I finished Lying Season in the wee hours of the morning (sleep? I felt like I had that rare upper hand again. It was a sick, sad thing to want but couldn't help but grab at it. With Dex, you never knew how long it would be until the rug was pulled out from under you again.

It was all sh*ts and giggles... then this book happened. If I'm going to draw up an analogy to what reading this book felt like, I'm going to have to pick the "getting papercuts all over the body then getting pushed in a vat of alcohol after" scenario.

There's something very raw and poignant about the characters of Dex and Perry individually that moves something in me, that makes them very real. Both these characters are so complex and so unpredictable that you can't help but feel awe and horror at once when all of their jagged edges and imperfect pieces come together and fall apart in endless cycles that never seems to lose any of its intensity.

The past 3 books have placed them in situations where Dex and Perry have been the potential prey to a variety of predators: semi-isolated and almost controlled environment of their frenzied paranormal misadventures. Lying Season is where they become each other's prey and predator and vice versa in several turns of lies.

I had certain expectations when I read in the blurb that Perry was going to stay with Dex and Jenn for a couple of days in Seattle. A couple were met but the majority, a lot of times, just stressed a hole in my gut and left me teary-eyed... not of overwhelming emotion (though I did have that but not to the point of tears) but because of reading in long stretches. If you've gone this far in the series, there is no way you can finish this in more than a day.

I am still in total disbelief at how Perry and Dex could have done the things they have done to each other. In this case, Perry more than Dex, because much as I love this heroine, what she did here was just a big tub of NO. But while Perry took The Iron Throne of Douchiness in this one, Dex isn't far behind. Half the time, I couldn't tell if he's aware of the games he's playing around Perry or if he is the lost boy Rebecca sees him as, a floating leaf waiting for a place to crash in.

I am cheering on them both but the way they go about NOT having a relationship with each other with their secrets and the burdens they carry is like a lengthy documentary on how not to be a couple.

The exploration of the asylum continues to show the improvement in the creep factor of the episodes and the Ghost of the Week will probably have a return guesting in the future books. There's a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional scenes in a contemporary romance in this one that neither alienated nor seem derivative to me... it was very refreshing, but very strange to find in this series. It has a different tone and feel compared to the past books and you get the sense that you're really entering the freeway with that last scene, going to a direction different from what you've come to know.

And yet at the last turn of the page, despite swimming in that vat of alcohol... you can't seem to help it but dive back in for more.(less)

I know this won't be a popular opinion (there are only 14X 3 star ratings and even LESS for 2- and 1- stars), but I'll just cut to the chase: this book was a disappointment to me. The thing that has drawn me most to this series (Dex and Perry, their great characters and their complicated relationship) was what made this book a chore to get through at times. It's a shame, again, because I really liked Halle's previous three entries, but I am rating/reviewing this book, not the others.

The biggest problem I had with this entry was the characters and how much time (probably almost 75% of the novel) was spent on them and their dysfunction. But before I get into the problems, let me give a few compliments.

I like that the characters are imperfect. I like that Perry can be insecure and blunt - characteristics that some authors are afraid to give to girls because they wouldn't be "pure and wholesome". I also was glad to see how she grew a backbone in this book and stopped putting up with Dex's sh!t. I like that Dex is actually a "bad boy" beyond the tattoos, the earrings, and the hair. I like the complicated relationship between Jenn and Dex and their selfish reasons for being together.

But did we have to go from everyone calling Perry "fat" to everyone wanting to kiss her amazing @$$, where she can do no wrong? The only characters that really don't like her are the evul ones (which, I hate to say it, smarts of a Mary Sue). Does Perry have to go around and insult any woman who likes popular music, is thin, and basically not "authentic" and "real" like Perry?

Why does Dex have to lead on two women - his girlfriend and Perry? Why can't a 30-something year old man use his mouth to TELL people how he feels and avoid half the conflict? (Yeah, he has a better excuse than most, but after awhile, I just wanted to strangle him and yell, "JUST TELL HER ALREADY!!")

Why does Jenn have to be an evul, cheating b!tch? Sure, I know some of this is just Perry's selfish, hateful bias coming out (because hating on a woman over a man is so worth it), but if it were JUST Perry, then there wouldn't be half-dozen other people who hate Jenn's guts and affirm Perry's opinion. Why couldn't Jenn have had more nuance? And Jenn was the ONLY one writing the hateful comments to Perry? A tour around YouTube shows that the hateful comments don't just come from ONE Anonymous person. (Yes, Shownet isn't YouTube, but it still unlikely that she would be the ONLY Anonymous calling Perry "fat".)

And THAT is what drug down this book for me. THAT is what made this book grate against me, kept me from reading it for days on end, and made me want to smack all three main characters. There was SO MUCH relationship drama, so much ring-around-the-rosie, so much of characters walking around refusing to say what is on their mind, so much hatred of Jenn for stupid things like her "slutty" clothes or the fact that she was a light-weight drinker (yes, Perry is that petty!) or as "authentic and original" as Perry was (which came across as pretentious and snobby) that I had trouble reading more than a few pages at a time. I wouldn't probably have had as much of a problem is Perry restricted her insults towards Jenn about real character faults, such as Jenn's shallowness, unfaithfulness, or rudeness, but instead, it's more like, "Oh, she's with the man *I* want to date - I hate her because she's in my way of having sex with the man I think is hot! And she's totally not as awesome or worthy of his attention as I am"

And it's a shame, because this book had a LOT going for it. This is probably the strongest horror story in the series. We get a lot of positive female characters - and some non-straight characters. And it is high time we addressed the Perry-Dex-Jenn dynamic. And if we had spent MORE time on the horror and less on Perry's dress-up session without bra and undies or Perry insulting Jenn at every turn, it would be a FANTASTIC book.

One more thing: the writing seriously needed another editing session. I found numerous grammatical and spelling errors and missing words. "Half drank" instead of "Half drunk". A missing "not" in a sentence that completely changed the meaning. I could maybe make an allowance if I were reading the ebook, but I bought the paperback. Also, the typeface made reading the book a challenge - words were smashed together (smashedtogether) or split funny (spli tfun ny) so that reading was a challenge.

I don't hate relationship drama in an urban fantasy series. It makes it more interesting than just another monster of the week and can push characters to new depths. But when the relationship dominates the fantasy elements and when it resorts to cliched characters and the worship of others, it starts to get hard to enjoy the novel. I got so mad at this book, there were a couple of times while reading this I considered not reading further into the series; however, the ending redeemed the series in my mind and bumped this to a 3 star rating. That said, I am taking a break from the series to calm myself down from the rage I felt while reading this. Hopefully when I return, I will be refreshed and ready to see what happens next to Dex and Perry.(less)

I wasn't sure I was totally onboard with the Experiment in Terror books after book #1. I liked it a lot, loved the characters and the dialog but I just wasn't feeling the paranormal aspect. But after reading how much my favorite book blogger loved this series I kept going. Am I ever glad I did!

Okay, this was the best one so far for me. There are some serious laugh out loud moments. Also some sexual tension you could cut with a knife. What I especially loved about Lying Season was the peak you get into Dex’s past. Not much, but up until now you don’t know much of anything.

The plot thickens and shit gets real.

My heart broke for Perry. And as frustrated and as pissed off as I am at Dex, I can't help but feel for him as well.

These two people are so broken and so lost and throughout this book we fall witness to all of this as it unfolds. This book is full of longing and yearning, full of hope and desperation. But most important of all, this book is filled to the rim with fear.

OMG! ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THIS?!

So, normally I try and put something together that might make some sense, but I just can't this time…. This one was FUCKING AMAZING!!! It hurt to read….it was TERRIFYING, but more than that…it was HEARTBREAKING. So now, I'm on my way to buy every nightlight and light bulb at the nearest hardware store. Then, I'm going to find out WHAT THE HELL HAPPENS NEXT??? Here are my thoughts in gif form…..

OH MY GOD BESTBOOKEVERSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Ok, slight over reaction... but by the time i finished this book i was sat strait up and glued to the kindle, screaching blue murder!

My first 5 star rating in a while and by far the best Experiment in Terror book i've read to date. So much infact i think i will be putting book 5 to the top of my queue!

This book i think was 'less of the terror' & more of the relationship development between dear ol Dex and Kiddo Perry.

What I just read? Really, WTF I just read? I’m beyond words right now and I will do my best to write this review. Although this book is spooky as the previous of the series, it also is about something far more terrifying. Feelings. Emotions. Desires. In this story we learn more about Perry and Dex and their dark past. And then we can understand how much this past made them what they are now. So similar and so different at the same time.

Although this book is spooky as the previous of the series, it also is about something far more terrifying. Feelings. Emotions. Desires. In this story we learn more about Perry and Dex and their dark past. And then we can understand how much this past made them what they are now. So similar and so different at the same time.

Perry’s personal hell is in front of her. She has to go to Seattle so she can work with Dex for their new episode and she has to stay with him and his girlfriend, Jenn. This isn’t only awkward for her but painful also. And Dex doesn’t make things easier with his behavior. Soon, Perry learns a lot of secrets. About Dex’s past, Jenn’s nastiness and that she can’t really trust with her feelings anyone.

In this story we can see another side of both main characters. Perry becomes more confident and more brave as the story continues. She is deeply in love with Dex and it’s obvious that she wants to help him be himself. She’s doing her best here and the result? At the end of the story she is even more hurt. But this is the only problem. It’s pretty obvious that there are so many things that she has to learn about herself and she feels alone. All her life she’s feeling alone and that was her chance to finally be with her other half until everything went wrong.

Dex. I hate him so much right now. I want to punch him and I want to hurt him so bad. He is a bastard and his behavior was as bad as it gets. I get that his dark past made him what he is and I believe that this whole situation takes its toll on him but I really can give him an excuse. He always was a mystery but this time he did everything wrong and he put Perry not only in an uncomfortable position but he broke her heart in the worst way. I am so mad with him right now!

Another amazing book with many hints that we have to see a lot of things happening in the near future. As always, the story is very well-written and with the most interesting characters. Of course, I recommend to start this series immediately!
