Meg Lytton has always known of her dark and powerful gift. Raised a student of the old magick by her Aunt Jane, casting the circle to see visions of the future and concocting spells from herbs and bones has always been as natural to Meg as breathing. But there has never been a more dangerous time to practise the craft, for it is 1554, and the sentence for any woman branded...more

Witchstruck kinda skates by on the strength of its premise: what if Queen Elizabeth I, while still princess and imprisoned by her sister Queen Mary, had a witch for a maid? If that sounds fascinating, this book doesn't disappoint; even though it's alternate history, there's plenty of real stuff to back things up. But it does require just accepting certain things for the plot to work, and while I had no problems doing it, I'll admit this is probably not a book for everyone.

Anyway, Meg, the witch...more

Full disclosure: I am GoodReads/Twitter friends with Victoria and she sent me this novel in exchange for a review. However much I like her (and that is very much!), this did not affect my impression of the novel nor my review for it.

Witchstruck is the addicting and fast-paced tale of Meg Lytton, a burgeoning witch of substantial ability during one of the worst times and places to be such a one -- 1554 England, under the super Catholic reign of Quee...more

I really enjoyed this book. The pace and tone were perfect although I would have liked more clear visual descriptions of the more important characters in the book. I applaud V.L's descriptions of the landscape though and I could practically see the forests, fields and castle when I closed my eyes. Beautiful.

The plot was intriguing and was one of those books I could not put down until the last page was turned.

The reason why I only gave it 3 out of 5 was because I felt that there were a lot of une...more

I must admit the historian in me cringed a little bit when I first heard about this book. Paranormal romance set in Tudor times? Quite honestly I wasn't sure when I agreed to read it. That feeling stuck with me when I started reading it and I actually disliked the fact that Meg, the main character, was interacting with the future Queen Elizabeth I. I could have got onboard with the story exactly as it was despite my reservations but I felt that element to the book was taking it a bit too far. I...more

Oooh, I love it. Really really love it! Is this really the only book? I do wish that there will be a sequel to this awesome book!!!

When I picked up Witchstruck by Victoria Lamb denying that there was going to be a witchy theme would have been like denying that the sun doesn't rise in the east. So needless to say, magic was to be expected. What I hadn't were the cauldrons, animal entrails and good old fashioned eye of newt.

Plunging into the magical swirls of this book I found magic, political ploys, betrayal and love at every stir of a wooden spoon. This was an explosive combination made all the more leathal given the time s...more

To start off I am just going to be up front and honest that this story fell really flat for me. I guess my expectations were just too high and I could not wait to get into the story, but it was not able to hold my attention nor was the story line anything to brag about. I was expecting more action and more witchcraft and maybe even more witches. It was the same story line that you see with most historical fiction along the lines of, main character is a witch she is trying to hide from witch hunt...more

I loved this book. I’ll admit, I haven’t read anything with a foundation of Tudor history before but the synopsis hooked me in. I like that the story of such a historical figure as Queen Elizabeth to be is interwoven with the history of witchcraft and this made it a real page turner for me.

It’s fast paced and action packed with small events spiraling out of control quickly. References to how witches were executed in the past, and the heroine experiencing it first hand, left me unable to put the...more

The Kindle sample is a good omen of things to come if a young adult in your life likes Elizabethan tales (my hand goes up) and stories about witchcraft (my hand goes up again). So, as I'm pushing 60 it looks like this is an interesting crossover read both for the ages it will interest and the genres it fits into. It only came out yesterday. More when I've read the rest.

Witchstruck is an interesting mash up between historical and paranormal fiction. I thought that looking at witchcraft during the times when witches faced death would be interesting, and Witchstruck largely delivered well.

The narrative follows Meg Lytton, a young witch who serves as a maid to Princess Elizabeth during the reign of Mary I, Queen of England. Elizabeth is held captive at Woodstock Manor and lives with the daily fear that she will be found guilty of treason; at the same tim...more

Wonderful book! A young adult novel with sparkly wit, Victoria Lamb creates a story you wish you could dive into and immerse yourself in the world of Witchstruck. Complex and loveable characters set in a Tudor past in which Elizabeth I is scared for her life and using Meg Lytton's natural power at witchcraft and the occult to save her life and put her on in her rightful place on the throne of England. The story is fast paced and exhilarating with constant dashes of humour and an atmospheric sett...more

An amazing and absorbing new series with a believable heroine and a real sense of danger, the publishers are marketing this as Phillipa Gregory crossed with Twilight. Yes it is set in the Tudor era and there are real historical characters included the future Queen Elizabeth and the reigning Queen Mary but this is not Twilight, It is so much better. There is a growing friendship and sexual tension between the lead characters but the paranormal power is all hers and she will not compromise. Meg is...more

My first thought when I’d heard about this book back when Victoria first followed me on Twitter was: Oh god I need this book in my life! I love the Tudor history period, and I love Witchy things. Combine the two and you have a book that is more or less designed for my personal enjoyment. Seconded? Then you perhaps don’t need to read any more before going straight off to your chosen book store to purchase.

Witchstruck follows the first person narrative of a young witch called Meg Lytton as she goe...more

I like this book mostly. It is a beginning of a series and I am not sure I will read the rest. I usually love witchcraft and other fantastical magics, but in this book the craft is different. Initially I liked the differences, but then they began to be boring and lacking in creativity. This is because basically the author equates witch's powers with the powers that saints have had to do miracles. I love when good witches exist and they convince people that they are good, but this was just boring...more

Meg’s journey opens in the ruins of the old palace at Woodstock. A full moon ritual is taking place, led by her Aunt Jane and attended by Elizabeth. A prediction is made and also a warning given.

We find out a little bit about Meg’s background and her leaving her home at Lytton Park to serve Elizabeth.

Alejandro comes onto the scene at a rather inopportune moment for Meg creating a false first impression. His master has been sent to administer religious instruction to Elizabeth in her forced seclu...more

At first I was a little concerned because my expectations for the story were a bit different than what it actually was. It turned out that I enjoyed this book anyways and what the author wrote made more sense than what was going on in my head before reading it through.

First of all, this was much more a romance than anything else and although it focused on Meg coming into her powers the fact that she served under Lady Elizabeth seemed a bit downplayed at times. There were only a few times that sh...more

Check out my interview with author Victoria Lamb and win a copy of Witchstruck here

If you’re a historical purist, than Witchstruck may not be the book for you. Lamb has woven together historical figures and events with fictional characters and the supernatural. It’s an unusual combination but one that I really, really enjoyed.

Set in 1554, Witchstruck introduces the story of Meg, servant to the closely guarded Elizabeth, and a practicing witch. It’s not long before a desperate Elizabeth turns to...more

"Twilight meets The Other Boleyn Girl in this first unputdownable story in a bewitching new series."

"Smoldering sexual tension, a darkly supernatural undercurrent and all the danger, plotting and passion of Tudor history"

I always love it when authors combine supernatural with history. They change the events in their favor, but don't change history. One of my favorite historical figures is Queen Elizabeth I, so I was...more

A historical setting, the spice of witchcraft and a touch of romance make for a thrilling read for teens and above.

This novel uses some aspects of Tudor history and plays 'what if ' with others (as you might expect fiction to do*). Set in the period when Mary was on the throne and the future Elizabeth I imprisoned, the atmosphere of religious intolerance and the threat of treason is ripe for a paranormal adventure with plenty of danger provided by the witchfinders and their control through fear....more

On hearing the summary of this novel it immediately had me desperate for a copy.
I have always truly loved the Tudors-dating back to my school days I really enjoyed studying it.
So for a series to be based on that time I was in awe.

The imagery and description of 'Witchstruck' has you on the edge of your seat.
It made me feel like a Tudor girl, minus the corset.
It's also made me long for a beautiful dress, that would be so tight I'd hardly breathe.

In meeting Meg I instantly loved her.
She's lovea...more

Meg Lytton is a witch - a real one - which is a very dangerous secret to have for a young woman in Tudor England in 1554. She has been trained in her craft by her Aunt Jane, and she knows she never wants to give it up. Unfortunately, the cruel witch finder Marcus Dent has taken a liking to Meg and wants to marry her, and he must not discover her secret. For a time, Meg has avoided him, as she has been sent to serve Elizabeth, Henry VIII's daughter, who has been sent by her older sister, Queen Ma...more

This was an excellent book for this age group (and even those outside this age group).... Royalty, history and witch craft, it's quite exciting. The writing is quite fast paced and once I was about a third of the way through I couldn't put it down.

I find the story quite easy to believe (OK, maybe not the extreme supernatural stuff but I could over look that). I am certainly intrigued about what will happen next and looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed it, though it was a bit slow moving at first, it soon picked up pace and had an interesting storyline. I don't really think that it needs to be made into a series though. I liked the characters and the plot and it was well written and interesting.

This book was nice enough. It flowed rather well, and was not boring in the least. But the characters... well, they had no depth whatsoever. A shame, really, because this book could have been much more enjoyable with in-depth characters.

I just didn't enjoy this book...it was kind of flat for me and I felt a little uncormfortable reading it. Maybe it's because I'm simply not a history person; maybe it's because I didn't like Meg and the way she embraces witchery from the start. (okay duh she's a witch but I was rooting for Alejandro to influence her and change her ways!! Not the other way round. I should've known lol after all the title of said book is witchstruck, not prieststruck or religionstruck or something) I guess I didn'...more

Victoria Lamb grew up in the peaceful Isle of Man, benefiting from a vast library of books and a family of writers from which to take inspiration. She now lives with her own family in a three-hundred year old farmhouse on the fringes of Cornwall's Bodmin Moor, where she walks most days and writes in a study overlooking fields of moorland ponies.

She has a serious addiction to Twitter, and invites o...more
