An amusing piece, sort of Philip Marlowe meets Christmas.
Crag Banyon was your typical PI: ex-cop, trench coat, fedora, drinks too much, constantly broke because of few cases, a secretary with which he shared a love-hate relationship, a cop who wanted to see him put away.
Not exactly.
A new client shows up a few days before Christmas: an elf riding a stolen reindeer, Comet, sucking on a large candy cane, complaining that something bad was going on at the North Pole. At the local bar, with a vampire...more

James Mullaney has created a charming world in which fairies, vampires, Santa, the Easter Bunny, and even cannibals live not quite peacefully. Crag Banyon is a perfectly pessimistic PI who hates to work and the world in general. In this first novel, he is set up for the murder of one of Santa's elves and heads off to the North Pole to clear his name and save Christmas! This is a truly fun read.
I might be a bit biased for this book because I painted the cover, but I found the book to be a great light hearted romp in fantasy. In the tradition of the Eddy Bear mysteries and the Dirk Gently mysteries, Mullaney turns the detective novel on its ear. The lovable but gruff detective, Crag Banyon has been framed for the murder of one of Santa's little helpers, and it leads him on a journey through the seedier side of the North Pole.
