I am the perfect reader for this book though, I must admit. I loved the flowery, lavender-hued prose and the abundance of detail in this rather lighthearted, adventure tale.
That's not to say there wasn't a fair amount of conflict, but it was the good kind in which an awful, naughty villainess-type character slowly comes undone by a wily an ...more

This is a romance novel. The main character, Shanna, has to find a husband by her 21st birthday, or her father will pick one for her. She ends up marrying and convict on death row. She plans to gain his name by marriage, and then lie to her dad by telling him that her husband died in a carriage accident. In exchange, she offered the prisoner one night with her.

This was my first by the queen of the modern historical romance novel, Kathleen Woodiwiss, and it won't be my last. I highly recommend this one. I must be the last to discover this wonderful writer, but I'm glad I did.

It is the first novel I read written by Kathleen Woodiwiss, and, boy, am I not glad that this is the case! I loved this book completely and from every aspect. The novel is cleverly poetic, heartbreakingly romantic, pleasantly mysterious, rightly sophisticated, and beautifully embellished.
It is written for events taking place during the mid 18th century, and so the writing is older English style. ...more

"I would have followed you," Ruark assured with a flash of white teeth. "You have my heart and my baby. You would not have escaped.”
His voice broke, and he sobbed, hiding his face behind an arm flung across it. Shanna's throat tightened, and there was no ease for the ache in her breat. With tears of her own gathering in her eyes she tried to hush him. He heard none of her pleas, but lifted his hands and held them before his eyes, turning them, staring at them as if he had never seen them before.
"But still - I love her. I could take my freedom and fly - but she holds me bound to her." His hands became limp fists which slowly crumpled to his sides as he groaned listlessly. "I cannot stay. I cannot leave." His eyes closed, and swiftly the moment was gone.
Choking on a sob, Shanna bowed her head in abject misery.”
