both! Excellent adventure and friendship story. James Burks is also the author of the wonderful comic “Gabby & Gator.”

What a great story. This was a very quick read filled with fun, laughter and adventure. This book really made me appreciate graphic novels. I was never a graphic novel reader before but this book makes me want to read more. I felt that this tale of friendship was fresh and new. I loved the pictures and the sequence style of the genre. Awesome!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel for the elementary set (probably geared to grades 2-4). Bird is optimistic and adventurous. Squirrel is pessimistic and nervous. One day Bird meets Squirrel as Squirrel is finishing up gathering nuts for the winter. Cat suddenly goes after Bird. Squirrel decides to take out one of his precious acorns to throw at Cat and help out Bird. Bird gets away, but all of Squirrel's stash gets dislodged and floats down the river. Squirrel is worried about starving, so Bi...more

Excellent!

It's a visually appealing book full of great laughs. I gave this as a Christmas gift to my 7yr old student and we absolutely loved reading it together.

It's appropriate with characters you really take to and can find relatable.

I'm really hoping the author comes out with a whole series!

So great! This graphic novel for 2nd-4th graders was hilarious (in an I Love Spongebob/Fairly Oddparents/Other Nickelodeon shows kind of way) and full of adventure, with a little sweet story about friendship thrown on top. Exactly the kind of thing that kids love. Can't wait to give this one out.

A totally serviceable story about unlikely friends, the carefree bird and the worrywart squirrel, trying to escape the clutches of an evil cat who wants to eat them. It's a nice, bright graphic novel that will be an easy sell to most fans of the genre.
Alison

Fast-paced and fun. The plot here is one-note - just one close scrape after another as the odd couple tries to stay clear of a cat's clutches - but it's a fun romp with lively illustrations that'll definitely appeal to young comics readers.

A story of two friends who are very different (carefree v. cautious, flighty v. grounded -- literally) but have a common enemy (the cat) and goal (go south before winter sets in). For kids who like slapstick humor and cartoon-like artwork.
Karen
This will be a fun graphic novel series for kids to follow. Bird is a happy go lucky character, and Squirrel worries about everything. They make a great pair as they have a cat that chases them throughout the book. Fun!

A cute book with awesome pictures. Squirrel likes to be orderly and prepared for everything. But bird is a free spirit and just want to have fun. Cat is trying to get them both. Liked it a lot. My 6 year old had so much fun reading this book.
Jason
Cute characters but a wholly unoriginal plot. I got tired of watching the cat chase them through the whole book, a real one-note kind of antagonist. I rate it 2 1/2 stars if I could, but didn't dislike it enough to rate it two stars.
Peacegal
This comic expertly captures the pacing and humor of a typical Nickelodeon cartoon. Grade school aged kids will love it for this reason, and older comics fans can take note of the way in which the artist so easily translates action.
Margie
Get ready to laugh as James Burks combines snappy dialogue with colorful visuals filled with non-stop action and hilarity as two unlikely friends journey South relentlessly pursued by a hungry adversary.

I couldn't put it down and was laughing out loud during the book fair to the point that people were staring at me. This book tickled my funny bone and I think will be a hit in the library. I want more Bird & Squirrel adventures.
Anne
A "flighty" bird (pun intended!) and a hard-working squirrel team up in order to escape a hungry and persistent cat in this colorful graphic novel.
Grades 3-6, but I'll put it in my middle school as they will enjoy it, too.
Tasha
Bird and Squirrel don’t exactly get along. Bird just wants to have a good time and never worries about a thing. Squirrel is obsessive about gathering nuts for the winter and worries constantly. But when Squirrel’s hoard of nuts is destroyed, the two of them realize they need one another to head south for the winter. Unfortunately, the cat has a different idea and that is having both Squirrel and Bird for lunch! This zany graphic novel is filled with twists and turns that will have even the most...more

I think that bird and squirrel is a good and funny comic book.Well I liked bird and squirrel because to me it was like every where bird and squirrel went is where the cat would end up but then get hurt.I also like the book because it's like squirrel cares about every thing and bird doesn't really doesn't care.So if you don't like funny comics then put this book down but if you do please read it thank you!
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
I loved Gaby and Gator and now I love Bird & Squirrel. The odd couple is resurrected in this graphic novel about an industrious squirrel and an irresponsible Bird. Kids will love it.
Polly
Very cute and funny--although what is it about squirrels that makes people think of them as paranoid animals, I don't know. Scaredy Squirrel and now this!
Mary Lee
This squirrel must be Scaredy's cousin. Great book to use to talk about character traits and characters who change.

A great first graphic novel. Bird and Squirrel are a little like Piggy & Elephant, but not as funny. Cat makes an excellent villain.
Cindy
Loved this dynamic duo! Hopefully James Burks continues their adventures - this will be a winner with my students!
Tessa
If you have an elementary age kid who loves watching cartoons, this fits squarely in their sweet spot.
Louise Bendall
Cute comic! Bird & Squirrel are best friends, and that cat is one pesky feline.
Nora
Entertaining graphic novel about friendship, a road trip and a mean cat.
