Meet Stella Batts. She is eight years old and she loves to write. She loves to write lists; like her favorite things and kids in her class. And she's writing her autobiography ('That means it's all about me'). Stella favorite color is yellow and she LOVES fudge. As a matter of fact, there is a special fudge counter at her family's candy store because fudge is one of her fa...more

Stella Batts is a pretty normal third grader. Her parents own a candy show, she wants to be a writer when she grows up, and she doesn't like her name very much. After she falls in some dog mess while on a class hike, she is horrified to be called Smella. She and her friends decide to change their names, choosing candy names inspired by Stella's family's store. Their teacher refuses to play along, the girls can't keep their new names straight, and all the other kids decide to change their names t...more

California third grader Stella Batts no longer likes her name after her classmate Joshua starts calling her an unflattering rhyming name when she fell into some fecal material while outside one day. Instead of Stella, she decides she wants to be named after a candy since the family owns a confectionary store with yummy treats named for her and her sister Penny. Her friends all love the idea, and they decide to adopt candy names for themselves as well. Lucy becomes Truffle, Talisa becomes Kit Kat...more

I, like many others, have names that I especially like, Katherine and Elizabeth at the top of the list. Stella Batts, after being teased as 'Smella Stella,' decides she too needs a new name. Her friends agree with her and they all pick new names. The problem is that their teacher won't call them by their chosen names. At home however, Stella's little sister quickly claims Stella's 'old' name as her own which results in some unique challenges.

With a cute cover, an interesting plot, and entertain...more

I liked the way Courtney Sheinmel allowed her main character to talk directly to readers, and the plot will definitely engage young readers. I was a little confused by the aspects of the story where Stella wants to write a book inside the story. I worry that this could trip up some readers, making it harder for them to follow along. I'll be interested to find out how some of my students take to Miss Stella Batts. I certainly want to visit her family's candy store. I had visions of Dylan's Candy...more

A new middle grade reader series published by Sleeping Bear Press. (Don't know anything about the author, so I will do some investigating!) I actually would give it 3.5-3.8 rating, so I rounded up. I liked it. I liked the character--Stella. I like that she wants to be a writer. I like how she introduces the reader to writing concepts and terminology. I think the plot was pretty good. I need to read the next one to get a little more feel for this series. More to follow!

Stella Bates is a third grader who wants to be a writer, she has one sister Penny, and her parents own a confectionary store.
In this first book, Stella decides she is going to change her name after she tripped during a school field trip, landed in dog poop, and was called Smella by classmate Joshua.

RECOMMENDED
A GOOD EARLY CHAPTER BOOK

Lesa Zuke
Good early chapter book. Cute, contemporary with humor. Written in first person, but not a diary. Author introduces vocabulary as if the main character is explaining things to you.

I thought this book would be GREAT for my classroom! My girls love Junie B. Jones books and I thought this could be a new type of book the girls in my class would really enjoy!

stella has a party and she wants to change her name. josh calls smella because she fell into a pile of poo. she changes her name to caramel.
Alice
Cute book about an eight-year-old wanting to change her name because a meanie in her class called her "Smella" after an incident on a nature hike.
Jennifer
Cute reader about a third grade girl who gets made fun of for her name. Changing it sounds like a good plan until her sister decides she wants to be named Stella

My daughters review: I really liked the story. She wanted to change her name and so did I.
